The family that plays together...

Advice

I have finally got my wife interested in playing. She has a basic idea of how the game works and has played 4th Ed a couple times, and one RP heavy PF session. I am going to run her through a few single player scenarios to get her chops up.

What she wants is an elf who can do everything... She wants to fight, rage, and cast spells. I think I have sold her on an anger domain inquisitor. Putting together a build that is easy to manage and effective for a single player game is the challenge.

Any help would be appreciated.

Liberty's Edge

Dunno what Anger is, but should work. I'd also recommend Magus, or straight up multiclass.

Perhaps look at the Rage Prophet prestige class in APG. That sounds like what she wants to do with her character.

Sovereign Court

I'd be wary of trying to do everything at once on her first playthrough. See if you can get her to do one scenario with a barbarian, one with a sorcerer, and one with the inquisitor - that should ease up the difficulty curve.

I had considered a rage prophet, but I wanted some more skills thrown in to round out the experience.

She played a magus in that RP heavy game and that is how she knows she likes Gishes... But again not the greatest single player character, and I wanted to keep it a bit simpler.

She played a cleric in 4th edition, but she let a couple characters die because she was rage smashing the enemy... It really suited her too... Very funny, irl I tease her about being a halfling or dwarf barbarian.

Actually, you should consider Bard.

This IS a character that can do some of everything - fight, offensive casting, healing, and stealth.

Speaking from experience (getting my wife to play took time, but now she is one of our party's rules lawyers) I highly recommend you keep things simple if she doesn't spend time reading through books. Don't go PrC or too out of the norm with archetypes or uncommon races, and keep the rules pretty minimum. Bard would be good, cleric as well. Inform her that 'technically' every one can do everything, but its kind of like going to college and not getting a degree in anything, just taking a bunch of classes. It might be cool, but it's not going to help you succeed at life.

At least, if I had to do it over, that's what I would do. Maybe our wives are completely different though, but I can't imagine that women who marry us nerdy types and show even remote interest in our nerdy activities are THAT different.

Dark Archive

I'm running my GF through a solo campaign of Serpent's Skull. She choose druid with animal companion. So far so good. I started her out at level 2, 25 point buy, and a bonus feat. A few sessions in and she's doing fine.

I assume you already thought of using an MCA to solve the "do everything" issue and decided against it because she's a new player.

Yes, I've looked into MCAs, but I don't want to spoiler her. I am getting her ready for a PFS game and I don't want her to be too far begin the learning curve.

It was a toss up between bard and inquisitor and she chose inquisitor and wanted an elf.

Does she want you to make her character?

what level you want it built to?

Yes, at lvl 2 25 point buy, easy mechanics.

Maybe straight sword and board, or 2hw with javelins for range and QuickDraw as the first lvl feat?

I get the impression you are moving too fast and making this a task for her rather than an enjoyable hobby to share with her significant other

It's been four years in the making... Now that we are retired, we have the time.

How about an Inquisitor with Rage Domain?

- Lots of skills
- Good combat ability
- Great saves
- Cool at-will abilities (and cantrips!)
- Good at social encounters
- Spontaneus spells (easier to use, but you might want to help her with spell selection)
- Since this is a solo scenario, I recommend the Preacher archetype, so she can take daily rerolls instead of Teamwork feats.

Elves may not be the most optimized choices for the class, but they can do it just fine. Especially if she chooses to focus on archery/switch-hitting.

Very nice! Just what I was looking for. Now all I need to do is stat her up and watch her destroy!

Also, since she will be able to rage, her weapon having furious on it might be a good idea. Not sure on the ruling if band and furious stack. If not, then it might not be worth it when she gets the bane ability. Otherwise, Courageous put on the weapon will help out. Lots of morale bonuses applied.
