And out of curiosity how would your player react in meeting a young Iosif Vissarionovič Džugašvil?

In a sense of irony... I'd hit him in the back of the head, with an axe.

And this is why I really don't want my PF game to get to close to the real world.
I don't want my fantasy characters dealing with real life. I don't want to get into dealing with the evils of Tsarist Russia that set up the conditions for the Communist Revolution.

Why, communism was the best thing that ever happened to Russians, just go and ask a few senior citizens in Moscow. :)

As long as you recognize that almost everything in this thread, including the latest round of kitchen sink famous-name-tossing, is purely speculative. So far the indication from Paizo hasn't been that PCs are going to be swooping in to rewrite world history as you describe above, or, you know, assassinate a young Hitler on the Western Front so WWII never happens.

Not at all saying Communism was a good thing. Just that if you look at conditions before the revolution, you can see why they thought it might be worth a try.
And then to throw fantastically powerful, probably good-aligned PCs, from a generally happy peasant setting into a real world impoverished misery setting is too much for me.

Agreed. I don't actually expect much of what I'm worried about to happen. I think contact with Earth will be much more minimal.
I'm just throwing another viewpoint out against the "Oooh, we're going to Earth. I hope we meet X" line.

You party pooper.....I enjoy kitchen sink famous name tossing speculation..
It would be so cool for the players to be at Beersheba, Le Hammel, or Mont St Quentin.

Yes my mind leapt at a couple of scenarios of dropping the PCs into the trenches during the Battle of Passchendaele or Ypres to kill a certain Austrian who joined the German army and was promoted to Corporal.

Wouldn't stop World War II. Might cut the Nazis out of it, but the Germans were mighty ticked off about the end of World War I / the Treaty of Versailles... if you really want to stop WW II you'd have to find someway to get Wilson to develop a spine and say "no" to the French at Versailles.
Back on track, the best way to handle contact with Earth... give the PCs just a hint, enough to get them excited and then cut the contact :)
Besides, if Rasputin were some evil high priest of "X" (which certainly would be a fun way to go with it), Lenin and the Bolsheviks might have been the better choice... Stalin as a lesser of two evils. That should scare you.

On the other hand...possibly being able to get Freddie Mercury, Bruce Lee, Mata Hari, Nikola Tesla, Teddy Roosevelt, and Annie Oakley into one's party with the right combination of Hut keys and timey wimey-ness has its charm...
...
Good God I want to play that game now.

But maybe then you would have to go to the Italian front to kill another Corporal, Benito Mussolini, as he was the inspiration of some of Hitler ideas. Messing with history is hard.

Using the PC powers to get a Socialist revolution instead of Communism. That would be interesting. But it would be a very different game (something like GURPS Infinite Worlds).

Your characters will have to be named Bill and Ted for this to work. Maybe throw Rufus in there..

Truthfully, I doubt people are going to Earth and it's more like Earth (by that I mean Rasputin) is coming to Golarion ala Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.
I was thinking that could be a possibility. But then I saw Tank, machine gun, gas cylinder, gas mask, and Matryoshka Doll in the item list.
So it's either Rasputin comes to the golarion system packing a serious amount of heat (and dolls), or we're going to WWI.
Or something else Paizo has cooked up in the dark and mysterious corridors of Paizo HQ.

I think you're right. Though someone suggested Rasputin's personal demi-plane where you could find all that stuff with his guards.
If the AP does actually go to Earth the possibilities range from appearing at or in Rasputin's stronghold and just having to battle him and guards there to appearing elsewhere and having to travel across Russia and have free rein to interact with whoever you want in Moscow or elsewhere. That would give the most opportunity to drop in famous historical figures and events, but would also require the most effort, since you'd need both a lot of background information and rules for a lot of modern things.

I'd tell him to follow his f+%+ing orders during the Battle of Warsaw!

I was getting more of a The Doctor feel from that. But maybe that was just because of the Timey Wimey.

This AP is looking to have so much concentrated awesome that I squeed when the dots started to connect.
You hear that Paizo? You made a 6'3'', 250 lb. man squee.
Dammit Paizo, you made me do it again!
Seriously, though, I love the direction this is going. This is going to be SO AWESOME.

I have to say, I love the aesthetics of the Great War in my fantasy and science fiction. Actually getting ready to run a Space: 1913 game soon, so count me very interested in this.

Space 1913 sounds very interesting... What system are you using is it home brew?

Savage Worlds with the Space: 1889 supplement, but I'm advancing that world past the Victorian age setting. So, I can slide in some 1910s pulp in there along with the spirit of the 10's.

If you get a chance read some of the Biggles stories set in WWI. They are abut old fashioned and Boys Own Adventure but they are worth it.

Will do. Already adding the atmosphere of the end of imperialism and the general upheaval that occurred during that time period. Also adding in the importance of several of the inventions and how they'd shape space in 1913, like radio and the automobile and tanks.

Please don't bring back the Spanish flu please don't bring back the Spanish flu...
This all goes back to my theory that fantasy is what happens after the death of the generation that lives it... it's 100 years ago, so it's fair game.
(Incidentally, this is also why Grandma's name isn't popular to give kids, but Great Grandma's name sounds awesome...)

I'm withholding judgement. I like the Rasputin angle and it ties in well with Baba Yaga. I'm more wary about coming to Earth, especially at that time, but as long as the PCs stay isolated and are pushed from getting involved in WWI or the Russian Civil War directly, I think it'll be alright.
I'm not interested in turning either of those into epic romanticized fantasy, or in trying to turn PF into the meatgrinder of early 20th century mechanized war.
