How to creep out the neighborhood:

  • Leave your car alone all summer, under the diseased camphor tree that drips sticky black soot all over the car, making it look like something out of a post-apocalyptic movie
  • Wait for a few days of solid rain
  • Go out in the heavy rainfall and wash your car

  • I have no idea why they think it's so odd. The days-long soak helps loosen up the crap, and washing it in the rain means I don't have to waste water rinsing it.

One of those things where I don't understand why everyone doesn't do it my way...

I always prefer to head into winter with a nice layer of filth on the car, gives the salt something to eat away other than my car. :-)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Salt? But you're nowhere NEAR the ocean! :-P

    Spoiler:
JK -- We spent 2-4 weeks in the Sierras every winter growing up, so we got VERY accustomed to sand and salt all over the road. But it is fun talking to native Californians who have never seen snow, and who wonder why the heck they paid all that extra money for the "undercoating" on their car...

Oh, and thanks for reminding me -- I think it's time to go mess up your "Captain Yesterdays Only" thread again.

I take my duties VERY seriously...

I once had the joy of telling a Seattle lifer what frost bite was like. :-)

His face went white when I described my uncle taking his boot off after his snowmobile broke down on the way back from the bar and he had to walk four miles drunk, through the snow.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

You've got to TRY to get frostbite in my part of the world. But the rivers around here . . . . Couldn't tell you how many drunks have met their ends in the Hatchie. I'm not a swimmer, so the river never really appealed to me; if I moved somewhere where winter was real, I'd probably be the first idiot to drown self and snowmobile in some lake or another. While stone-cold sober, likely. A clear, level area covered in snow would remind me of all the fields here, and it'd never occur to me to question, till I was ass-deep in muddy bottom.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I like winter, owning a snowmobile would only ruin that.

It's bloody hot out here. Darn near November and I'm sweating. Hate it.

My wife has a good job, our house is worth less than what we owe on it due to market fluctuations, and her our families are here. I'd Skype, personally, and risk it, but she's all..."family matters".

Plus, moving isn't cheap, and I'm not exactly guaranteed to find work wherever I go.

Don'tcha just hate how details deflate hyperbole???? It's a rough, rough life -- but, at least I don't live in Florida. lol

Took the kidlet to a Halloween event last night. He finally got to wear his costume. :)
    Bow ties are cool!

And then this afternoon we carved pumpkins. Badly, and over a very long period of time. Pumpkin carving is not our talent. Heck, half the time was spent getting the kidlet to stop complaining about how slimy the pumpkin guts were. :P

    Bushyasta (div)

Funny thing is, that I wrote majority of it first and then found there are certain similarities to an actual div* that spreads sloth: Bushyasta. I changed the name to match it from the initial Freptar (another mythological div that distracts people for which I found no other information) and turned its color from smoky to historical yellow and green, but the long spindly arms were there first. The spider-monkey look, multiple eyes, and mandibles were my own idea.

*Avestian devas/daevas are evil entities, div being their name in Modern Persian, and are the basis for Pathfinder divs. D&D/Pathfinder good devas are based on Indian devas.

5 foot seven last we checked. He's probably grown since then. That seems to keep happening. Probably a side effect of the vast amounts of food he consumes. :P

I used to think people were exaggerating how much a teenage boy can eat...and now I know better. :)

As I don't watch Dr. Who (shocking, I know), I saw the Fez and jacket and immediately thought Stan of Gravity Falls!

I should have recognized the color scheme not matching... XD

    Great costume, though!

    +1 the great costume.

Hmmm... If he had a cardboard little car painted blue and decoed like the TARDIS, he could complete the trifecta as 11th Doctor + Grunkle Stan + Shriner.

One year for Halloween I'm going to shave a pencil-thin moustache, get some aviator sunglasses and a hoodie, and borrow a friend's van as my costume.

So, I've been watching Roswell recently. Elements seem... familiar, somehow, to iZombie. It's certainly not the same show by any means. But I think iZombie, as a show, seems like a combination of perhaps Roswell, Bones, and a couple of other shows.

    Interesting.

    NobodysHome, Lawful Stupid Good Samaritan.

I've got a bit of a cold today. I'd call it "mild", but it was bad enough to make me take the day off work, my lungs are a bit burn-y, I get tired really easily, and it's hard to focus.

But... the kids declared this morning that they wanted pumpkins, so I dutifully started walking over to the corner store to get some. At which point I ran into our wonderful gardening neighbor. He's had two strokes and can barely walk, but he sits in his garden all day and does amazing things. He was complaining about the tiny green waste bins in Kensington, and I'd previously pointed out that I'd be happy to let him use our ginmormous bin, which we never more than half-fill.

So of course he chose today to ask for the favor. And I'm not about to say, "No," the very first time he asks, so cue sick NobodysHome carrying a 32-gallon trash can full of green waste a block back to his house, dumping it, bringing the empty can back, then proceeding to the corner store that is sold out of pumpkins.

Being a Good Samaritan -- it'll kill ya, kids!

They grow almost as much as cows out here.
