Indiscriminate aerial bombardment, daisy cutters, or a nuke is unnecessarily wasteful and harmful. Far better to accomplish the same goal with just a few sniper rifles.

Edit: Wow. Nope, not going to delete it. Revel in your imaginings of a nekkid George C. Scott.

My mom passed away early this morning.

I'll post something nice about her later.

Right now I have to deal with my brothers who all process their grief by calling me independently of each other every twenty minutes to see if I heard from the same brother that told me. :-/

It's extremely pat by this point, but sincere as I can: peace to you, and even joy. I know your family had its strain, and I know how difficult this has to be for you and the rest of them.

I love you, brother, and hope you and your family - both wife and children, and brothers and father alike - can find comfort during this time.

You are in our prayers.

Yeah, that's rough. I remember having to tell the kids when my father died. He took them to the park every single week. Not the best of fathers, but a fantastic grandfather.

Good luck, and feeling for you here in the deplorably-sunny west!

So, weird question: Does anyone else see any figurative meaning in the square root of infinity? Or know of any occult-y meaning that has been applied to it?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Other than it being recursive due to the unique properties of infinity, which is pretty cool I guess, not really.

As a mathematician (almost wrote "methematician, which is a different calling altogether), it's not particularly interesting.

As a layperson, I have heard it used to mean, "That which is unfathomable."

But I know of nothing "occult" about it. Just, "This is something that is too hard to understand."

And now here we are, contemplating turning loops into chunks of squares, or somesuch. All that's recursive now are my nightmares. shivers

Hm, that meaning makes sense within the tv context that I saw it in.

Sooooo sorry! We have lost far too many dear friends over the years, and I always find it harder to say Goodbye to the furry ones.

With humans, they know what's going on, and by the time the end is nigh they at least understand what's happening.

Our furry friends just don't understand.

I don't know whether there's such a service in your area, but in our area there are vets that will come to your house to perform the service. I cannot tell you how grateful we are that our last three cats were able to pass away at home, on their favorite blanket/towel/piece of furniture, surrounded by their families.

I strongly suggest looking into it. It's well worth the price.

Forgive an old man for rambling, but I feel pretty strongly on the subject of bullying, so the fact that Impus Minor is taking on the subject head-on in a beautifully assertive and "correct" manner just makes papa proud. And I just learned I may be around for a while. Woo hoo!

A long story about a local bullying issue:

As I've mentioned, I was bullied as a kid. And it wasn't just one bully, or one school year, it was an ongoing series of kids calling me names, chasing me, dumping sodas on my head, throwing chalk, spitballs, or rocks at me, threatening to beat me up but never following through, etc., etc., etc. The first couple of times I reported the incidents to the school administrators, they'd have a meeting with my parents, the other kids' parents, and the other kid, and the other kid would deny everything I said, the other kid's parents would say, "Oh, our little angel would never do anything like that! Your kid must be a lying little sociopath," and the administration would believe them so nothing ever happened nor changed. It was... unpleasant. And all my friends who were also getting bullied told the same tale: The bullys' parents refused to believe their kids were capable of any such cruelty, and the school administration was unwilling to take any action without physical evidence. Even then, if two kids were caught fighting, they'd suspend both kids because it was obviously both of their faults that there was a fight. The idea that one kid might have started it and followed through no matter what the other kid tried was beyond their comprehension.

So that at least sets the stage for my experiences as a kid.

As a parent, I have been ecstatic at the change in attitude I've seen from parents and teachers. Parents are willing to believe their kids do bad stuff. Teachers and administrators are willing to believe what the kids are telling them. Impus Major, in spite of his miniscule size, has never reported bullying, even before he became a Force of Personality. I've had the great fortune to chaperone many trips with his class over the years (4th grade overnight trip to a nature camp, 8th grade to Great America, 9th grade to Disneyland), and they're just an amazing, amazing class. But sometimes you get classes like that. My class (Class of '85) was notable in that it still holds the all-time record for most felonies committed by a class before graduating in Albany High history. On the other hand, the Class of '87 was such a group of saints they embarrassed us all. Impus Minor's class isn't in the same league as Impus Major's, but they're still a great group of kids, and Impus Minor has reported a few bullying incidents over the years, but the teachers always listened to us, acted immediately, and Impus Minor reported a cessation in such behavior quite quickly.

So now we get to the core of the story, where we end up right back where I started.

On Friday, Impus Minor came racing home, totally out of breath, to let me know that a girl in his class was cutting herself, and confided in him that she was contemplating suicide. I called the Suicide Hotline for help, and was rather bemused at just how useless they were:
- I went into, "Press 1 if you are planning on using a knife" keypad Hell. You think that's going to STOP people from wanting to kill themselves?
- Once I got a human being, she couldn't give me any advice whatsoever. Her only job was to comfort suicidal people. You'd think they'd have a list of resources or something, but no, it was pretty much, "Can't help you! Good luck saving the girl! Gotta get back to more important people! Buh-bye!"

Fortunately, I have the number of the school counselor, got through to her, explained the situation, and she started intervention immediately.

So the girl's feeling better, but confided in Impus Minor yesterday that there are two boys at school who are following her around, teasing her, bullying her, and encouraging her to kill herself.

That, in and of itself, staggers me. I never inherited the "cruelty" gene. In fact, I care TOO much about what other people think. But the idea that two 12-year-old boys could possibly consider it fun to encourage a girl to kill herself? Just beyond my imagining, and very depressing.

Impus Minor stepped up beautifully, of course. I mentioned that I'd like to beat the two kids senseless, and he asked why I didn't. I explained that adults pummeling children is frowned upon in this country, and I'd go to jail. So he offered to beat them up for me. I asked, "Do you think you'd win in a fight?"
"I think so."
"Are you ready to get beat up if you lose?"
"Oh, I know! I'll take Impus Major with me!"

Ah, the Nuclear Option. Impus Major. 60 inches and 109 pounds of raw muscle, bone, and unyielding unmitigating stubbornness. He is a scary, scary fighter.

I both laughed out loud and shuddered at the notion.

So I told Impus Minor, "I'll tell you what we'll do. I'll report this to the counselor. I'll report this to the principal. We'll do this the proper way, and let the adults take care of it. If they fail to do anything about it, and the boys keep doing it, then you and Impus Major can have at, OK?"
Impus Minor pondered for a moment. "I think that's the right thing to do, Dad. I like it. Let's tell the principal first."

In another satisfying moment, I called the principal over lunch to inform her of this development and she responded, "Oh, not only do we know about this, we are all over it." She sounded a bit pissed off about the whole thing.

Good.

I never want to see another adult ever dismiss bullying as, "Boys will be boys". Nice to see my son's principal isn't one of those people

End random ramble.

OK. C'mon, Tac! I KNOW you didn't read that story in the last couple of minutes after I posted it!

I think the rules (maybe for everyone EXCEPT you) is that you've got to at least READ the posts first! :-P

That is an awful situation being handled as well as it can by the non-horrible people.

That such evil is so readily available inside people always staggers and surprises me.

I'm thankful that she is getting the help she needs!

Actually, I did! I mean, I read it a couple of times after that, just to be sure my comprehension was solid, but it really isn't as hard as it seems...

(That said, I do sometimes favorite things without reading. It usually happens when I'm carpet-favoriting a thread and get into the read/click groove so deeply that it becomes click/read instead. If I find something questionable or whatnot, I'll usually retract it right away. This was not one of those times.)
