The theme of your summoner and eidolon

So with the diversity in possible designs and themes for the summoner and the eidolon don, I was wondering how people themed your character and his "pet"? What kinds of magical traditions do they represent? Is your eidolon a manifestation of the astral? A conjured genie? A piece of your character's inner psyche? A demon your character made a pact with? Something better left unspoken?

Who is your summoner like? A hermetic recluse who associates with few people or things beyond what she summons? A demonlogist? A monster trainer? A precocious young mage who brings his imagination to life?

And what does your team do? How do they relate to and work with each other? How do they relate to and work with the rest of the party?

One word: Chimichanga. He looks like this. He is from the abyssal plane of Tako-Bel. He drools caustic slime. He doesn't talk much.

Geir is his summoner. He's almost crazy, almost murderous, and almost nice at different times depending on his mood. CN. He enjoys stitching BBEG's faces into his coat.

Then I have Lorenzo Von Matterhorn, Chelaxian noble, and his trusty sidekick Horace Esquire III. He renames the eidolon everytime it dies, so next time its name will be Horace Esquire IV. His eidolon is smarter than he is.

its my imaginary friend that other people started seeing one day

I'm playing a dwarven priest//summoner in a Kingmaker game. He is a member of a homebrew religious cult (the Church of the Celestial Apparatus, which believes that Mount Celestia is actually only a shell built around a deific difference engine that is the real power in Heaven -- yes, a true deus ex machina). He's more than a little kooky, but he's both Lawful and Good.

His Eidolon is a fragment of the Celestial Apparatus, which appears as a construct. He's only 2nd level at the moment, so it's an imperfect avatar of the Apparatus, and is mostly composed of dull silvery metal and opaque crystals. As Thedas (the Summoner) goes up in levels, the Eidolon will become a more perfect realization of the Celestial Apparatus, growing larger, with more limbs, better defenses, and so on, and the metals on its carapace will grow brighter and more reflective, while the crystals will be clearer and more colorful.

I intend to leave it entirely open-ended whether there really is a Celestial Apparatus and whether the Eidolon really is an avatar of such a being, or whether Thedas is just a crazy old cult leader with a magically manifested delusion of grandeur following him around.

Stealthy demon panther that is the emissary between a vague, unnamed evil power and my summoner and has been order to protect him at all costs.

Regular sized and everything, just looks like a strange panther of some sort (with reddish eyes). Well, up until she enters combat; then she starts ripping things to shreds, moving unnaturally fast and spewing flame all over the place. That, plus my guy is a Malconvoker (it's a gestalt game) always seems to make everyone react so ... violently when he's around. It's not like he's always surrounded by brimstone and hellfire and demons and devils. Just most of the time.

Baby Tarrasque.

The summoner I designed for an upcoming campaign is the last survivor of a clan of diviners and seers. The clan was world famous for their knolwedge of whats beyond the veil. Using that information, they entered into a pact with a race of spirits to be their guardians.

So my summoner is a fortune teller that uses his tarrow cards as a focus for his summons. Each card depicts a creature he can summon, so when he summons a creature, he pulls the corresponding card from his deck and pronouces the fate of the opponet as he summons the card. It looks like the card art comes to life.

His Eidolon is one of those spirits, called a seishin koken'nin.(japanese for spirit guardian, thought that was a nice touch) It looks like a 4 armed humanoid with huge black eyes and a body made of fog.

I have a summoner that rides upon a giant salamanderthat looks like this.

One of my friends has an eidolon that resembles a mutant 6-eyed wolf. His baby sister perished in a terrible accident and, like the Elric brothers, tried using magic and mysticism to bring her back. It went horribly wrong. Ever since that day, the strange canine monster that came out of the forbidden ritual has claimed to be his sister, forever trapped in a monstrous form.

I have been creating a very tribal "shamanic" summoner, who's tribe worships a Naga "spirit" entity.

They believe that when a shaman dies, his soul is merged with this god, and is reborn as a "child" of this naga, which must then bond with a young mortal shaman to manifest in the material world.

The summoner basically takes on the role of nanny for this young naga, and the two of them both grow in knowledge and wisdom side by side.

Scarab Sages

A monastic priest of the Tao. He. Has tattoos all over his body which come to life with his summons. His edilon is the spirit of his ascended mentor.

A pokemon. =3

More seriously, in an upcoming Legacy of Fire game I'm going to be playing in, one of my fellow players is making a sha'ir themed summoner whose eidolon is a small genie.

I also think making one your Stand (as in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure) would be cool.

I still remember the one player who made a child summoner-- the post is somewhere on these boards-- and made their Eidolon a Teddy Bear right out of a Horror Movie. The method of summoning was priceless as well.

A pokémon you say?

Not impossible, I've got my miniature all painted up and based for this possibility actually. One old sandslash mini and enough levels to have a large eidolon and then it'll be on the table.

Large, Claws, Burrow speed, natural armour and I'm good to go. Maybe some spell-like abilities too.

Pokemon make really awesome base creatures for these kinds of creatures, especially the older ones, even just for a shape.

(Yeah, bad picture but still.)

Sounds like League of Legends Annie. Look it up. She's a little pyromaniac whose teddy bear can transform into a giant, flaming bear.

And heeere's Annie.

Mine was a Kobold Summoner. His Eidolon was an aspect of Bahamut (Father of all dragons) that took the form of a green dragon.

Was difficult going into towns at times. LOL

I also worked up a Drow summoner who's Eidolon was a giant (Medium) sized spider. Never got use it though.

I think I also stat'd out Calvin and Hobbes.

Wyrd Miniatures has a mini that would be perfect for that.

Malifaux Teddy

A concept I've been toying with using is a guy who refused to believe that his wife is dead and unconsciously crafted his Eidolon to look just like her.

That just made me think of a summoner who believed that he was already damned, and the entity that comes when called is just a representative of the horror that has claimed him that delights in the knowledge that it is saving him from his enemies, just so when the time comes, it can take him for itself. The summoner is always a wreck, can't sleep without persistent nightmares, thinking he feels eyes watching him in the dark, and as the summoner levels up the "Representative" grows to match, indicative of the summoner's time running out.

Hmm.. Needs Intimidate, and a way to render foes shaken, or feared.. Maybe something subtly off about it: A joint bending just a little bit too far, or a smile just a tooth too wide, something off about its eyes.. It would probably drive the party Paladin up the wall.

Not sure that kind of guy would have a party that kept him around long, though. If he dies (since he's convinced he will), I'd have the Eidolon appear one last time, just to disappear with his body.

Well, in all honesty, if I ever had the chance to be a player (I've been the GM for many years, I do so enjoy telling a good story) and if my (hypothetical) GM would allow the APG, I've already decided that my summoner and eidolon would be based upon the relationship between a ki-rin and its shirei (anyone who has seen the anime/manga Twelve Kingdoms will instantly know who and what I'm referring to).

As it happens, however, one of the players in my new Kingmaker game is playing a summoner. And I did a little homage to that characterization during the game. (He knew what I was doing and loved it, but said he didn't want to "take" my idea. I told him no biggie, and that ultimately this is how I saw the summoner/eidolon relationship).

So, now that's how it's going to be. :)

(And it still how I'd portray my own summoner/eidolon pair).

The summoner I recently created has an eidolon that is a replica of his invisible (imaginary) childhood friend. Now that he's grown up and his imaginary friend has manifested he gets to look about smugly and say "See I told you he was real."

I would be lying if the first thing that didn't pop into my head was Persona.

Or Final Fantasy X or JoJo Bizzare's Adventures Stands.

Dragon and rider, mostly. Now I must go and create a Pokemon Eidalon...

A friend of mine is modeling his concept off a a little sister style summoner with a big daddy for the Eidolon.

Oh god. Terrible thought:

"Crush them NOW Giant Robo!"

Guardian Angel Eidalon

How about a wierd and exotic plant? The summoner's name would, of course, be Seymour Krelborn.

Liberty's Edge

Hanna Blackruby a halfling Summoner for an upcoming Council of Thieves campaign, wolf eidolon named Rex. Goes around town in disguise causing trouble as "Devilboy and Rex". (yes she is a girl, it's called a disguise for a reason)

Dammit, here I thought I was going to be the only one to try that!

DAMMIT there goes my second idea.

I created, as a major challenge for my game, the following :

12th level Summoner (Harpy)
Eidelon : Huge Bird (Roc) with Frost elemental abilities. The Roc was a giant bird with blue and white feathers, and frost dripping from it's talons and beak. The harpy routinely cast enlarge on herself before battle and rode the Roc into battle. She had a +3 Lance of Frost.

She would also cast Greater Invisibility on both herself and the Roc. So, QOshea's first notice that she was around was when her ice-lance impacted with his green dragon eidelon's side. The sneak attack, combined with the roc's bite and two talons, popped is eidelon on the second round of combat.

She was very effective, but area effect spells beat her off.

Thank you so much for the reminder that I still owe you for that. LOL

Silver Crusade

For our Kingmaker game I have a halfling summoner from Numeria whose rage is so total it manfests itself into MOJO. His barbarian clan has been fighting the robots for so long that rage becomes it's own entity for certain tribes.

I just had an idea for my own summoner, inspired by Planescape (old AD&D 2e setting). For those unfamiliar with that setting, the Fraternity of Order was an organization dedicated to the understanding and mastery of the laws of the cosmos. And in doing so, they hope to learn its loopholes and how to exploit them. This character idea I had was one of their number who uses his knowledge of the ins and outs of how to the cosmos works to make it believe that the reality he wants to happen is the reality that exists. Kind of a sage with an dry, ironic sense of humor. The character’s eidolon is a moigno, a living incarnation of its master’s arcane formula and equations.

Silver Crusade

I'm currently using as an NPC a monk/summoner that's based off of Kamen Rider (specifically the recent Dragon Knight series that was shown on the CW). My PCs are for the most part in awe of his combat prowess and have yet to see his eidolon in action.
