Deadly Foes on the Loose!

Friday, November 4, 2016

We're just a few short weeks away from the November 23rd official release date for Deadly Foes, the newest release in our prepainted plastic Pathfinder Battles line from our partners at WizKids! As I write this, the Paizo warehouse elves (almost certainly drow) are unpacking minis to be sold as singles, prepping case subscriber orders, and overall getting our act together to release everything on time. Meanwhile, I've been sneaking in and stealing figures left and right. What value is there in absolute power if you don't allow it to absolutely corrupt you, at least a little bit?

I'm VERY pleased with how Deadly Foes turned out, and think it's one of our best sets yet. From great facial details to amazing "tampo" stamping of intricate designs (mostly pentagrams), Deadly Foes will soon prove to be just as popular outside the Paizo office as it is inside.

Because you never quite know how these sets are going to turn out until you see final production figures, earlier this afternoon I grabbed two handfuls of my favorite figures from Deadly Foes and ventured outside to take advantage of some rare November sunshine here in Seattle. This gave me the chance for some "candid" photos of the final production figures that I'd like to share with you today.

Here we have the mighty Barzillai Thrune (rare), arch-villain of the Hell's Rebels Adventure Path, leading a horrific ceremony to summon a devil from the depths of Hell. With him, from left to right, are the Fire Diabolist (rare), the Priest of Asmodeus (common), and the Thrune Enforcer (common). In the background we see examples of the set's ultra-rare dungeon dressing pieces, which come 1-2 per case. Here we have two candelabras, the Book of the Damned (which comes off its lectern), and the Hellgate.

Great success! All hail mighty Asmodeus as a Bearded Devil (uncommon) emerges from the Hellgate! What a joyous occasion for the forces of evil! But wait, what's that dark shadow in the flames of the gate? Is something else coming? Perhaps more than the diabolists bargained for?

Oh nooooo! It's an almighty Pit Devil (rare)! Even the evil servants of the diabolical House Thrune are on the run after the appearance of this unwelcome guest! Run awaaaaay!

Speaking of the Pit Devil, here he is standing next to the Fire Demon from Legends of Golarion, by way of a size comparison. Demon? Devil? YOU decide!

Here's a close look at some of the dungeon dressing in Deadly Foes. The Hellgate looks much better to my eyes in hand than on the digital image, since you can make out the writhing bodies of its frame much more easily. And take it from me, they're pretty disturbing. These pieces make for great décor in almost any frightful scene, and I'm eager to add them to my own campaigns.

Hobgoblins are a major creature type in Deadly Foes. Here are a few of them (from left to right): the Hobgoblin Archer, Hobgoblin Cleric, and Hobgoblin Alchemist, all of them commons.

We've been adding characters from the villainous nation of Cheliax to our Pathfinder Battles sets for years, and this set is no exception. Some day soon I'll array all of these figures for a class photo, but here are four from Deadly Foes: the Thrune Enforcer, Priest of Asmodeus, Fire Diabolist, and Barzillai Thrune!

And that's it for this week. Next week I'll show off more Deadly Foes figures "in the wild." Let me know if there are others from the set you'd like to take a closer look at, and I'll do my best to accommodate.

Until then, I remain...

Can't wait! ^_^

Id really like to see the shadow giant and the giant crab. I know those are wierd picks but they are the two I'm most excited for.

Lantern Lodge

Any chance of seeing the Clockwork Dragon out taking a stroll?

These minis all look great. I'm so looking forward to ripping into a case of them.

Scarab Sages

As per usual, it's a great looking set all around. I wish I could justify spending the money to buy a whole case.

Case has been on order for a while. Looking forward to it

As a long-time collector of PPM I have to say these look fantastic. The Pit Fiend is just awesome in every sense of the word, Hellgate looks great, but I think I might actually be most impressed with the Hobgoblins. As commons they look better than some of the rares and that's not to take anything away from the rares, they simply look THAT good.

Great pics, btw. If you feel inclined to take more I'd love to see some of the large uncommons.

Dark Archive

Great photo story, Erik!

I'd love to see another one involving rescueing someone from the cage, a celestial summoning or a Darklands battle scene with Shensen & the Angelkin Paladin teaming up against Cloakers and Cave Fishers.

One minor sour note on the set. I was expecting the cage to open, but somehow (probably for stability, I dunno), the cage doesn't open. So it's still a cool set piece, but you can't trap Small and Medium creatures in it like I intended, which is a bummer.

Fair warning!

No worries, nothing I can't fix with a hobby knife!

I suspect if I just cut off the bottom it can be placed over smaller models like a lot of gelatinous cube minis. Will need to be a really clean cut though.

Mr. Mona, are there any of the convention pieces still floating around? If so will they be in the on-line store before the holidays? I always like to pick up a few as stocking stuffers and such for fellow gamers.

Yeah, we should get any lingering promos online for sale. Thanks for the reminder!

No problem, that's not your fault.

Lorian is right, it can still be cut open if needed.
I think we need a large (2x2 squares) rectangular cage in a future set anyway.
Thank you for the heads-up anyway, Erik!

Any news about the sales/future of the boxed "Iconic Heroes" sets that you are privy of and can share with us?

If i havn't forgotten anything, we'll get a slew of unpainted and prepainted Wizkids minis in january from both the Pathfinder and D&D line.

** spoiler omitted **

Wow, that's a nice collection of useful terrain/dungeon dressing! Definitely going to pick the incentive up when it becomes available!

Dark Archive

I will be getting me one of those! Combined with the stuff we have and the upcoming throne room I'll be doing great!

Dark Archive

Yep, i´m also in the (adventurer´s) camp of people who buy both lines, even though i like the Pathfinder minis better (most of the time).

I really think they can co-exist and compliment each other, i´d only wish that Wizkids wouldn´t keep releasing them two months apart from each other, but that looks to be happening for the foreseeable future with MM2 out in february 2017 and Crown of Fangs in april 2017.

Still, "Throne Room" (two thrones, a banquet table, (three?) courtiers and much more) and Adventurer´s Camp (27 pieces including two creatures) should make for some really cool objects to place on the game tables.

2017 is gonna be a great year for minis collectors!

Silver Crusade Contributor

I wish I could afford both lines. Maybe this year will be the year.

And that does sound like a great incentive. ^_^

Dark Archive

I get full sets of pathfinder i.e. A case but only pick at the other line this time I think I bought a total of four boosters. I only wanted the big hill giant and a thri keen both of which I pulled early. But this case incentive is very tempting and and I'm sure I can find it without buying a case.

Great idea - let us know how that goes?

I'm really liking this set. I passed on both of the last 2 sets, but this one seems to have a good assortment of useful stuff. I particularly like all the celestials 'cuz if you summon creatures to fight for you, at some point you're going to summon some celestials. And previously there weren't many options for prepainted ones out there. (at least, options that aren't really hard to get or really expensive at this point)

Sovereign Court

Erik, our group is currently playing both Hell's Vengeance and Hell's Rebels simultaneously to simulate the 'events are playing out at the same time' feature of these APs. (i.e. we've done book one of Hell's Vengeance with evil PCs, with me as a GM; now we're doing book one of Hell's Rebels with good PCs, with me as a player this time... sharing the load is awesome! ;) )

Any chance Santa could put in my stocking some kind of 'Complete Collection of Hell's APs Minis' combo pack? :) :) :)

PS: our group has purchased both Hell's Rebels and Hell's Vengeance Pawns as well, the prepainted plastic stuff is just... wow!

I find this a stunning comment. I found RDI & DD were the most actually useful sets I've seen in this line. Usually, these sets are full of well done but pointless minis.

Dark Archive

Two weeks till US release and 5 or 6 weeks till european release!

I'm curious about the future of this line with president Trump not wanting american products to be produced outside of the USA anymore.

Luckily he is going to be sworn in in february, so we'll at least get the "adventurer's camp" from that "other line" before things may change.

There were some good minis in those sets, I'll admit. I've got TONS of the old DnD plastic minis, though, and there was a LOT of overlap between what I've got already and what was covered in those last 2 sets. There are a few I'll likely still pick up as solos, but the sets themselves just weren't compelling enough for me.

Not sure how feasible it is, but it would be great if they were available by the 23rd when the Deadly Foes singles become available

Dark Archive

10 days till release and maybe just enough time for one more preview.

I wonder how fast the singles will sell.

I guess the candelabra is the dressing piece to get a (gold) repaint?

Silver Crusade Contributor

Hey, Australian friends! I know there's a few of you here.

A friend of mine from there just posted this. I'll admit ignorance of the details or of whether it will help, but it looked like it might be relevant.

Hopefully this makes the Battles line a little more accessible to folks. ^_^

Follow-up: I'm being told that it isn't particularly helpful. Or even recent. My apologies. :(

Deadly Foes will ship between 30th of november and 14th of december from the Paizo warehouse.

It takes between 4 and 8 workdays to ship inside the USA, so it may reach some of you after x-mas.

Please organize the shipments to Canada first.
Thank you!

If i counted correctly, 26 out of the 50 Deadly Foes booster minis make an appearance in either the "Hell's Rebells" or "Hell's Vengeance" APs (plus chandeliers and cages for flavour).

So you could say that a case of this set is a "Hell's APs combo pack", if not a complete one. ;-)

Sovereign Court

Whoa! I wasn't aware that a full 50% of the boosters applied to those APs! neat!

Nevermind: we'll divide and conquer (roll diplomacy with players so that they buy their own boosters... :P )

Dark Archive

It looks like we won´t get another preview for Deadly Foes.

I guess that´s ok because we essentially have seen all minis over at the Wizkids homepage and they are already available online as singles at auggies since yesterday:

http://auggiesgamestore.crystalcommerce.com/products/search?q=Deadly+Foes

9 are already sold out though.

1.) The Rope Trick is still available.

2.) They will soon restock.

3.) Paizo will soon offer singles.

4.) Other sites still have some.

Keep looking and you'll get them!

Pst: They will send you an "available again" mail if you want. ;-)

That's a neat spell you cast. Let me make a Spellcraft check. Oooh, it's an illusion, and it's called helpful solution. Tricky. It has all the appearance of being helpful but if I succeed at a Will save, the dirty truth is revealed.

Here's what's going to happen. Auggies is going to open up another dozen cases, getting another dozen <whatevers>. Three customers will show up and order the (roughly) four that are a useful quantity of each. Auggies will be out of stock again by the time the fourth customer shows up.

Next, Paizo will do the same, and again, only the lucky early birds will get any.

So will the other sites.

I totally get that you're trying to be helpful, and I absolutely appreciate that, which is why my first paragraph is humorous. But the fundamental problem is that a bunch of molds that people want in bulk have a rarity that precludes most of us from getting them in bulk. It's a broken distribution rate, and it needs to be pointed out repeatedly, until it's fixed.

I do understand that there's a (significant and) vocal segment of the customer base who don't want to get four or five "chairs" or whatever instead of four or five monsters/NPCs. But you need four or five of those people to actually sell off their one-per-case dungeon dressing in order to support the people who do want them. And then you've got two layers of mark-up, on top of unpredictable availability.

It's frustrating mostly because it gives the appearance that these cases are being created as "collectables", not as RPG tools for those that want/need them. These are collectable baseball cards, and if you want the ones you want, you need to spend astronomical amounts (say, buying five cases), and you're going to get a phenomenal quantity of cards for some player nobody will ever care about. It's not how Paizo normally sells things, so it feels odd, even though I understand what's happening and why, and that Wizkids actually makes them. I even understand that rarity and complexity are related, but that suggests some of the dungeon dressing should absolutely be common rarity. So yeah. Frustrated.

Personally i don´t want more than one each of "Book of the Damned", "Hellgate", "Arcane Pillar" (there will be a "normal" pillar in the next set, and probably some more included with the "Throne Room" incentive) or "Rope Trick".

As the "Cage" won´t open (without cutting it open or so), one of that will be enough for me too.

The "Candelabra" is another story, but there will probably be two of them in a case and i guess the repaint available at Paizo will be a gold version.

But i still get what you are saying and i would love to get my hands on a dozend "bed" miniatures (as i only had one in my case).

I think (and hope) the "Throne Room" case incentive will include lots of chairs, columns, long tables that can be put together and stuff but i would also like some blisters or boxes of dressing pieces sold seperately (same as the "Mage Knight Artifacts Set 1 or 2").

I don´t know why Wizkids doesn´t make these anymore, they have been sold out for years and fetch crazy prices, as do the "Mage Knight Castle" sets, which are the most gorgeous pieces of painted plastic scenery ever created imo.

Dark Archive

The Cage, Candelabra and Crab minis seem to be the most wanted minis, as they are sold out.

All other 49 minis are still available for very fair prices.

I believe I need to say this again as people are still talking about the side pieces so much. There are some very easy to use molds that you can buy that will satisfy these needs.

http://www.hirstarts.com/

Check this site out for some of these. You can just use plaster and you can make chairs, beds, whatever... depending on the mold.

These items just don't seem that financially viable for Paizo to make a profit on.

As incredulous as it may sound to some of you, I have no interest in making plaster or resin dressing and then painting it. It simply won't happen if that is my only alternative. So, I'm the type of person that creates demand for PPM dungeon dressing. The alternate view of "why would you waste space in my set for stuff I don't need or can easily obtain by making it myself" is the reason we don't have more dressing pieces per set. I think Paizo and Wizkids are doing a balancing act here and the sparse offerings are the comprimise that both sides can tolerate. I'm not going to whine about it, I'm going to be thankful we get any dressings and if I really want multiples of something I'll do the diligence to chase them down. And thankyou Paizo for repaints such as the burning brazier, that helps make this task easier.

I can hardly muster the time or will to paint miniatures, let alone make them. ^_^
