Pathfinder Battles Preview: Heroes, Not Monsters

Friday, September 16, 2011

All 40 miniatures for December's Pathfinder Battles: Heroes & Monsters are currently in production, and we can't wait to see how the digital renders and practical sculpts (more on those next week) will make the transition to the final product. We've seen the actual production miniatures from the very first nonrandom set, Beginner Box Heroes, and the miniatures actually improved with every step of production, starting with the digital sculpts and moving through the paint master stage to the final production figures.

We've already shown off some of the nastiest critters in Heroes & Monsters, so this week we thought we'd reveal some of the heroes in the set.

Below you'll find digital renders of the Half-Orc Barbarian and Seelah, Iconic Paladin. Remember that the colors on the final miniatures will look a bit darker and more "realistic" than those shown on the digital images below, but the contours of the figures and the general color scheme will give you an excellent idea of how the final miniatures will look.

Next week, we'll take a look at some of the figures in the set that were sculpted practically (rather than digitally), and reveal a little bit about the process of how these miniatures are made.

If you like what you see, head over and preorder your Heroes & Monsters minis today, or take advantage of our brand-new Pathfinder Battles Ongoing Subscription to give yourself the best chance to complete your Heroes & Monsters set before they run out!

Wow, Seelah looks amazing. I am still amazed they can actually make the "Actual" Minis look that good.

Preordered my case. I'm very much looking forward to the behiend the scenes production blogs, as well as the production item photos when available.

Great job so far Paizo and Wizkids.

Aren't half-orcs green?

That half-orc barb looks flat out awesomesauce. I have a couple of players who will definitely want that as their personal mini. So far this miniatures line looks like one of the best prepainted plastic sets I've ever seen on the market. Way to go Paizo/Wizkids.

Mostly. This guy is sort of a drab green.

Curse my eyes!

The first time I read this, I thought you said, "This guy is sort of a drag queen."

Personally, I prefer my Orcs gray, but I recognize that this decision is beyond my control. (I still heart Paizo anyway).

Scarab Sages

Are there any plans to create a game around the miniatures as well?

The name of the line seems to suggest it :)

Thanks Erik! Another great preview. It is appreciated. This is indeed turning out to be one fine set. Both digital sculpts look really good.

Wednesdays used to be one of my favorite days (new comic books), but now it looks like Fridays might be my favorite day (Pathfinder Battles: Heroes & Monsters previews). Yay!

Question... is Seelah the only iconic in Heroes & Battles, or might there be one or two others? (I'm not looking for who those might be, I'm just wondering if there are other iconics in the set. :)

(I'm probably not going to get a straight answer on this one, am I)?

For some reason, the first thought that popped into my head when I saw the Half-Orc was "Guy Smiley"...

Liberty's Edge

They are both excellent, but there's something about the leg length proportion of the half orc that looks a little off. His knee should be a smidge higher up, IMO. OTT awesome!

They look great!!!

Lookin forward to the next preview and can't wait to see the production part of it.

I work in plastics and the most interesting aspect is watching a part being made and most times being assembled with other parts to create an assembly that is used by every day consumers.

Those Plastic injection molding machines sometimes make parts so fast, its like their breathing.

I believe I saw something from either Erik or Vic saying there will be another iconic in this set.

- I'd guess it won't be Seoni, as they'll keep her over for Rise of the Runelords,
- I suspect they won't do any of the UC iconics because they're not classic fantasy,
- we've pretty much got confirmation from elsewhere of the smalls in this set, so no Lem, Lini or the Summoner
Which leaves 9 possibilities: Amri, Sijan, Harsk, Alain, Damiel, Alhazarha, Freija, Imrijka or sett el (I know the spelling there is terrible...)

Man, oh man. I just cannot wait. The more shots you guys release the more unbearable the wait becomes.

December can't come fast enough! I'm hoping we get a few other iconics in this set. Also hoping I actually get at least one of them in my case, but knowing my luck that's not extremely likely. Then again, with there being 40 minis in the set, I'd say I stand a decent chance.

Finally the players in my group have awesome minis they can use for their characters so they don't borrow my professionally painted miniatures. They never grab the painted minis BY THE BASE!!!..... Hehehehe

Your not playing chess people!!!!

Thank god for tax returns or I don't know how the hell i'd explain to my wife how i am paying for the Case of PATHFINDER minis I bought. :)

@ E_B - thanks for that. Out of your 9 possibles ... heck any of them would be cool. Maybe Amiri or Harsk? If they (Wizkids) did encounter packs based (even loosely) on some of the RPG book covers... it would be pretty awesome to have the witch (plus her fox familiar) and the alchemist minis vs. a tarn linnorm encounter pack, and then the oracle and the magus vs. a "legion" of skeletons - encounter pack. (Let's face it, half the skeletons on that cover are "toasted" anyway... so about 6-8 skeletons plus 2 iconics... sign me up. :D

These look amazing - it's just the postage to Europe these days, I cannae take it! Maybe my local GS will buy a case (fingers crossed)

Well, it's not too bad, not when you get 15% off the list price (and 75% off the premium's price).

I asked about the minis at a local store. They would have me pay 75€ for a brick and 15€ for the premium. That would have been 315 for the case. It's less than that (in dollars) when I buy from Paizo. I think that even with any duties that might/will arise, I'll come out ahead.

I'm also curious if we'll be seeing a game centered around the miniatures as well.
Not that I'm not looking forward to using them specifically with my tabletop games, but it'd be cool if we could count on a new miniatures war game.

I like the sculpts a lot but is her arm in the shield correctly

I was wondering what looked off on the mini. Thanks for pointing it out.

Souphin wrote:

I really don't like the shield arm. I fight SCA, and nothing puts sword and shield in perspective like a LONG PENSIC BRIDGE BATTLE. Seelah must have an 18 str for sure and at least a 16 con for her stamina checks.

Not to mention how often the angle will wind up breaking her arm. Good job lay on hands.

I also LARP (Laire here in NJ), and many people strap their shield like the sculpt shows. It is utterly ineffective as a shield. They are practically hunched over, or their lower body is completely exposed. Its like using a HEAVY buckler with a long Y axis.

I cannot wait - just pre-ordered today:

Beginner's Box

Heroes Miniatures Set

Case of Battles Miniatures

Black Dragon

Heck of a lot of shipping costs, since, so far, none are being listed as shipped together. But, that's ok - my excitement could care less.

That's because they're all preorders, and preorders don't necessarily arrive at once.

You should talk to customer service about it, whether this will change (at least in some cases) to bigger shipments, or maybe what to do to get a bigger shipment out of at least some of the things.

Yeah, now that you guys mention it, the shield thing is weird.

Oh boy, did I read that wrong the first time I saw your post and it jumped out at me because of the caps.

I've said two things on the topic:

•We'd like to see all of our iconics in prepainted plastic form at some point, and so we'll be sprinkling one or two into each release.
•I *believe* that, among the Heroes & Monsters and Rise of the Runelords sets, we'll be releasing three more iconics.
