Announcing Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker!

Monday, April 16, 2018

Now that we're done with previews of Jungle of Despair—which releases next week—I'm excited to announce the next Pathfinder Battles miniatures set from our partners at WizKids.

Currently scheduled for an October release, Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker, is the fifteenth set of prepainted plastic miniatures in the popular Pathfinder Battles line. Featuring 44 randomized figures in sizes ranging from Small to Large, and six pieces of dungeon dressing, Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker exemplifies the commitment to quality sculpts and paint jobs, as well as variety and utility of figures, the line is known for.

As always, customers who order a case of Pathfinder Battles: Kingmaker boosters will also have the opportunity to purchase the set's case incentive. This set's two-figure incentive features the earth and water elemental lords, completing the Huge elemental series we began last year in Maze of Death with the air and fire elemental lords.

No Kingmaker set would be complete without some of the iconic allies and villains from the Kingmaker Adventure Path, such as the troll leader and Nyrissa, a Large uncommon and Medium rare figure, respectively.

There are also a number of more generic tropes of the genre we're releasing for the first time, like the bat swarm, werewolf, and oni mage. These figures fill in some of the gaps from the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary, which many fans have requested we represent as thoroughly as possible in prepainted plastic. The bat swarm and werewolf are both Medium figures, at the common and uncommon rarities, respectively, while the oni mage is a Large uncommon figure.

With the pending release of Pathfinder Kingmaker, the first isometric, party-based computer RPG set in the Pathfinder fantasy universe (now in Beta for Kickstarter backers!), we also had the unique opportunity to provide miniatures of the many new characters being introduced in the game by the game's developers at Owlcat Games. These companions will join the player along their journey to conquer and rule the Stolen Lands, and can now join players in their tabletop games as well. Check out Regongar, half-orc magus, the first of these companions we're showing off. A Medium rare figure, Regongar also makes a great PC or enemy NPC with the lightning spell effect giving him unmatched gravitas on the battle mat.

We're still a few months away from showing off the entire set, but keep coming back weekly for more Pathfinder (and Starfinder) miniature previews. Next week, we'll take a look at some of the figures in next wave of Deep Cuts unpainted plastic miniatures from WizKids. Until then, keep rolling 20s!

The half-orc magus looks fantastic. I'm looking forward to putting that guy into play.

The highly anticipated huge elementals do not dissapoint. The Earth Earth Elemental Lord is incredible! The bat swarm looks great, too. I think I’m going into miniature overload. So many great minis...

And is it me, or do I see some poor souls trapped swirling around in the Water Elemental Lord?

I imagine the bottoms of their feet are also swirling, so yes. <Grin>

But seriously, I'm impressed that the water elemental also appears to be female.

So far, so cool.

I'm glad to see what looks to be a curved rod for attaching the bat swarm.

I wouldn't have thought it would matter without seeing them, but the flying figures Wizkids have been producing with that style of mount as opposed to the straight pole, really look great. It kind of gives an impression of movement.

Some nice looking minis here. The elementals look great and appear to match the size of the fire and air we already have, so a nice unified feel to the elementals. Pity we couldn’t have gor these as a part of a huge set, im sure wizkids will do just such a set for the icons line in the near future.

Nyrissa looks great and is a perfect nymph miniature. Truly hope the detail and colouring come through in the final mini, wizkids seem to manage this weel for the pfb line.

The troll leader is nicely detailed and appears slightly smaller than previous offerings, more in line with the lower CR creature that trolls represent, yet still apppears very oversized. I don’t think trolls should really tower over other giants and I think this one is still that little bit too large and bulky.

Love that bat swarm and 100% agree with Steve above, the curved transparent stand is much more effective.

The ogre mage is extremely cool looking but once again I myself questioning scale. He’s going to looks very small for what whould be an imposing figure, the one in Kingmaker was certainly an imposing opponent and feels like a large figure. He looks about the same scale as the cyclopes weve recieved. I think this personally is the correct scale, it is after all closer to the actual sizes in the bestiary, makes the size of most of the giants we have sit well with their CR, but I can see some critisicm directed at the perceived small scale given the enormous, imposing figures we get for most trolls (ice trolls excepted)

So much goodness. Makes me sad that we just finished the troll encounter in my current campaign.

Would the swarm not work better on a large base?

The breasts on the water elemental seem out of place.

I agree. While it has been refreshing to get both genders in many of the humanoid and giant races, I’ve never considered eleentals as male or female.

The elemental lords in AD&D were gendered. I suspect it’s a throwback to that (which is good enough reason for me, personally).

I agree a run-of-the-mill elemental shouldn’t be male or female.

Yeah, that elemental sculpt is... something. >_>

As for the set... I'm ambivalent about Kingmaker, but I've never had a complaint about a Battles set theme before, and I don't really have one here. Hooray for more minis. ^_^

But.. but... I'm sooo poor. And I've been waiting for a Kingmaker battles set for so long :)

nice stuff, but not so keen about the mammalian look on the water elemental.

preferring the medium base on the swarm, this way it fits in the middle of four medium characters.

I hope we don’t get any remakes of LoG, the AP specific sculpts where pretty good.

I have a bold prediction...

Kingmaker will be the first remade AP for PF 2E.

The booster shows a small Spriggan & the "Stag Lord" to be in the set.
Maybe a large Spriggan will also be in it.

Book 1 has the Stag Lord on the cover, book 2 has the Troll Leader, book 6 Nyrissa. We already have King Irovetti from the cover of book 5.
That makes the "Cyclops Lich" from book 3's cover a possibility.

Here are the creatures featured in book 1 which are possible:

-Fairy Dragon (B3)
-Grig (B2)
-Frog, Giant (Bestiary)
-Boar (Bestiary)
-Kangaroo (B3) medium
-Elk (B3) medium

Speaking of satyrs, a mini for the Horned Hunter would be great. (He's from this AP, right?)

I believe he's been spotted on the side of the booster packs already. Even if not, he'd be a shoe-in for a rare slot.

Does this possibly mean we could see a remastering of Kingmaker and a reprint?

The fact that the world didn't end this morning also means we could see a remastering of Kingmaker and a reprint.

Odds are very, very slim.

All the PF1 hardcover books have been announced. Further, there's got to be something better for Paizo to do that reprint PF1 material right after PF2 is released.

It would also be a poor seller, relatively speaking. There'd be plenty of people who already played the AP and didn't see a point in rebuying it even it were updated to PF2.

Then there's people like me who haven't played Kingmaker yet, but wouldn't buy a PF2 version. I already own a perfectly good PF1 version of it, and own PF1, so if I want to play that campaign, I don't need to buy another hardcover worth. Why spend $50 or more just to play the same story we already have with different rules, especially since as existing PF1 players, we don't hate the system?

Just saying... as excited as some people might get at the idea, there will be more people excited by (a.k.a. willing to part money for) Some Other Adventure Path.

What a great way to start the previews of a new set! There are some great looking minis there! I'm always happy to see new orc and half-orc options, and the magus certainly does not disappoint. Really looking forward to seeing the rest of the minis in this set!

These minis have now been added to the gallery:

I for one have been asking for a small and large spriggan combination for a very long time so this possibility has me very excited indeed. Mind you it would be a missed opportunity if they had the small one and no large one.

Aaaarrrggh!!! We just finished our last session of Kingmaker last week. Where was this set a year ago!!! Well, I guess I'll have to run it again in the future at some point.

I love the bat swarm and am happy to see the elemental set completed. I started Kingmaker with my kids group but they wanted to go a different direction pretty quickly and developed their own character goals so I am just pulling parts of KM into their campaign instead. Gotta love that about kids - best plans of mice and all....

With Kingmaker game coming out, and a whole set of figures for Kingmaker in the making, is there any chance of the Adventure Path getting sanctioned for Society play?

Awesome!

I think this bat swarm does look a little better than the Monster Menagerie Swarm of Bats. However, the MM version has a thin layer of bats which allows for placing other minis on its large base, so it works better mechanically.

That’s always been a problem with swarms, if they aren’t relatively flat, they can’t get under or around minis. And that is their very nature. Medium based swarms are nice since their shape can be represented more fluidly, but with flying swarms, there isn’t a good way for them to occupy the same square as their victim.

This is great news for everyone running 8-year-old adventure paths the world over. Very timely, folks.

Unlessssss..... this is a hint to a hardcover version-updated megamodule release to kick off PF2.

Or.... maybe it's just to drum up more interest for the CRPG coming out.

My guess is that its cross marketing to coincide with the release of the CRPG, which incidentally has a couple of Miniatures included if you pre-order or jumped in at the right level of the Kickstarter.

I'm super excited about the Jabberwock miniature personally. Jumped onto the Kickstarter just for that. When I saw that Kingmaker was the next Pathfinder Battles set I thought the Jabberwock might actually be included which fills me with somewhat mixed feelings consider I don't really need two.

As someone who wasn’t part of the Kickstarter campaign, I can only hope they include a Jabberwock! I’ve wanted one of these for quite some time. But, as he weighs in at huge, and we already know the case incentives for this set, I’m guessing we won’t be seeing him in Kingmaker. :(

I wasn't aware there were Pathfinder Battles minis offered as part of the Kickstarter. I'll lose a great deal of faith in Paizo if I can't complete my collection of Battles minis because I didn't back a Kickstarter for a video game. :(

It's not clear to me that the miniatures on the kickstarter are PFBattles figures (the size of the Jabberwock miniature is listed as 120mm, which seems like it's measuring height or something rather than the traditional medium/large/huge categorisation).

The Jabberwock mini is perched on a rather large rock and doesn’t appear to have a round base underneath. There’s a small picture of it way at the bottom of the Kickstarter in the Add-Ons section. Oh, and it’s listed for $50.

You are correct, it really wasn't clear if the two miniatures that were being offered are actually PFBattles miniatures. For reference the second miniature that was available as part of the Kickstarter was a Medium sized hero miniature that was advertised as being a companion from the game just like Regongar was presented in this article. This miniature is listed as 30mm in size and does come on a round base like the rest of the PFBattles miniatures. Based on that I would guess that the Jabberwock is most likely Huge sized or at the least an oversized large miniature.

Also, the image of the Jabberwock miniature is definitely the same image from the Bestiary, can't tell if its just that illustration or if its an actual render, but I was personally expecting that this may not be the final representation.

The minis that Owlcat is making for the Kickstarter are not Pathfinder Battles.

I am very pleased that the next D&D set (#9) will be out in july & Kingmaker in october, as one month between the last sets (MM III & Jungle of Despair) was just to close to collect both.

I wish the DnD ones had a subscription like the PF ones do; I buy boxes of those here and there, but I only actually collect the PF ones because of the subscription bonuses.

Can anyone who's knowledgable comment on why the case incentives for the "Kingmaker" set are being split into two seperate boxes for $34.99 each?

Thank you. :-)

By the way, D&D Icons of the Realms set 9 ("Waterdeep: Dragon Heist") will now release in september 2018 (same day as the hardcover adventure) - one month before Pathfinder Battles 15 "Kingmaker".

It is true. For a variety of reasons, WizKids had to split them into independent products at a slightly higher per-figure price. The alternative was to offer only one figure as part of the Kingmaker set and push the other to a future set, but we didn't want to split the four Huge elementals over more than two sets, so this is the option we went with.
