Steel Wolves - A Mercenary Campaign (Inactive)

Game Master Mark Sweetman

The Steel Wolves are a squad of the mercenary company the Blood Hawks. Currently stationed in Kalabuto, though the jungle calls....

Y'know, I actually think we're on to something here in terms of dividing the squad into smaller specialized groups that Blaze can easily designate.

Sentis actually has Stealth. It might be worth lumping him and Baran in with Dark and Grusk as an official scout group for the squad. Team Green.

The Blaze Kaavel and Doc can be the assault squad, what with all the fire and light and loud noises (and eventually giant robot armor). Team Red.

Minor Crab-beast

One other question Kaavel - do you want to stay size Medium, or move up to size Large with your golem suit?

Male Half-Elf Martial Artist /4

By the end I would like to go Large with it. I was thinking the armor would go through stages of development. If not how you thought of it going medium would be fine.

Minor Crab-beast

My current thinking is thus:

1. Making you wait until you can offord a full blown iron golem suit will take a long long time - and be no fun for anyone.

2. Forcing you to take a prestige class or change class to get the golem features I feel is a bit inelegant, so I'm not keen on it.

3. Therefore a gradual approach will be best - to allow you to get started sooner, as well as phase in the benefits over time.

4. Whatever we do, I'm comfortable with looking at what monk features might still work in the new form. For example, flurry wouldn't necessarily break anything and seems to fit - though fast movement doesn't really work in my head. The AC bonus would be offset by increased durability anyway.

So what that boils down to is coming up with an approach that allows you to gradually add bits of the golem suit over time. An arm here, a fist there, and get the increased features of the suit gradually. Possibly at the hands of a slightly maniacal gnomish experimenter who is using you as a guinea pig...

How would that sound?

Male Half-Elf Martial Artist /4

That is a bit more than I expected to get. Figured I would lose all three. The rest of that seems fine with me I was thinking gradual. Though how would we work it so the golem fits together with the other pieces? I am okay with a slightly maniacal gnomish experimenter using Kaavel as a guinea pig as long as he knows that he might get kicked if he does not let Kaavel uses his hands anymore.

Minor Crab-beast

One of the first 'bits' I could see you getting is the initial exoskeleton - basically a worn harness that doesn't provide any protection, but gives a structure to hang the bits of golem off of as they get added. Having that act as a set of muleback cords gets around a lot of the weight problem. (Effective Strength 26 gives you a light load of 306lb :)

The offset that I'm thinking will be that the golem suit uses up some of your magic item slots. So when you get your harness fitted that takes up your armour slot - then the hands would take up the bracer slot, etc.

Male Half-Elf Martial Artist /4

So my magic items would be the golem suit? I figure I am going to lose out on boots, bracers, armor, and head gear if what you are saying correct?

Minor Crab-beast

Something along those lines was my first thoughts. Still open to debate and suggestions though.

Male Half-Elf Martial Artist /4

The golem pieces will come with enchantments or bonus? I figured they will just asking which of the two. Other than that seems fine to me.

Minor Crab-beast

The bits will have various effects and enchantments as you get them, which will potentially be upgradeable over time.

So when your hands get replaced by golem fists - your unarmed damage will initally change to the golem slam damage of 2d10. Then later on you could potentially look at enhancing that, etc.

I still need to mull over the details, but for your next level (which will be when you get back to Kalabuto) it will likley just be the harness portion... then at level 5 you'll start getting some of the tastier elements.

Male Half-Elf Martial Artist /4

Sweet, upgrades are always nice. Seems fine with me so far. Oh yeah would the golem slam count as unarmed attack or a weapon attack since I am using metal hands.

Minor Crab-beast

Unarmed of course - I wouldn't gimp ya :P

Male Half-Elf Martial Artist /4

Sweet. I have to re-do my feat plans now. Most of my monks from now on will be martial artists/brawler fighter they go well together.

HP AC , CMD , Fort +, Ref +, Will +, Bombs , Init +

Doc could build it for you!

This is exactly the sort of mad science he's in to. It's not something he'd ever use himself, but if he had a test subject to "try out his prototype"

Heck, Kaavel is already Doc's lab assistant, this could just continue on that theme. :)

Male Half-Elf Martial Artist /4

Hmm could work, though I think us finding it than Doc figuring out how to make it better would fit unless the book tells Doc how to make it.

HP AC , CMD , Fort +, Ref +, Will +, Bombs , Init +

Finding a framework and improving on it works for me. This sounds fun. :)

Minor Crab-beast

Indeed it's a possibility, but I'd still see use for an 'entry point' for the initial supply of the system.

Delve a little further into the absurd and base it off a 'golem' subscription to a church of Brigh, The Whisper in Bronze. For only 399 gp plus postage the inventors will send you a monthly magazine complete with your very own golem bit.... we're still working out the details, but they don't call me Freddy Three Fingers for nothing ;)

Male Keleshite Magus(Kensai Archetype)/5

Faiths of Eberron has Construct Grafts that could be used as a base for what your looking to do.

Yes, I have Knowledge(Crazy Obscure RPG Lore) maxed out with a +30 Insight Bonus lol

Male Half-Elf Martial Artist /4

While I wait for DM Voiceless to give his take on what he is going to do with the golem suit. What does everyone think about the Pathfinder MMO?

HP AC , CMD , Fort +, Ref +, Will +, Bombs , Init +

I'll reserve any judgement until I get a chance to try it. All I know about it so far is that it turns the boards into a rather annoying place.

Seriously, it's like the edition wars all over again.

I noticed that as well. I read somethings that makes me not want to play it but that is my choice and I do not post threads about it which so many others have been doing.

I'm very interested and highly curious. If they are able to pull off all they say want to, it could be an awesome game and then some.

Regarding edition wars and what have you, it's like I've said in regards to epic rules:

I want them, and I understand some people don't. But I hate how people who don't want them feel the need to create threads about how Paizo shouldn't create the rules, or goes on threads for the rules and tries to highjack them with their crying.

I never go on threads about stuff I don't like and slander the products or ideas therein.

umm...Game wise...I want something cool now too. Kaavel get's golem armor, Blaze wants somethin awesome as well, lol

Male Half-Elf Martial Artist /4

Hey, Kaavel just hits things all the suit will do is better his ability to hit things. You can cast spells and buff yourself and generally epic. On a side note though I vote Blaze gets a talking sword.

Minor Crab-beast

Disbursment of 'cool' stuff is to those who ask and put together an idea of what they'd like.... if Blaze wants something specific, he need only state that request and your happy neighbourhood eyeball would be happy to consider it.

On the MMORPG - I'll check it out in maybe 6-12 months when there is actually some degree of cohesiveness about what they are intending to do. I'm not averse to the idea, but I think I've moved past my MMORPG days potentially...

Kaavel - on the golem suit, consider it locked into the plans - it's just going to take some in game time before it starts getting rolled out. You'll get your first bit when you get back to Kalabuto.

Male Keleshite Magus(Kensai Archetype)/5

A talking sword would be cool, but I want something tied more to his character. I could have easily taken the Bladebound archetype, but I felt it came off as just a little too evil for Blaze.

What I'm thinking about is something that goes along with him being a holy warrior of Sarenrae, but clearly not divine. Easy answers would be the Celestial or Half-Celestial(or parts there of) templates, but while both of those are cool, I would like to come up with something different and unique.

Minor Crab-beast

Blaze - if you have the second Jade Regent AP, check out page 24 - the sidebar on the helm.

Would something like that (suitably reflavoured for Sarenrae) be up your alley?

There is a cool helm in there? *wishes he had the cash to find out about this helm*

Minor Crab-beast

Don't read below if you want to maintain the mystique of the second part of the Jade Regent AP.

Spoileriffic:
The Ulfen Helm
Among the funeral treasures of Snorri Stone-Eye is a magnificent winged full helm. It is obviously quite valuable, and while the helm radiates both a faint aura of divination magic and a moderate good aura, it is not a magic item and cannot be identified as such. In fact, the helm was
not one of Snorri’s treasures at all—it is actually a cassisian angel named Helgarval.

A servant of Desna, Helgarval was summoned to the Material Plane to serve as a familiar but was stranded when its master died. Since that time, the angel has tried to do good deeds in order to gain the notice of its betters and return to its home plane of Elysium. Most recently, Helgarval stumbled upon the doings of the oni of the Five Storms in the Kalsgard area and has spent years quietly observing the oni and their agents and gathering as much information as it could. Learning of Snorri Stone-Eye’s connections with the Rimerunners Guild (and thus with the Frozen Shadows), Helgarval secretly stowed away on the funeral ship, only to find itself trapped belowdecks.

Unless recognized as a living creature (such as with a DC 12 Knowledge [planes] check, but only if a PC asks to make the check), Helgarval does not yet reveal its presence, but any nonevil individual wearing the helm receives the benefits of the angel’s lesser protective aura. The angel wishes to gauge the PCs’ intentions before it makes its presence known to them, but can be a valuable ally when it finally chooses to do so.

Male Keleshite Magus(Kensai Archetype)/5

hmm, yea, definitely. Though I hope I would eventually gain more than the just the protective aura as we level. Also, not sure a Helm is something I see Blaze wearing, but a pendant or something would be more fitting, I think.

Cool idea on the iunstone heart, Voice.

HP AC , CMD , Fort +, Ref +, Will +, Bombs , Init +

Hehe, awesome. It always amuses the hell out of me when everyone react super fast and Doc goes at the bottom of the initiative. Seems fitting somehow. I would totally take initiative penalties if I could trade it for something cool. Sad there's not a working Flaws system.

"Heh? What? Oh! Bad guys! Right, 'old on..." BOOM

Minor Crab-beast

I do know of one item that penalizes initiative:
Flawed Dark Blue Rhomboid Ioun Stone (Seeker of Secrets): +2 to Perception and -1 to Initiative

Slightly more amusing here given that you were one of two so far that were quick reacting enough to dodge the deadfall ;)

I attribute that more to the fact that his hands are only about a foot from the ground at any give point.

I'm going to have to withdraw as a player from this game. Life is simply getting too hectic, and I need to focus my energy for pbps a little bit more than I currently am able to.

Male Pale Master

Disappointing but understandable. Hope it all works out for you and settles down a bit.

Sad face. Hopefully we can keep you around handling things back at Company HQ and if you eventually have time you can rejoin us.

male Half orc Shapeshifter Skirmisher 5

It wasn't an easy decision, but I simply can't keep up the pace this game deserves right now.

Minor Crab-beast

Darkbiter - would be sad to see you go as well, though understand completely if things have gotten a bit full on for you.

How about this - I'll DMPC you till we take our extended holiday break on the 14th of December. Then when I get back on the 10th of Jan, you have an option to rejoin us if you think things have calmed down enough for you?

male Half orc Shapeshifter Skirmisher 5

That'll work.

M half-orc Rogue 4 (acrobat) / Ranger 1 (falconer)

Or come back with a new character...

My vote is for

"Dark penetrator"

Minor Crab-beast

Before Doc asks - yes the acid sacs are salvageable, but only from two of the ankheg. The third (last to die) sac is empty as it was spent in combat.

You can collect some chitin as well if you like.

Male Keleshite Magus(Kensai Archetype)/5

So Voice, I was thinkin about what else my special item we talked bout could do, and I have an idea I wanna run by you: Inner Sea Magic has the Shadowcaster archetype for Wizards and the first ability allows them to prepare one extra spell per day in their shadow.

My idea would be an inverse of this: if I prepare my spells durning the dawn, I get one extra spell per day as well as known, but stored in that familar type item and only accessable during the day and while in natural sunlight. Meaning when we were in the mine, I couldn't cast them, but in the pit we're currently in, I could since the sky and therefore sun is visible. Cloud cover wouldn't matter as that's a little too harsh, I think.

The spells known can come from any list, but must have Light or Fire descriptor. Maybe one or two others.

Thoughts?

It's like you're a mind reader. ;)

I've just had what could be a most awesome idea:

Convert a wagon into a rolling alchemy lab, complete with drop down sides to expand the lab space as well as allowing open air while brewing some of the more nasty and toxic concotions.

What say you Voice and Doc?? Sure it would cost money and may not be fully realizable till a good deal later, but this could be a team effort to make it happen.

Male Half-Elf Martial Artist /4

A moving alchemy lab for Doc seems like it could go bad really fast or go awesome really quick.
*pictures the wagon getting fire breathed by a dragon and blowing up.*
than
*pictures wagon being used to blow up Bad guy*

Minor Crab-beast

Moving alchemy lab doesn't need any DM fiat to make work. It's basically just a matter of buying a cart and an alchemy set. In monetary terms it's quite cheap and already within your grasp to make happen if you wish.

Blaze - re: the idea, sounds doable. You won't have a chance to encounter anything in anger until we come back from the break in Jan, but I'll keep it in mind.

HP AC , CMD , Fort +, Ref +, Will +, Bombs , Init +

It's something I've thought about. I think it's a good idea as long as we can make it protected and not prone to things like breathweapons.

Right now I just don't have the funds to really mass produce alchemical items in quantities that would require an entire cart. Give me another level or two and I'll have us a portable weapon manufacturing plant.

Years ago I had a character who used a portable hole as a traveling workshop. It was a blast. Eventually I'd like to do that with Doc.

Minor Crab-beast

Hmmm - you now have a wagon and a ready supply of three chitinous creatures that have acid resistant hides.... one wonders if some of the solutions to your problems are near at hand...

Pimp out the wagon with a ankheg hide cover? - it's green and stylish ;)

Male Half-Elf Martial Artist /4

*Calls Xzibit who shows up*
Yo dawg I heard you need to fix your ride, Well I came to pimp your ride.
*Xzibit takes wagon*

2 days later

Yo son look we put in some dragon hides to block out those breath attacks. We also reinforced the wagon with adamantine so it does not break. To top it all off we added a crystal ball so you can get the latest news.

Okay on a serious note DM Voiceless I would like to ask your help since you like to do things different. Answer if you can help instead of me putting it and you cannot help I will wait.

Heck yeah. Doc is getting a pimpwagon.

In previous editions of the game (including the Bladur's Gate video game if memory serves) on could make some seriously cool plate armor out of ankheg. It was lightweight (like mithril) and acid resistant.

I'd love to be able to make Ankheg Breastplate.
