How did we get so spread apart?!
Atol sees Finneas go down but cannot do anything about it - he's just too far away. Instead he casts Holy Smite, Will DC 19 from the cover of the pillar and runs toward the middle of the fight. He centers the smite on Finneas hoping to take out some of his opposition as he closes to heal him (with luck - sigh).
Holy Smite: 5d8 ⇒ (1, 5, 8, 8, 1) = 23 and blind if they fail their save and are evil.

Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |

Round 3, Init 26
Dyrant (who flew to O11 last round) grunts as the fierce fighting happens below.
He quickly debates trying to save Atol or Finn or Dr. Toffitt...as they all seem to be in danger.
*facepalm*
All of them are in danger. Atol is in the least...but, boy!, look at him chug along away from that giant!
Dyrant suppresses a smile.
Finn looks like he'll survive another hit.
Dyrant cinches up his loinbelt and flies to Y5 and calls upon his AngelRelic for another fireball, this time avoiding Toffitt, but getting his remaining foes (placed to avoid AM19).

Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |

Dyrant punishes the half-orc again with his AngelRelic cudgel resulting in a satisfying spray of brains and brain puss.
"Take that heretic!" Dyrant rages as the half-orc falls, taking a few moments to catch is breath before checking on Finn's status.
"Are you okay, Finn? I took him out for you," Dyrant says, wiping his cudgel on the armor of the dead half-orc.
Dyrant surveys the carnage.
"I don't think we are done here, by no means. But we should slice the heads off the dead here, lest the next foul Wee Jasian raise them again to fight against us. Hmm..." Dyrant casts Detect Magic and begins to identify and haversack pretty much every item that he can fit.
Min spellcraft is 21+2+1 = 24.
Dyrant will take special care in de-magicking the priest, checking his items twice over and even drawing his own dagger to remove the head.

Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |

Dyrant walks over to cudgel the priest (no, not Atol...the evil one...no still not Atol...the *other* evil one).
Dyrant gives him two cudgels to the noggin.
"Take that infidel! Wee Jas is crap."
*whack!*
"Magic is an illusion...so is your God! Your god is weak!"
*whack!*
Dyrant sighs with religious ecstasy.

The combat over, Finneas sheepishly takes the Doctors extract of bark skin and drinks it.

Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |

Dyrant will move the Blessing of St. Cuthbert to Atol and Finn. He will also haverpocket the headband and belts.
He will take a position back from but within line of sight to the doors.
"Hmm...probably should have asked a follower for a map of the place. Well, next time we crush a church to dust, we'll plan better."

Atol Lem |

Atol pines at the headband and watches as Dyrant puts it in his haversack. sigh
He prepares himself and lines up with the party at the door.
"How do you think the whole church turned evil Dyrant? How did we not notice? How did everybody not notice?"
He grips his cudgel and frowns.

Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |

Dyrant looks at Atol's envious sighing and hands over the headband to the portly priest.
"If you want it, take it, Atol. We've always shared among ourselves freely. Take it if you want it." Dyrant offers up the headband. "We can clean off the dirt and blood...and I think my mighty cudgel might have knocked a few gems loose, but it still serve you well."
Dyrant sneers at Atol's other comment.
"Why would we notice a lesser church like this turning evil? My guess: jealousy. Their hearts turned blacker when they saw the love the people had for the Cudgel. They realized that they could never compete...and so turned dark in their sadness," Dyrant replies seriously. "No matter though. We shall clean their infection...the fires of purity will burn in here today."

Atol Lem |

Atol points to his phylactery of positive channeling.
"I can't. They both fit on the same part of my head. I can't get them both to fit - I need two heads. I think we need healing more anyway." Atol sighs again.
"Jealousy?!" Atol reels back a bit. "Wow, they must have been really jealous." He looks at Finneas and Glimmil. I hope they don't get jealous...

Finneas Glenn |

"What's that word, Doctor? You told me the other day. It starts with a H. Hue? Hueb...heubriss? I think that's right."
Finneas looks helpfully between the other members of the party, sure at least one of them knows what he's talking about.
"Well Dyrant, which way does your cudgel say we go now?"

Glimmil |

Glimmil, astride Cog, trots up to the pair of doors and paces between them.
"I've always found there's a heroic way to make this decision. The Great Garl was faced with such challenges many times in his illustrious career and used a similar method."
Glimmil clears his throat and begins alternating which door he's pointing to.
"Eenie, meenie, minie, mai ... catch a beholder by its eye..."
Confident his process has led to a selection infused with divine will, Glimmil will open the rightmost of the doors.

Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |

Dyrant suppresses a smile at Glim, lest he lost his divinely inspired sense of retribution and concedes that the right door is the right door.

Doctor Abner Svengalu Toffitt |

Toffitt smirks at Dyrant's bluster and Finneas' temple school word."Hubris. Yes. The tower door, then?" He opens the door and examines the floor beyond for traps before moving onward.
Perception: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (17) + 25 = 42

GM_Chris |

The door opens to reveal two doors and a staircase. The first door opens to a storage area with dozens of boxes and shelves. Ceremonial gear, robes, and other mundane supplies fill the room. A musty smells fills the air, mixed with hints of exotic incense.
The next door opens to a bedroom that is immaculately clean and perfectly ordered. The thick carpet is embroidered with hundreds of small designs of skulls and bones and arcane runes. The room's furnishings include a large, well-made bed, two large armoires filled with rich clothes and ceremonial robes, and a large desk.
The papers on the desk reflect only the Cathederal's day-to-day business for the last two months. There are some gilded candlesticks, a small money pouch with a 100 platinum pieces, and a couple nice wall paintings of Wee Jas if the party really feels like pillaging.
The stairs lead up to a room with a thick red carpet with the holy symbol of Wee Jas covering the entire floor. The circular chamber has no windows to the outside, but a large window, currently covered by a thick curtain, overlooks the Grand Hall through which you entered. The furniture consists of a well-made bed, a beautiful wooden armoire, and a small but beautifully carved wooden desk. This desk also contains a fair amount of paperwork that outlines the day-to-day activities of the Cathederal's faithful.
Another staircase ascends further up the internal tower.
You can spend some time searching the rooms, continue upwards, or go back to the double doors in the Grand Hall.

Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |

Dyrant casts Detect Magic, checking on each safe room. He takes mental inventory of the items he sees, judging whether it will burn or serve St. Cuthbert in another way.
He waits as Dr. Toffitt finishes his quick search, hoping that they will have more time to be more thorough later.
"I would prefer to go to the double doors downstairs; I believe our foes lie that way...but could be wrong. To easy my worry of ambush, let me send the eyes up to scout for us and some to watch the below."
While Toffitt searches, Dyrant will send two eyes up to scout and return(one following the other) and four down (apart, paired) to keep watch (return if humanoids or strangeness show up).

GM_Chris |

Toffitt finds a false bottom to one of the desk drawers. Inside is a small sheaf of letters exchanged between Embril Aloustinai (Head priestess of the church of Wee Jas absent for about 2 months) and Fetor Abradius. All but one of the letters are brief reports that allude to a continuing and taxing search for something unnamed. Each letter concludes that all remains on schedule, but that the final answers still elude the searcher.
One of the letters provides more details:
High Priestess,
As many have heard me say, the cages alone will not afford the completion of the ritual. The Cagewrights have built a matrix on which to support them, but due to the shortsightedness of the others, I have been left out of these discussions. You are my only ally amongst the Thirteen now. You must warn them that there is more hidden in the Soul Pillars that could prove of great import to their plans. What more is needed I cannot say, and so I continue to explore the mysteries of the Soul Pillars at great peril. Vittriss Bale grows ever more restless, and the insanity that lies frozen in Karran-Kural begins to stir. Yet I shall remain here until the end, in hope of unveiling the last of the weavers' hidden lore. Still, the risk is great. My price has doubled.
F. Abradius

Finneas Glenn |

"What do the letters say? What do they mean? Shouldn't we be looking for Ike?"
Finneas watches the path behind the group warily.

Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |

What the ready or time limit for the eyes downstairs to return?
Would like that tthey search in the main chamber until they find medium creature or bigger movement and/or strangeness or one of them dies. No set return time.

Doctor Abner Svengalu Toffitt |

"Proof that Embril is part of the Cagewright conspiracy. And names. Let us move on. Upward?" Toffitt moves to the stairwell and continues to do cursory examinations as he climbs. His echolocation continues to pick out what might be unseen.

Dyrant reads over the notes and recalls that Vittriss Bale was an ancient green dragon who allied with the creators of Karran-Kural, a portion of the lost city that was founded by the spell weaver empire centuries agao. In the tomb complex, the spell weavers studied the relationship between death and cold energy. The exact location is unknown, but rumors are that it was located near what is now the Demonskar.
One of Dyrant's eyes returns from upstairs with the image of its fellow eye reaching the top of the stairs before being splattered by a giant claw.
You visited part of the spell weaver city with the fire giant blacksmith at Vaprak's Voice. Going to have to wait until tonight for going upstairs.
P.S. No crying about the next encounter. You've invaded the holy church of a major religion and are at the suggested party level. Howevever, I think the EL is in the high teens. Have fun! ;-)

Glimmil |

Glimmil pronounces the name, correctly for once, a few times.
"Vitris Bale... Vitriss Bale... Vitriss Bale."
The gnomes shakes his head.
"No, doesn't ring a bell. It's a big dragon this time? Does that mean we'd only need two to make a shield for Finneas?"
Glimmil continues thinking, the "cogs" inside his head spinning.
"Wait, is the green dragon here? Inside Cauldron?!"

Doctor Abner Svengalu Toffitt |

Toffitt gulps. "If that's the dragon, what will we need to fight it?"
Knowledge (arcane) on green dragons: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 10 + 2 = 16
"Finneas, mayhap I could prepare an elixir that would make you invisible for a minute—and stay invisible, even while fighting."

Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |

1d20 + 19 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 19 + 2 = 25 Know (Arcana) "the claw"
Dyrant hums and haws, wondering if he still has the will for this fight.
"A claw...might have been big. Interesting...what is up there?"

Glimmil |

Glimmil nods bravely.
"Don't worry, guys. I can just ride up on Cog and get it's attention and hold it in place while the rest of you attack it from all sides."
Glimmil makes several gestures imitating mock combat.
"I'm sure that'll work. All the other dragons have been relatively simple. And this one's green, which are supposed to be one of the weaker ones, right?"

Atol Lem |

"A green dragon huh?" Atol shrugs his shoulders, "I don't like dragons. They make me nervous."
"Let's not separate too much this time. I mean we have to be outside of breath weapon range I guess, but not scattered so far I can't heal folks if they fall."
Atol bites his lip wishing he had a scone. Why do these people hate us so?

Dyrant Maynor, the Pre-Sainted |

Dyrant explains what the eyes saw.
"Doesn't make sense to me, of course. Claws or not, something ain't right."
Dyrant nods to continue, but not before begging Aralynn for the gift of flight again.

Glimmil |

Glimmil and Cog pace impatiently, oblivious to danger.
"Gray renders. What's a gray render? They're evil right? Because if they're evil - I have one word for them."
Glimmil nods and points his hook-hammer at the others.
"Claw-Whomper."
As he returns his weapon to his side, Glimmil ponders his boast.
"Wait, is Claw-Whomper one word or two? I've always imagined it's abbreviated -- does that make it only one word, then?"
