NPC: M Kobold First Watch Door Guard and Hall Monitor

Oh, right, dudes, hold on, um, let me *umph* just got to undo these, *hrmph*, uh, wait, no left and then right twice. Um, *urg* uh, no, wait. Okay, this one first, *ouch*, no, wait. Okay! got it!

Male, old, old, Male

The Kobold opens the door after what sounds like a struggle with several locks.

When the door swings open (which is does surprisingly quietly) you see a long chamber that is well lighted from several short metal braziers. There are three low tables on the left side of the chamber, and on the right is a area where several Kobold families are sitting down eat on the floor and they appear to be sharing a single book, passing it around and taking turns reading a passage from it.

Sitting at the tables are a few adult Kobolds (you are not sure, but it looks as if there are both male and female kobolds, or at least that is what you would guess, as some of the kobolds have more delicate features, wider and larger eyes, and course, dark hair growing between their ears on the tops of their heads that on some falls to below their shoulders). These adults appear to be eating soup out of large but not deep, bowls with over sized metal spoons.

At one of the tables is a peculiar looking individual. He is obviously not a Kobold, but he wears a clever Kobold disguise. He is also sitting by a bowl of soup, but it does not look like he is eating.

"Hurm, doesn't like a place to get a decent drink. Hope it is safe at least. "

Male Tiefling Rogue/1

Upon hearing the Kobold he has come to know as Mortie fiddling with the locks of the large door, Kairon lifts his head. His eyes narrow. Why is he opening the door this time? Benny's shift isn't over yet. His tail flicks with annoyance, but he keeps his emotions in check, tucking his tail between his legs, and his eyes never leaving the now open door.

Much to his surprise, and delight, a group of five travelers enter. They are not Kobold either judging by their height, size and gear. On the contrary, they are two humans, one larger than the other and heavily armoured; two dwarves and one halfing. Kairon does his best to commit each face to memory just in case he needs to track down any assailants for later - if they do prove an enemy against King Arman.

Though he is curious as to know why these strangers decided to bunk down with the Kobolds, Kairon isn't about to announce his presence just yet. If they are truly interested, let them speak to him first. Then he will be able to determine whether they are friend or foe.

For now, he picks up the bowl and tucks into the food, grimacing slightly at the taste of vegetable without meat. Oh, how he misses the sublime taste of tough flesh and blood. Blood...

He grinned, his tail twitching once more at the thought of feeling warm blood on his hands again.

Seeing the medium - sized scaled figure eating with the kobolds, Hennet freaks out and hides behind Anders, Look out, it's a dragonborn! It'll breathe fire and gnaw on your bones! Their saliva is an acid that'll eat through metal and they work for the Shadow Guards!

Barbarian/3; HP: 38/38; AC: 15; Perception: +2; Rage 3/3 per Day, 10/10 Rounds; HD 3/3; Inspiration 1/1

Anders steps to the larger humanoid.

Afternoon, friend. I see food, but is there anything to drink in here?

"This is no Dragonborn. This is a devil's child, a hellspawn, a Tiefling!"

Beldak waves a hand at his companions to quiet them down. Between name calling and thirst quenching they just might pique his ire. Though Tieflings are used to scorn and judgment, like most odd things, it does not mean they have to stand for it.

"Kepla'nas throdenilt sklooh vur jiko achthend petranas," Is there wine and 6 more soups? he asks a nearby Kobold.

"Please friends, give the stranger some space! Let's sit and talk. I asked if more food was on the way. Sit, sit." Beldak dusts off some of the seating with his hand and offers them to his friends.

He then turns to the room with the Kobold's passing the book around.
"Mel'pal'voyenu ekess wux shio. Nomag si ocuir batobot turasjir?" Good evening to you all. May I see that book? he says to the current reader?

Male Tiefling Rogue/1

Raising an eyebrow, Kairon smiles at the two humans, flashing fangs.

"My name is Kairon and I am no Dragonborn, Human. Please take a seat."

He gestures to the empty seats beside and in front of him. "What brings your party here?"

Day 2, Saturday morning, turn 78, approximately 12:50 pm

As the different humanoids step into the Kobold Hovel, they are greeted with cries of, Welcome, and How’s it going man?,

Hennet gasps out a warning when his eyes fall on the strange Kobold disguised man-creature, but before a panic can spread, Beldak calms the room with a few quick words in draconic, and a reminder to his friends to not be too hasty.

Ander’s asks for drink, and a Kobold female, sitting at a table, asks,

NPC: F Kobold Guildmaster and Chief of the Forge

What’s your pleasure, handsome human? We have beer, apple cider, vodka, ten years in the wood, and even some brandy and, she pauses when realizes what Beldak has said, and then goes on,Oh, we red wines if that will suit you, and there’s plenty of soup. Come over here, little one who speaks our native tongue, and sit next to me and tell me why you out this way. My name is Lorelei, what’s yours? And who are your friends?

Male, old, old, Male

As Beldak considers the request, he reaches out his hand and asks to see the book being passed around. It is an oversized book, bound in fine leather, but it is not thick. The title on it is in common,

Beldak:
the title of the book is “The Little Candle Maker and the Forest Trolls,” and it is a common, very old tale that goes back to oral traditions and tells the story of a dwarven candle maker and a group of kindly forest trolls*. The story is told in pictures, in this work, and shows how the forest trolls help the dwarf to get out of a troubling situation with the dwarven king when he falls in love with the daughter of a dwarven noble. Now the noble wants his daughter to marry the dwarven prince, but the king cannot simply say no, and cannot have his son refuse the will of the king, and so a contest between the two suitors is arranged. The dwarven prince is arrogant, and even though he does not want to marry the nobleman’s daughter he does not like to lose either, so the trolls arrange for several outrageous incidents to occur that allow the candle maker to win the contests while also making the prince look like he is the better man after all. This story is a childlike version of an incident that may have historical significance, when an ancient dwarven prince first made peace with the forest trolls of this island.

Dwarf (AC 19, HP 13, Str +5, Dex +1, Con +3, Int +0, Wis +1, Chr -2)

"No ale? I'll take Vodka and some of the soup. " and he ambles over to a place to sit down.

NPC: M Kobold First Watch Door Guard and Hall Monitor

We've got little ale left here, and the brewers have been making small beer for the past two weeks. I keep telling 'em to make more ale, but they've ruined all but two of the casks and now they're worried about ruining the last two. Mortie says over his shoulder to the dwarf, as he goes about shutting and locking the door.

Wiz1 HP 9/9 AC:13 PassPerc 14 // Str+1, Dex+3, Con+3, Int*+5, Wis*+4, Chr+1 XP: 34 HD: 1/1d6

"Ah a fine story if I do say so myself!" Beldak says as he quickly flips through the book committing it to memory. He hands the book back and has a seat next to Lorelei.

"My name is Beldak. This is Anders, Hennet, Haarold and Duglin! Perhaps our Dwarven companions here can assist your brewmaster in repair if not better use of your implementations?!"

Barbarian/3; HP: 38/38; AC: 15; Perception: +2; Rage 3/3 per Day, 10/10 Rounds; HD 3/3; Inspiration 1/1

Aye, until then, I'll have a beer.

Anders sits down with the others and awaits his dinner.

Male Tiefling Rogue/1

Patiently, Kairon watches as the party moves to get situated with food and drink. Reaching over, he refills his own flagon before taking a sip. His eyes once again shift over to the human who called him dragonborn, and smiles. His tail curls around his ankles, the tip flicking this way and that, waiting for the situation to calm down before he inquires as to their visit again. Maybe they heard his question the first time and chose to ignore it. He isn't sure, but it does no good if he proves annoying. Patience is the name of the game, and well off for Kairon too, since he plays with this mistress well.

NPC: F Kobold Guildmaster and Chief of the Forge

Welcome to the Loamstone Kobold Hollow Hovel Lorelei says.

The traveling companions are offered hot and spicy, yellow squash and rutabaga soup, salted biscuits (a small cracker like cake), and all they care to drink.

It is a busy chamber, Kobolds come and go, and there seems to be a never ending string of hungry kobolds and hot bowls of soup coming from somewhere?

Wiz1 HP 9/9 AC:13 PassPerc 14 // Str+1, Dex+3, Con+3, Int*+5, Wis*+4, Chr+1 XP: 34 HD: 1/1d6

"Kairon, might we join you with your permission rather than simply overrunning your quietude? Our purpose here is to investigate this castle on the mountain. I see no point in keeping that secret for what other purpose would one have in this neck of the woods?"

Beldak smiles wide even for a halfling and takes a bite of the soup. His eyes go wide as the stew fills him with a warmth that trail rations never will.

"Lorelei! This soup is delectable!" Several spoonfuls fly through the air only to be devoured. "Might you be able to tell us if there is a passage to the castle from here? Maybe, one not so direct as the front door?"

Barbarian/3; HP: 38/38; AC: 15; Perception: +2; Rage 3/3 per Day, 10/10 Rounds; HD 3/3; Inspiration 1/1

Aye, a backdoor is the way to go, if ya have ken of one. There is supposedly a princess for us to rescue.

Anders manages a brief word between gulps of beer and mouthfuls of food. his table manners are atrocious.

BRRRRRRP...

Fine fare ya have here.

NPC: F Kobold Guildmaster and Chief of the Forge

A backdoor? No, probably not, but then again, wow, I don’t know, maybe. You see that entrance you can see on the mountain side, that’s way up, way up, about half a league up the trail, maybe far less as the crow flies, but still a ways up there. Now some folks say that there’s more than one level to that palace and all the levels are deeper than that entrance there, but, still I don’t think our tunnels connect to anything that high up. Sure, though, she says scratching her head and twisting her hair as she turns from Beldak to Anders and stares up into the human’s eyes, It might be possible. You’d be searching some tunnels we haven’t explored, maybe for a really long time, and maybe even getting lost, before you actually found a connection. I don’t think it’s worth the try.

Male Tiefling Rogue/1

Eyes narrowing at the halfling, Kairon manages a smile nevertheless and gestures to the seats near him. "I have no problem with you joining me. So... off to rescue the Princess. What a coincidence we meet, indeed. That is why I have ventured here as well. His Majesty has asked if I may go and find a way to bring his daughter back."

He turns his head to listen to Lorelei as she provides her best answer to the travelers. "I believe a more straightforward approach to the castle is sound, providing you lurk within the shadows. Quite possible, you could find natives from that castle to help you navigate its terrain. Willing or no..." He pauses for a moment as if a thought occurred to him, his lips creasing for a fraction of a second before another smile replaces the hesitation. "Perhaps, you will be willing to let me join you? You might be able to use a man of my caliber and I certainly would enjoy company."

Barbarian/3; HP: 38/38; AC: 15; Perception: +2; Rage 3/3 per Day, 10/10 Rounds; HD 3/3; Inspiration 1/1

So, Kairon, you're the sneaky sort, eh? Ya any good in a scrap?

Male Tiefling Rogue/1

Delight sparks in Kairon's eyes at the larger human's question. It seems almost like he purrs when he responds. "I do tend to sneak around quite a bit, but I am made for combat. Though probably not the front on confrontation I'm sure you're more accustomed to, judging by your appearance. I prefer catching my target off-guard."

Wiz1 HP 9/9 AC:13 PassPerc 14 // Str+1, Dex+3, Con+3, Int*+5, Wis*+4, Chr+1 XP: 34 HD: 1/1d6

"Kairon, if you'd like to tag along then we'd like to have you do so. Others have come and gone before so we'd be glad to increase our numbers. You look the type to have unique skills that may be useful in a castle of peril."

Beldak's spoon clatters into an empty bowl. "Lorelei, That was simply delicious! he says wiping his mouth. "Now, where do your tunnels lead if not anywhere specific? How long have you been down here? I wasn't aware that Kobolds were miners by trade. Have you found anything interesting in these caves? Things of Dwarven make possibly?"

NPC: F Kobold Guildmaster and Chief of the Forge

Lorelei turns her eyes away from Anders, with some difficulty, and answers Beldak

Oh, um, what, oh the tunnels. Our hovel has been here since Volanda opened the tavern above. She paid Nigel Loamstone, Benny’s grandfather, to excavate the cellar, and when he did the job he began expanding the cellar outward, to connect it to other cellars in the village, and eventually to the main Kobold Hovel, Jackson Springs Hovel, which is near where the river starts. So, I guess, our Hovel is the immediate chambers and tunnels here under Apple Grove Village, extending east toward Split Cavern Hovel. There were some collapses, and cave ins, when the village was burned down repeatedly by the goblins from the mountains, but a lot of the cellars are still viable, and we have a pretty good spread here. Oh, we aren’t miners, by trade, but we can make of go of it if we have to. Loamstone Hovel has a forge, and bloomer, a few good smiths and craftsmen capable of working in iron, silver, copper, gold, whatever you need, and we can work rough stones into some fine jewelry if I do brag about it myself. Dwarven make, hmmm nope, uh, nope, uh, wait, I suppose there’s the coffins under the old church, the dwarven church that is, in the cellar below the ruin of the church, but nothing else, I can think of anyway. Now if you go to Split Cavern Hollow, and then head north, just to the east of the mountain there, you can reach Founder’s Hovel, and they can show you the way to what everybody says is an old Dwarven city below the ground. That’s a big place, lots of neat south-north, east-west square tunnels, and many chambers, but it was abandoned centuries ago and I don’t think you’d find anything there. Even we don’t find things there anymore. You know there might be a way to get into the lowest levels of the palace from there, but you want to stay away from there, believe you me. It’s crawling with slugs and jellys these days, sneak right up on you and suck you brains out. Nope, I’d stay away from there.

Male, old, old, Male

I sent a PM to Duglin, but there has been no response, I hope I didn't drive him away and he can get back to us when he has time.

So either before or after the palace, I'll need to find Founder's Hovel.

NPC: F Kobold Guildmaster and Chief of the Forge

Nah, never did any of that silvered weapon work, though I'm sure we could do it, and, wait, what did you say? overnight, bwa, ha, ha, overnight, yah, right. Wait, hmm, hold on,

She begins running her fingers over the table, as if drawing some imagined plan out as she thinks through a new process.

I bet we could, you know, silver a weapon in a day, if we had a top quality weapon, made with the right steel, sure, it sounds like a challenge. I'd need to shift some things around in the forge chamber, but I bet we - could - do it

"ACK!!" Haarold startles the halfling with his question but regains composure with a quick measured lesson in supernatural weaknesses.

"Well it is said that certain monsters fear silvered weapons. Certain ones cannot heal from wounds caused by silver weapons. Certain ones feel no harm from weapons that are not silver. Now since one of these monsters is a vampire and we are heading to the Palace of the Vampire Queen we might do well to have one our weapons enhanced so to speak?!"

Beldak nods up and down in approval of his lesson. "Who's got good steel?"

Aye, my axe is solid too.

Male Tiefling Rogue/1

Kairon shifts, standing slightly to show an assortment of finely made daggers in richly decorated sheathes and a rapier, encrusted heavily with jewels along the pommel and gold inlaid, along his waist. "My weapons are forged of high quality. They should do nicely."

Male, old, old, Male

The remainder of the evening is spent among the Kobolds who show you great hospitality and are generous with food and drink to spare.

They show you to a nearby cellar, below one of the burned out buildings above. This one has no stairs (the kobolds torn them down, for safety) and they tell you that the building above had a door I the floor, not a standing door, and it is buried in rubble, so you should be safe from the possibility of anyone dropping in on you.

It is dry, but cool, and the kobolds advise you to keep a fire small, for warmth, as the Hovel has many vents that can remove the smoke from fires, but a big fire can fill a chamber with too much heat and smoke and that can throw off the natural ventilation.

In the morning you are surprised when the kobolds offer you eggs (real chicken eggs) and flat bread, with a beverage served hot, that is dark black in color, aromatic and bitter, but energizing. They tell you it is Coffee, a delicacy in this land as it is imported to the dwarven island and the kobolds only buy small amounts and serve it only when they have guests.

You eat your fill, check your equipment and make sure you have everything you need. When the sun is above the trees in the east, a few of the kobolds escort you to the ruined fence line, and show you the path that leads up the mountain, reminding you to keep to the right.
The path is narrow. The ground is covered with shale pieces, making it a slow walk and keeping you mindful of where you place your boots.
Yu march single file up the trail. There are trees to the left, up the mountain sloop, and more to the right, down the mountain side, but they are not large. The trunks of the trees here are no larger than a dwarf’s leg in diameter and grow no more than thirty feet in height.
You climb at an angle of about six degrees, often changing to fifteen degrees, but never requiring you to use your hands. After awhile you come to a switch back, and turn completely around and now the downhill side of the mountain is on your left. As you climb higher and higher the air becomes colder. The scent of the trees is crisp in the cool air, and the sound of squirrels in the trees betrays the mountainside’s ominous nature almost making it seem like you are just on a simple pleasure hike on a sunny fall day.

You keep walking up the path until it becomes level after a good portion of the morning is gone.

Day 2, Sunday morning, turn 58 (approximate time of day, 9:40 am)

When the trail becomes level you are now on a ledge of the mountain side that is nearly one hundred feet wide and sixty feet deep. It has been cleared of trees, but wild flowers and shrubs grow here. There are boulders, and piles of rocks, but it is not crowded with them. The mountain side here is a flat tower of stone as wide as the ledge and rising to a height of at least eighty feet. In the center of this wall of natural stone is a pair of built towers. They are half round, their flat sides are against the wall, and these towers have no openings but they do seem to have crenelations at their tops, and maybe roofs. The towers are twenty feet high.

Between the two towers is a dark opening in the mountain side. It is twenty feet wide. There doesn’t appear to be a door, from where you stand examining it from a safe distance.

This is the entrance to the Palace of the Vampire Queen

I would like the party to determine a marching order; you can talk about it in the discussion thread. Also, can I get some resolution on exactly what weapons are going to be silvered and who is deducting the cost?

Dwarf (AC 19, HP 13, Str +5, Dex +1, Con +3, Int +0, Wis +1, Chr -2)

Haarold will walk up to the door and see if it is open.

Anders follows his lead.

Male, old, old, Male

Day 2, Sunday morning, turn 58, approximately 9:40 am

Cautiously, Haarold and Anders approach the entrance to give it a better look.

About ten to fifteen feet back, in the shadows of the opening in the wall between the towers there is a doorway. The doorway is made from blocks of granite each block is three feet wide and three feet high, and the top of the doorway is solid cap stone spanning a distance of ten feet and resting on the flanking stones stacked to either side that make the doorway. It looks like there is a pair of large doors here.

The doors appear to be made of limestone. Each door is nearly five feet wide and over eight feet high. There is a slight gap, of only an inch or so where the doors come together in the middle, and a similar gap on the floor and above the doors between the doors and the cap stone. Each door is set into the stacked granite stones that make the doorway, and it is obvious that remarkable workmanship went into this design as the doors must be resting on pivot points carved into the granite blocks. You can tell right away that the doors must be pushed to open from this side, but you do not know how well they are balanced.

Standing a few feet from the doors you can hear a low whistling coming from the doors and you can feel a cold wind blowing through the one inch gap between the doors.

The ground on this side of the doors is hard, packed dirt, but you can see that the floor under the door is made of cut and placed stones.
There are no signs of anything having passed this way recently, and other than the continuous low whistling of the wind through the doors, coming at you, all is silent.

Day 2, Sunday morning, turn 58, approximately 9:40 am

When Beldak brings a little light into the alcove where the doors are located, it does not do much to answer any questions the group may have about the doors. In the light it appears even more apparent that the doors are expertly fashioned, if simple in design.

Beldak:
You do not see anything that would suggest a hidden mechanism of any kind, and your investigation of the doors reveals they are not locked or appear to be trapped.

Dwarf (AC 19, HP 13, Str +5, Dex +1, Con +3, Int +0, Wis +1, Chr -2)

"Yeah go for it! Seems like the easiest way in and I detect no danger in the vicinity." Beldak tells Haarold as the group stands before the looming entrance.

Male Tiefling Rogue/1

Kairon watches the rest in silence, contemplating his next moves. He's unsure if he can trust them just yet, but if they are able to get him closer to the Princess his job would prove easier. He stares at the doors as well.

"Masterful workmanship indeed."

Male, old, old, Male

Day 2, Sunday morning, turn 58, approximately 9:40 am

Crowding in a bit closer to Haarold and Anders, the rest of the group becomes anxious to see what is beyond the doors, and when everyone feels satisfied that it is safe, Haarold leans into one of the doors.
He is expecting it to be hard to move, it should weigh hundreds if not a few thousand pounds, but he is surprised when it takes only a slight amount of effort. It isn’t easy, but the door swings open with just a shove of his shoulder.

When the door is opened it reveals a passageway, some twenty feet wide, and fifteen feet high. The walls are carved from the mountain itself, and are smooth with no marks or blemishes. The ceiling is reinforced with wooden beams placed into holes bored into the walls. Beldak’s light shines down the passageway and in the shadows ahead, some forty feet, on the walls to the left and right are recessed areas and the faint outline of more similar doors, and beyond that the passageway continues into darkness.

the passageway is 20 feet wide and goes due north, straight, as far as anyone can see. At the 40, and 45 foot mark, going north, on the west passageway wall and the east passageway wall are pairs of doors similar to the one at the entrance. Each pair of doors is made up of two stone doors. So there is a double door on the left, a double door on the right, and the passageway continues northward.

Dwarf (AC 19, HP 13, Str +5, Dex +1, Con +3, Int +0, Wis +1, Chr -2)

"Damned big place. This was sure a lot of work to dig out. Guess we should check doors as we come to them. " then he will advance up to the first doors.

Day 2, Sunday morning, turn 59, approximately 9:50 am

Advancing cautiously, the party moves northward. When they reach the two pairs of doors to either side of the passageway, they can now see further into the palace.

Standing quietly, for a few moments the group listens for any sounds coming from the areas beyond the doors, but all is quiet.

To the north it looks as if the passageway opens up into either a large chamber or intersection of some kind just at the limit of your range of vision.

Dwarf (AC 19, HP 13, Str +5, Dex +1, Con +3, Int +0, Wis +1, Chr -2)

Haarold will try the door on the left.
