Also, I think the whirlwind Nsizi is talking about is the one here that's our pet air elemental:

Nsizi wrote:

The air elemental, frustrated in its inability to damage the lizard, spun itself into a raging whirlwind, and engulfed the flying mjusi.

The plinth is still right behind Min, correct? I know it's not according to the map, but we walked across it from the windy tunnel to get to where we are, and it hasn't moved on its own?

Actually the plinth does move on its own but we can say that it's right behind Min if you want.

The whirlwind ability only affects creatures at least one size smaller.

Eberron: you don't need to read everything, I could have asked some of the decent players to write a summary or something.

How does it read to someone not involved in the game?

As Zeljka hefted the spear a second time, Nsizi knew that this throw could well determine the outcome of the battle. "Spirits, guide her arm, help us defeat this creature that dishonours you so."

cast guidance, +1 on next roll

Female half-orc Slayer/7

Zeljka felt Nsizi's magic flow into her, specifically her throwing arm. In that moment, she was sure that it would hit her target...it had to after all because it was their only chance to drag him down to their level.

spear,studied target,guidance: 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 2 + (2) + 1 = 25 Using her AP because I can't hit him otherwise
damage: 1d8 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 2 = 14

With her augmented strength the spear pierced Daruthek through the abdomen. The weapon was affected by gravity, making it an effective anchor as Achahut began to pull on the rope. With no possibility of the spear pulling out of the Swamp Speaker when pulled, he was dragged back to the ground.

YES! BLOODY FINALLY!!!

Achahut let out a bark of satisfaction as the grey-skin finally pierced Daruthek. He started to pull on the rope, and was well pleased when he saw that their plan had worked. The spear seemed to be caught on a rib, as it did not pull free when Achahut pulled. Working quickly, he pulled his enemy down to their level. "Now we will see how your lord helps you."

Seeing the evil elemental attack Min, Nsizi commanded his two, smaller elementals to keep it occupied.

aether elemental telekinetic throw, Fort save DC 12: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
air elemental melee slam: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

The aether elemental wrapped its multicoloured tendrils around the evil elemental, and it suddenly vanished, only to reappear on the other side of the chamber, where it slammed into the stone walls with wicked force.

The smaller air elemental flew swiftly after its displaced floe and slammed into the larger one, causing chunks of air and wind to swirl away into nothingness.

I just meant that in the past we've tied it off and it stayed where it was until we came back. I don't think we ever untied it after we came out of the wind tunnel. I was just wondering if she had somewhere to 5-foot-step to.

If she can 5-foot-step back onto the plinth...

Min stepped back onto the tethered plinth and discharged her wand directly into the air elemental's windy innards.

5-foot-step; magic missile at elemental 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

If she can't 5-foot-step...

Min attempted to brace herself against the buffeting winds, watching the elemental warily, ready to dodge its attacks.

Total defense: AC = 21

What? All that, and you don't even give us a Huzzah? That hurts our feelings.

FYI, I'm traveling out of the country for a few days. It is my intent to post once a day (and even try to recap) but don't be alarmed if I disappear for a couple of days. I'll be back home on May 9th, when posting should be back to normal, or at least as normal as possible considering I'll have to catch up at work. :)

Female half-orc Slayer/7

As Achahut reeled in Daruthek, Zeljka readied her falchion. As soon he was within her reach, she started to carve him up. She began by targetting his thigh with her blade. But his squirming and the nearness of the others, caused her to pull up at the last minute and she missed.

+1falchion,studied target,bull's strength: 1d20 + 13 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 13 + 2 = 17
damage: 2d4 + 9 ⇒ (2, 2) + 9 = 13

Hey, you tell us to write our intended results, and our intended result was to use that rope to pull him down. Nothing subtle about it... :)

Relief flooded through Nsizi as Daruthek finally was pulled into reach. Putting out his hand, Nsizi touched the swamp speaker, and electricity crackled through him into the mjusi.

touch of electricity, melee touch attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Meanwhile, the two elementals continued to attack the evil air elemental, slamming it against columns, and more wispy bits of it scattered and disappeared.
aether elemental melee slam: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
air elemental melee slam: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Achahut bared his teeth as he grabbed up his pick. "Here is your answer, Daruthek. I will not join you. But you can join your lord now." Swinging the weapon overhand, he brought it down on the the Swamp Speaker's skull.

attack: 1d20 + 9 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 9 + 6 = 23 Using my AP to hit
damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Min waited for Nsizi to move forward and surround the fallen Swamp Speaker; then she stepped away from the elemental into the space the Bas'o vacated and discharged her wand at the lizardman, the arcane bullet weaving its way neatly between her allies.

5-foot-step southwest; use wand 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

rolls:

Nsizi will save, DC 15: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

air elemental to hit Min: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19, hit
damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Daruthek to hit Achahut: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19, miss
damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

"Zeljka," Min remarked crossly, barely holding her own against the buffeting winds, "concentrate, and get this over with!" She fired her wand at the tough, little lizardfolk once again.

Combat Advice on Zeljka: +2 on next hit vs. Swamp Speaker; magic missile 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

Achahut struck again, and this time the pick sliced through the mjusi's lower back, nearly cleaving his tail from his body.

Between Min and Achahut we got him. So Zeljka, I recommend a coup de grace.:)

His heart filled with terror, Nsizi stumbled backwards, nearly falling into the swirling moat. Catching his feet, he found his way onto the plinth and ran for it.

The two elementals continued their coordinated attack, and finally Daruthek's summoned elemental dissipated into nothingness.

aether elemental melee slam: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
air elemental melee slam: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Female half-orc Slayer/7

Zeljka grunted in satisfaction as both Min and Achahut bring Daruthek to death's door. She raised her falchion in the hope of finishing the evil Swamp Speaker off for good.

+1falchion,studied target,bull's strength,combat advice: 1d20 + 13 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 13 + 2 + 2 = 20

Son of a...hopefully a coup de grace means his AC would be lower. Otherwise this is more for story telling purposes than actual purposes :)

Min looked down at the Swamp Speaker, then up at the ceiling overhead. "Do you think that's it? Do you think the storm has ended outside?" She looked at Achahut. "Nsizi, check the lizardfolk children. Maybe they're not...."

As terror in his breast died down, Nsizi moved back into the chamber. He solemnly thanked the elementals who had assisted them, and they returned to their home planes. Grateful that the others didn't question the source of his cowardice, Nsizi nodded to Min and moved around the chamber, checking the children, hoping against hope to find that they yet lived.

Achahut moved among his dead, stripping them of anything the tribe could use. He then kicked their naked bodies into the water, denying their spirits a peaceful afterlife.

Female half-orc Slayer/7

Zeljka couldn't bear to deal with possibly dead children. She had barely survived the loss of her own children and the lifeless bodies of the small mjusi were drudging up memories that she had taken great care to bury.

To distract herself, the half-orc joins Achahut in his searchings. She helps pull everything off all the bodies before unceremoniously dispatching them. "These will be helpful for both the mjusi and Pridon's Hearth. Hopefully there are settlements to go back to."

I intend to wrap things up later today...

Min, I would hate to lose you as a player; how's your indoctrination into Eberron coming along? :)

Fabian Benavente wrote:

I find that actually reading through the combats can be useful in identifying "holes" in the party that might be filled by an additional character. (For instance, our post-Evalina narrative in this game points out that we suck at range.)

I see what you mean about the characters in that game. They are very well-drawn with lots of depth and quirks, but more, the relationships between PCs are well-defined, also. (The warforged, and their perspective on things, are hilarious.)

Ultimately, though, I just can't wrap my head around the setting, with living constructs that can sleep and get tired, and living spells, and things. It's just a little too out-there for me. I couldn't envision a character that fit in the world. Thanks for the invitation, though!

I'm sorry to hear that but thanks for taking a serious look at the game.

I'll continue to look for a fifth player.

What about Evelina from Frosty's game (aka Tattoo)?

She would be really good but I thought she said that she was busy.

Feel free to PM her (or anyone else that may be interested).

If not, then I'll open it up to the boards next week or so.

Turn 219 - Sunshine

Nicely done!

Give yourselves a pat in the back.

Thanks for putting up with my quirky way of telling a story. :)

Game on!

Yay! Thanks for the game. I think that's only the fourth PbP I've ever actually "finished" rather than it just petering out before the end. And Min is definitely the most successful wizard I've ever played. I had a great time! :D

Female half-orc Slayer/7

Thanks for all the fun everyone! There's something satisfying about the game 'fading to black' rather than not having closure.

Joana, it would have been great to have you play with us in Eberron but I totally understand.

And a big round of applause for our decent GM! Thanks, Fabian, this is the first game I've finished! And thanks for sticking with us, Joana, we'll miss you!

male

Alright, just so you know, I'm inactivating this campaign tomorrow...

Thanks again everyone!

Nsizi, Zelkja,: I guess I'm 'stuck' with you in some other games. :)

Min: I'll miss you; it was a pleasure. I'll be running a sci-fi game later in the year (Starfinder) so look me up if interested.

Game on!
