Obryn shows hints of a past life as a serial killer as he stashes Sure's body. After setting Sure in corner, in an attempt to make him appear to be sleeping off a good drunk, Obryn locks the door, and the party makes their way to House Carthagen. Anyone play the Bloodcove Disguise with this PC?
House Cartahegn is based in an imposing two-story trading post in the northeastern part of the city. The storefront bustles with citizens and merchants alike, most purchasing staple commodities such as sugar and rice. A busy clerk greets customers as they enter and provides helpful directions to any who ask.
Weaver, a Pathfinder |
Not with this PC. :/
Kn Local: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 Does Obyrn know who heads up House Carthagen these days?
Before talking with the clerk, Obyrn spends a good while milling about the crowds and standing in some of the longer lines. Claiming to pass the time, he engages in idle talk about Bloodcove gossip and tries, 'innocently,' to inquire into opinions about the Aspis and the trading houses. Not sure what kind of check you want for that.

Tess tries to help Obryn with his Knowledge collection by meeting and greeting in the area.

"SQUAWK!" says the giant bird following you around.
Someone can feel free to Handle Animal him during combat, otherwise he'll probably just stand around. It's a move action for the tricks that he knows iirc. (It would be a free action for Sure.)
Velidor Gamestalker |
Velidor pets the poor animal and gives him a treat.
Jaysin Deckert |
Jaysin looks at the bird with a cautious look, leaving its care to someone more capable of handling creatures of the wild.
Weaver, a Pathfinder |
"Hmmm, not much use asking around here."
Obyrn heads to the busy clerk, and gets quickly to the point: "Need to see Novaria."
Tessara Omelion PFS |
Tess stands by silently, waiting for their chance to meet with their contact. She hopes asking for him straight out was the right call.
Weaver, a Pathfinder |
Obyrn nods and reaches into a pouch by his side, surreptitiously drawing out five platinum pieces so that only the clerk can see, and lays them on the desk. Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20

The clerk sets her jaw and crosses her arms, leveling a stare at Obryn.
Eventually, someone mentions Aya, the clerk's features twitch slightly, and she requests that the party wait for a moment, and retreats into the building. When she emerges several minutes later, she bids you to follow her.
Following the clerk into a back office, you see another woman waiting for you. She receives you with a pleasant but detached demeanor. She gives each of you an appraising look before smiling in approval and saying, “Always a pleasure to work with your illustrious Society. The last time I dealt with your people, it led to a mutually beneficial arrangement that I have not forgotten. In fact, my current position at this trading house is a direct result of our last encounter. I sincerely hope that you come today with another such opportunity.”
Weaver, a Pathfinder |
Obyrn would have preferred to keep the word 'Society' out of it--there are ears everywhere--but that's too late now. Speaking softly, he answers plainly. "Indeed, I know some who spoke highly of that engagement. Today we come with a similar offer. We have need to move both goods and agents through this city, without the attention and interference of our rivals. We would like to contract House Carthagen as a principal partner in that business, to the mutual benefit of us both."
Tessara Omelion PFS |
Again, Tess lets Obryn do his negotiations without interfering. She does try to add a bit here and there to help, when she can find an opening.

Bluff too? Well, my Diplomacy isn't great (Obyrn is a thief, after all) but I'm not really lying, so let's make sure that I am.
Noting Novaria's expectant expression, Obyrn continues. "Additionally, we've gathered intelligence that suggests that our rivals are losing their hold over Bloodcove. As they slide from power, House Carthagen could make enormous profits filling the gap--with our help."
Bluff: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (4) + 20 = 24 yeesh, good thing I picked Bluff.
"So that leaves you a choice. Reject our offer and cling to a crumbling status-quo, or embrace a proven organization to further the interests of your own House on the winds of change. What say you?"
GM Tektite |
Novaria mulls over Obryn's words, then nods, muttering to herself. "You make many good points, but before we cement the deal, I ask a favor." She smiles, then continues. "Recently, a local pirate crew led by a thug named Ungala has been intercepting our trade barges and wagons and stealing our cargo. It is the gods' fortune that you came to see me today of all days, as we are preparing to move an exceptionally valuable shipment to Warehouse Row to be loaded onto a ship bound for the Inner Sea today. After our usual guards' failure to protect the last two shipments from Ungala's raiders, I've lost confidence in their abilities. But where they have failed, you might have a real chance. Up to this point, Ungala and her ruffians have always attacked while our supply carts were passing Free Trade Square, where they can strike in the narrow streets and disappear into crowds quickly. I have no doubt that they'll be planning such an attack for today's shipment, and I want you to be there and ready to intercept them."
Velidor Gamestalker |
'Now that is something I can help with' Velidor mutters to the others...
Tessara Omelion PFS |
Tess nods and eagerly accepts the mission. "We'd be happy to help with your shipment. We will prove our abilities and hopefully establish a beautiful relationship."
Weaver, a Pathfinder |
"First! Obyrn intercedes, "Let's draw up a quick contract, shall we?" He pulls out some parchment and a pen, muttering as he writes.
The representatives of the Decemvirate of the Pathfinder Society and the representative of House Carthagen of the City of Bloodcove, undersigned, agree this 3rd Day of Gozran, 4715 AR, to pursue a long-term mutual business arrangement in the City of Bloodcove, particularly with regard to the movement, trade, and protection of the assets of both parties.
As a measure of good faith, the undersigned representatives of the Decemvirate agree to assist House Carthagen in the protection of a particular shipment of goods from the unwanted interference of a particular Mr. Ungala.
In exchange, House Carthagen agrees to assist the Pathfinder Society in its operations within the City of Bloodcover, in particular by hindering or circumventing the interference of the Aspis Consortium and other parties.

Novoria raises her eyebrows, sighs, and reads over the contract. Reading it over a second time, while occasionally peering over the paper to look at Obryn, she sighs again and signs it. "Fine, here you go. Now you better hurry, the shipment is due to leave soon. Follow me."
Novoria introduces the party to the teamsters and you all make ready to head across town. Leaving House Carthagen, the tiny caravan winds through the northern half of the city while sticking to the sturdier streets, which are increasingly crowded as the procession approaches Free Trade Square.
Velidor and Obryn notice the crowd beginning to scatter ahead where someone has erected a rough barricade across the street!

At the first signs of conflict, the crowds rapidly disperse. Until the beginning of the second full round of combat, the street (not including the alleys and area south of the barricade) is considered difficult terrain and provides soft cover for all attacks against non-adjacent targets unless the attacker has high ground. By the second round, the streets are clear enough to facilitate combat without penalties. The Cartahegn teamsters apply the brakes and dive under the wagon soon after combat begins.
