"I do not hear a denial, Pastor. Perhaps you are as aghast that your like-kinned have sought so much death in your town. And you know nothing of it?" Solrisa still seems very grim. "You are supposed to protect your flock from creatures like this, are you not? If you are so worried about why they are here, then you'll no doubt go find out why they are here from your prayers? Do tell us what they say, Pastor."

A smile finally returns to Sol's face.

"I can come by tomorrow to find out what you have learned. After all, your kind serve ones like this. You should be able to find out who sent them."

Bald male Half-Elf elder

Eidi smiles wide as Solrisa seems pleased by the State arrangements "It was just nothing, really"

Suddenly realizing about the rest of the team, the elder expression changes to that of surprise "Are you all good?" and looks specially at the rests of blood on Ascaria's clothes "Have you been butchering your dinner?"

As Ascaria is raised up by Sol, he sputters in anger - but whether it’s being picked up so roughly, or the content of his missive it’s hard to say, ”Sol, you do your job and I’ll do mine. The fact that you too can do mine, and you did nothing to save the sheriff is why I had to act. My job is healing. And I will do my job, wherever it leads me. Want to protect me? Follow me or lead me, but do not tell me not to do my job. I’d sooner not breathe.”

Once set down again he calms quickly. Having said his peace, and knowing something about Sol’s ability to retain, well anything really, he doesn’t hold much hope.

When the clergy presses the party however, he grows unusually quiet, having a great fear of the priesthood. He worships illegally, and pays lip service to the required religion - and he knows it. So any confrontation could result in his imprisonment… let alone one as fraught as this.

He responds readily enough to Jamis though, when he queries, ”I believe these were the same as the dragon - sent by the same people. They mean no good sheriff, and we pursue them to their lair though they try to thwart us at every turn. Rest assured, we will not stay long - until our deed is done and peace is restored.”

He listens as Sol presses Hamanezer. He silently cheers her on, while keeping his best poker face staunchly planted on his visage.

Later…
”Eidi! It’s good to see you in good health. We were jumped by devils in the square. They sought the rod Eri carries.” he explains, further describing the battle and its outcome.

”We should stick together from now on. There’s no knowing what might happen now that they’re hunting us. They could attack at any time, and would likely love to weaken us further by carving us up one at a time. I fear, until we’ve completed our quest, we must be joined at the hip.”

”For now though, I am exhausted. Let us sleep, with watches, and in the morning let’s journey quickly to Egorian to buy and sell the gear we need, so we’re ready to make tracks to the north. I can turn us into clouds and we can fly along the currents making great speed.”

Jamis wrote:
"What kind of trouble are you in?"

Not here, now. Mortimer whispers back, eyeing Rastophan and shaking his head. "This square has too keen an ear."

Solrisa wrote:
"Maybe you had part in this, Asmodean," Solrisa says grimly, her sword still caked in the ichor of devil as it still burns with holy fire. "Your god is known to consort with devils like these...might it have been you who sent them upon us? Is it not your kind that willingly deals with devils like these? Tell me of your innocence in this attack that almost killed two of my friends, Pastor. Speak the truth for I always do."

Grasping at a longer spine, Mortimer looks down at the dead devil in his hand and holds the miniature sea mine well away from his own body. For such a small thing, it sure does have a lot of blood...

Mortimer holds his breath as he watches Hamaneezer make his way across the square.
Keep going... keep on going.. that's it -- nothing to see here --

Hamaneezer wrote:
Hamaneezer stops in his tracks, and turns on the maiden.

NO! Damnit!

Hamaneezer wrote:
"Are you accusing me of summoning devils to attack you? Choose your words very carefully, Solrisa, for they will be weighed not only here, but elsewhere, as well. By your already-uttered word, it sounds as if you've convened court, here and now. Surely you didn't mean it that way, did you?"
Solrisa wrote:
"I can come by tomorrow to find out what you have learned. After all, your kind serve ones like this. You should be able to find out who sent them."

Rather than addressing the Priest, Mortimer takes his chances and addresses Solrisa as he starts heading toward their new Estate.

"Naw, Sol. Hamaneezer can't have had anything to do with this. Those were really crooked Devils, you know? Devils with a twisted sense of loyalties. Not the sort of Devils Hamaneezer would er, ever uh -- consider consorting er -- summoning, uh, with -- at all ever. Not a respectable --" Mortimer coughs, almost choking on the word in the current context, "Priest of the Asmodean Church like Hamaneezer."

He coughs a bit more as he makes his way across the square, dead devil in extended tow.

"Oh, Eidi, look! This is perfect! I love it. We don't need to change a thing! Did you fix this all yourself? It's lovely!"

"Yah, uh ..." Mortimer says uncomfortably, looking around and scratching his head. "I like what you did with the space."

Ascaria wrote:
”We should stick together from now on."

Mortimer looks crestfallen. "But.I.Don't.Want.To.Sleep.Here." he grumbles, looking back past the square toward the Smithy.

"Oh, here," he says turning to Eidi, dropping the Devil on the floor in front of the fireplace. "We thought maybe you could make this thing tell us who sent it. Then maybe the hunters can become the hunted, and I won't have to sleep here."

He looks out the window, to see if they acquired any unwanted followers.

That is my very favorite drawing from that book. I’d always pause on that page. Also, that was surely Sol, slicing a swath through the deviled array.

Solrisa keeps her grim look at the Asmodean, her eyes fixed upon his evil aura.

”He has offered no denial yet. Let him speak true and then we’ll see. And let him aid us in telling us who sent the devils to hurt this town, then I will believe his innocence. If he claims to care about this town, it is the least he could do,” Solrisa offers a very rare disagreement with Mort.

Hamaneezer raises his hand at Mortimer, seeking to silence the second voice in this altercation. "You do not speak for me, Mortimer Blackhand." The priest of Asmodeus steps forward to address Solrisa.

"You seem to hear nothing but your own voice, Solrisa. When devils hunt, only the truly guilty need fear their judgment. My flock need fear nothing." Hamaneezer raises his hand towards Jamis, who raises his hand back to Hamaneezer. Jamis offers praise to Asmodeus for his life.

Hamaneezer turns back to Solrisa. "Tell me, woman. Who do you worship? I know you don't pray to Asmodeus, at least from your time in Diamond Lake." Hamaneezer turns a now cold eye on Ascaria. "I know several of you fail to pay respects to our Dark Prince, and I have been kind. That was before." Same cold eye now turns back to Solrisa.

"It is you who will do my bidding, woman. Tomorrow morning, you will submit your Vow of Contrition, by your hand if you know how to write, by one of your friends' if you don't. Failure to do so, and I will petition Egorian for your persecution myself."

Hamaneezer turns his back on the Square, no further words spoken, and returns to his Church.

Mortimer wrote:

"Gladly, Mortimer. You are a gentleman for offering." Marzena is still flush in the face from the recent battle, no easy words coming forward, as she takes the giant's arm, and makes her way from the Square to the Governor's Manor.

Mortimer:

After your conflicts in Memorial Square, one with devils, one with priest, you find no one so foolish as to follow you to your new Manor. At least for now.

The Outcasts' Estate warms within with the gathering, even as the barbed devil's corpse grows cold. With questions coming together, the gnome and half-elf consider how to interrogate the spirit of the devil.

I've got 4/7 questions, maybe 5/7. I'll post answers when I've got them all. Eri, you might have soaked another round of poison, for its six rounds of pleasantry, so we're all good. The gnome's got your back.

Earlier with the priest, Ascaria wonders just what the result will be when Sol doesn't bend. Probably a good thing we're leaving town. he thinks.

Later, with the group, Ascaria says, ”Wait a moment Sol. Before you try to claim the rod, let’s see what we can learn from this fellow.”

Ascaria takes his time, and casts Speak with Dead.

”Now then my dear devil. Welcome back to the life of the living, if only briefly. Now, this is for posterity, so do please be honest. I have a few questions to put to you.”

• Who sent you?
• Why did they want the rod of law?
• What is their next move?
• How did you know we had the rod of law?
• How did you know Eri carried the rod of law?
• Is Hamaneezer working for your organization?
• Is Governor Neff working for your organization?

At the end of the process, Ascaria smiles. He listens closely for the answers.

The morning comes, and with it, the promise of information from Allustan, regarding Manzorian, and what lies ahead. Allustan and Raziel both attend you at the Arkaner Estate, quite early. They enjoy your hinterlands hospitality until everyone has gathered. Raziel takes his leave to ferret out several rats which have taken up residence, leaving you to your conversation with the old wizard.

"I received word. He is willing to meet with you. Magepoint awaits, though he does not demand you travel there immediately, as he himself has his responsibilities. He will know when you arrive, and should join you shortly thereafter. I think you will enjoy a change of scenery. Magepoint is quite lovely, this time of year."

"Bring your devils with you when you come for me, Pastor. My blade will end them and then I will come for you. It will be fun," Solrisa seems to really enjoy the idea. "For now, you may go."

Solrisa lets the man retreat with a smile, sliding her long sword back into her sheath after a quick cleaning.

Solrisa listens to the devil's answers and is not surprised that Hamaneezer is not involved: she believed the man when he said he had no involvement.

Mortimer carefully hands the dead barbed devil by the longest spine to Eri. "Take this -- hold it away from you -- these things are annoyingly thorny." He allows Marzena to take his arm, and leaves the Square with her.

GMSass:

Mortimer glances back at the Square as he and Marzena leave, concerned about the tension between Solrisa and the Asmodean Priest. I hope that doesn't escalate. That's not a fight we need to pick right now.

He catches pace with Marzena. "I'm very sorry about that -- back there. I really had not expected something like that to happen ... just now... here. But I guess... because ... there are the rod fragments. Allustan said the smaller ones seek out the larger ones. Or one... We're now a target, and for that reason, we'll have to leave town. Sooner than later."

Maybe this plane itself, even.

He quickens his pace a little, but not so much to overwhelm Marzena.

"Impress upon the governor and the sheriff," he pleads "that the town might not be safe -- even in the event we leave. As you know, we will be leaving soon anyway. I hope that draws the chaos away from Diamond Lake onto us, but those Devils... really seem to hold grudges." Jerks.

He thinks about the Periapt of health given to them by Ilya Starmane. "... we will be able to locate you as long as you hold onto the periapt. My uncle helped create it, so will be able to locate it."

"I just wish, if something untoward were to happen to Diamond Lake, that we could know about it to come back right away to protect the town."

He sees her to the door of the Manor, then makes his way back out of the drive to the main road. He looks longingly toward the direction of the Smithy, but dutifully and reluctanly heads back to the Arkaner estate to see what his companions can make out of a dead Devil.

The conversation continues, when you reach the outer wall of the Governor's Manor. It is here that Marzena is allowed to pass, and Mortimer is denied entry. Governor's orders, apparently.

Marzena gives her thanks for her safety, and wishes you a good evening. She shoots an evil side glance at the guard, who visibly flinches as she passes.

Manzorian has fostered quite a little hub of commerce, over the years. Westcrown is certainly a fine consideration. Both are port cities."

”Sol, I agree Eri should give it up. Like when the seal of law kept summoning creatures to attack me - whoever holds the rod is going to be a target. However, I’d like Mort to carry it if we’re all agreeable.” he looks to Mort, ”It makes you a target sure, but I want it in the hands of someone who cannot utilize healing magic, as the rod lets you cast Heal once a day. Might be useful in a pinch.”

Once the rod is dealt with, he continues nodding at Mort’s suggestion, ”I’m totally fine skipping Egorian. We’re too well known there anyway, and some of the law there already doesn’t like us. Best to steer clear. We’re passing by Magepoint, so let’s go to Magepoint. If it’s large enough to handle the sorts of things we’re selling and buying, I’m all for it!”

He’s excited to get on the road… or rather in the air!

Detect scrying will at least let us know when to shut up and not plan. Nondetection is great, but I don't want to burn a whole level's worth of spells on this. Ascaria might not even be right!

Eidi listens carefully at the fray explanation and accepts with joy the shows of gratitude on the sate of the State.

The half-elf lets the interrogation proceed as well and then goes to sleep while thinking on the cryptic answers of the devil.

If they are using it to find us, that might be enough" he ponders about the idea for a second "It takes me an extra effort to prepare arcane abjurations, but I think I can manage it if it is just one"

The next morning, Part II

Mortimer awakens to the smells of tea, kahve, hickory smoked bacon, fresh steamed eggs, jam, toast, roasted potatoes, cornbread, turkey, ham, pickles, cucumbers, blackberries, strawberries, peaches, lingonberries, apples, roasted squash, tomatoes, mackerel, cabbage, turnips and carrots, and spiced spinach. Is that cheese, too?! Whoa! Wow. His stomach roars. I'm REALLY hungry!

He groggily rolls off of the hearth and swaggers toward the breakfast table.
"Thanks Ascaria!" He helps himself to sizeable portions of everything offered, a grand grin upon his face.
The ' Gar will never be able to out-do this!!!

Is there any way to block such things from happening? Or at least know when it's happening? There's nothing I can do besides worry," he shrugs."I suggest, given how hot we are right now, that we travel to Egorian with all due haste."

Mortimer chokes down part of a turkey leg. "Can we just skip Egorian...?"

Mortimer pauses in his morning feeding frenzy to frown as Raziel ferrets out a rat, who -- on a counter in its mortally startled state knocks an already broken pile of pottery to the patio in a chacaophony of clay. As the scene passes, Mortimer passively yet purposefully starts in on the lingonberries.

Where's the passion fruit? He looks at Ascaria, with a mouthful of berries. "Do you know passion fruit?" he asks, casually.

Mortimer mindlessly digs into the cornbread, over which he glugs more than ample amounts of honey.

Eri wrote:

Mortimer looks up, startled out of his introspective intake of digestive khave. Huh? "Uh," he says, taking the Rod. He looks upon his Mule Cord clad shoulders, laden with many many many items picked up over time. I'm already like a cargo ship. Do I have to carry THIS too? He shrugs and places the Rod carefully into the Haversack. The sooner I can unload some of this stuff, the happier I'll be.

"Can we just please make the nearest stop Westcrown?" he asks politely, sipping the khave.

For some reason this post led Mort to believe Westcrown was between Diamond Lake and Magepoint, which would be the only reason he'd want to make that the pit stop to unload his cords. If that is not in fact the case, Mort is more than happy to head straight North to Magepoint.

Even if it is, if everyone would rather skip Westcrown and go straight to Magepoint, he's easily persuaded once his appetite is mostly sated.

"Allustan, can you please make it possible for us to do a Sending Message to Ilya Starmane of Barrowood? We saved her in Sodden Hold. The shapeshifters were very cruel to her. I wanted to check up with her -- make sure everything is O.K."

Ascaria quips, "No need for delay, I have a couple scrolls of that for just such an occasion and would be fine using one now - that is if Eidi doesn't already have one in memory?" He looks to their magical jack-of-all-trades, wondering what he's got in his bag of tricks.

While he waits for a response, he suggests, "A sending only works for up to 25 words. Mort, what would you like to say?"

"Hey, is Barrowood on the way to Westcrown or Magepoint? Maybe we could make a stop and see her in person! If it's not too far out of the way, it won't take long. Remember we'll be moving quite fast."

Ascaria does not have a map, nor a good sense of direction considering how far he can see. That said, looking at a map, Westcrown is south, but Barrowood is NW and directly along our route. We should ping the fair maiden and stop for a visit if she's available.

Mortimer's eyes grow wide at this suggestion.

"WHAT??!! Oh -- that's right -- you weren't there! That wouldn't be appropriate! The Shapeshifters threw her into a dungeon in Sodden Hold, and kidnapped someone very dear to her. They made her watch while they killed him! Then they masqueraded around as him, just to torture her!!! THEY WERE TERRIBLE!"

"So -- maybe we can use abbreviations, squeeze more in? How about:

'Hi Ilya. Hoping to see u well. Will be passing thru Barrowood on our way beyond shortly. How can we find u? Artists and Outcasts.'

Ascaria, feeling that the change isn't needed but eager to get going, assents to Mort's changes. "Sure thing Mort, that's fine. I like those words." he nods several times quickly, willing Eidi's study to commence more quickly...

"Oh, right, Eidi, you don't know Ilya, so you can't cast the sending. I'll have to use a scroll. No worries, I have it right here!"

He pulls out the scroll and casts, listening for her response which he immediately recites for the others.

"Damn, she couldn't tell us a place to meet!? Now we've got to spend another scroll just to tell her Magepoint?"

Mort Dreams, II:

She runs up to greet him.

"Oh! That suits you," she says, tugging on his sleeve cuff.

He looks down at his attire. Fancy. "But where... ?"

"Go!" she shouts, playfully. "Go show him how it's done!" she says, 'shooing' him up the crowded stairs.

Run he does, upwards, until the stairs turn to a solid plane of diamond. The scenery becomes more and more foggy, and eventually he realizes it's his breath freezing in the air.

I feel somewhat buoyant.

Suddenly, he sees his own shadow barreling toward him full speed! All but completely unable to react, he instinctively folds and twists his body to the side to avoid the oncoming Juggernaut.

Upon a cushion of fog, he watches as his older brother skids past him on the ice, and into the arena wall, which then collapses upon his inert body.

Mortimer, horrified by his brother's defeat, runs as fast as he can toward the exit at the opposite side of the arena.

Must we always compete this way?!

Huh?

Mortimer shakes his head, then looks curiously at Ascaria with a raised eyebrow.

When the party is ready to depart, he says his goodbyes, and excitedly casts Wind Walk. He immediately begins changing, and leaps clumsily into the air, flying high above the town and spinning around, becoming lost in the clouds and, eventually, finding his way back down.

Man, what should I choose? Well, something that does not rely on fire would be a good start. Oooh, this sounds good. Parchment Swarm A nice combination dish. I’ll need to get some scroll sheaths. Is that a thing?

I miss using my bow. I finally figured out how to shoot with two arrows. There might be a time when that’s just what we need. Ugh, I’m too much of two and not enough of one. Maybe I can refocus on spells from here on? Do I really want to do that? Gah! I have no idea.

Hmm. I should learn how to fold paper into creatures. I don’t think it’ll change the spell, but it will be cool. I need some paper.

Several minutes later, and the poison finds its mark, and Mortimer slumps into a brief sleep. He is awoken moments later by another tail flick to the side of his neck. Allustan looks pleased with Ascaria's demonstration, while Raziel takes turns darting through each of you, to test the substance of the cloud. They wave their goodbyes in return, and the party begins their ascent into the cloudy mid-morning of the day.

Within 200 miles, flying northwest, you reach Kintargo, the Silver City of Cheliax. Situated in Nisroch Bay, at the mouth of the Yolubilis River, its colors look far more radiant than those of Egorian. A low fog has currently settled over parts of the city, but Castle Kintargo is quite majestic as it rises through the mists.

Ahead of you lies the Arcadian Ocean. Out there, across the waters lies the grand city of Magnimar, as well as Windsong Abbey, and your destination, Magepoint, further northeast from there. The travel across the waters should be another 200 miles, give or take.

How do you proceed? Across the ocean, as the sky rat flies? Along the coast in a more scenic fashion?

Eidi smiles as Ascaria starts flying up in the sky. He pats the ground with his staff and suddenly starts spinning into the air becoming one with the wind as well.

When Mortimer practices combat maneuvers, he practices the things he isn't so good at, like disarming and tripping and makes only gentle contact if any at all. It is after all practice, and he figures Raziel is the most agile of the lot of them to practice such maneuvers with, and furthermore, he needs to practice tripping against a foe with more than two legs (even if that foe can just jump/hover/fly over his sweeps) just to see how the mechanics could work. No pseudodragons are ever harmed in the making of the Brawler Mort.

When he awakens to the pseudodragon's words:

Raziel wrote:
"Wouldn't you rather chase chickens around a yard, Mortimer? If you're only trying to practice grabbing, we could find you a pig, and one of your friends could grease it up, I imagine."

he replies,

"Oh, I've done that. Pigs get really nervous though, and it doesn't matter how gently you handle them. They eat a lot, and I'm here to tell you what goes in comes right out the other end." He thinks for a moment, realizing again that he'd just been napping. "Hey! What was that you just did? Was it hard? Can you do it again? Maybe I can develop an immunity..."

”Yes, yes, along the coast. I too am interested in the Abbey Eidi, but maybe after we’ve had a chance to investigate the town. This is a foreign land, with foreign practices. I don’t want to be locked out of the city because it’s too close to curfew, or run afoul of some other obscure law to us. The Abbey is very close to the town - we can just pop over once we get the lay of the land.”

”And yes, definitely along the coast. I’d hate to drift off course and end up in the open ocean as the spell begins to fade. Might mean we camp somewhere in the brush tonight as the coastal path will be longer - unless there are any cities on the way you want to stop in on our way?”

Ascaria is content to press on until the day’s travel is done, then make a comfortable camp somewhere in the Varisian wilderness.

But he revels in the flight. Even as the minutes turn to hours, and all he can see is the party and blue sky all around him - he feels the speed, the wind, the occasional cloud rushing by on business of its own. He loves to fly.

”Yeh, maybe a reversible thing so we can quickly change so that we don’t stand out overmuch once we land. Or maybe white can be our uniform. A way to spread fear to those who might otherwise hassle us.”

"Hey, has anyone heard of a scroll case you can wear on your belt that will protect the scrolls from rain and whatnot?"

Solrisa claps her hands with glee.

"I *love* flying! I love it!" She squees, nearly clicking her heels together and taking off with her pretty shoes. "Flying is so much fun! We should fly to the north! Oh!"

"Oh, I'm very good at flying! I've very very good. But not as good as I am at protecting, but very good." Fear her mighty 5 ranks of Fly!

Within 200 miles, flying northwest, you reach Kintargo, the Silver City of Cheliax.

Solrisa changes along with Ascaria and immediate begins to fly 'north', which, of course is actually southwest to the confused Sol. Eventually, she gets turned the right direction to the best direction, which is, of course, north.
