DMRaven's The Long Vigil (Inactive)

Game Master DMRaven

The warriors of Vigil have been a beacon for good since the Shining Crusade. Standing against the orc hordes of Belkzen, undead swarms from Gallowspire and the demonic armies of the Worldwound, they are never short of threats to face and always in need of bodies for the fray. The elite Knights of Ozem look for only the most promising of Lastwall's recruits to take into their halls. Do you have what it takes?

It's a shame about Alacarty, but Zohruk had a fairly decent plan for how to trap him in a lie. This just saves him the trouble of having to break the old man's thumbs. :)

Ah, Basil. I can't help but like him, although I'm sure we'll never be friends at this rate.

Godmother Death:
A long time ago, a poor man was given a daughter by his wife, upheld in arms as a stick-thin child. He beheld the girl and declared he must find sponsor for her health and so sought it in the village. First, the man went to the baker and exclaimed: “Baker, your bread is so good and your dough so sweet. Would you sponsor my boy?” The baker took one look at the stick-thin girl and shook his head sadly. ”No baker would she make, as poor in health as her father's wealth. Look at how skinny she be.” And so the father left.

Second, the father went to the cobbler and exclaimed: “Cobbler, your shoes are so fine and your leather so supple. Would you sponsor my daughter?” The cobbler looked at the girl and lifted her feet, tickling the tiny baby toes before shaking his head. ”No cobbler would she make, as poor in health as her father's wealth. Look at how frail of bones she be.” And so the father left.

Frustrated with his lack of help from the townspeople, the father went to one last source. Finally, he went to the mayor and exclaimed: “Mayor, your leadership is so just and your rules well liked. Would you sponsor my daughter?” The mayor took a long, long look at the girl. He took the girl aside and spoke to the baby, listening to the baby sounds it made. Finally, he shook his head sadly. ”No mayor would she make, as poor in health as her father's wealth. Look at how crooked of teeth she be.” And so the father left.

Despondent, he wailed on his way home, collapsing by the side of the road. ”No sponsor you have, poor as your father you be and will be. Will my child perish so quickly lacking tooth and food?” And yet, someone listened. A woman of wealth stepped from a black carriage with black horses and a black-hooded servant. ”No baker would she make. No cobbler, no mayor. I will sponsor your child.” Making no excuse, she took her new godchild promptly to temple. But not to the temple of Abadar nor Erastil nor Desna. The woman took him to a small place, the laying of bones, a graveyard hall. The place of Pharasma and Mother of Souls.

And so anointed, the father was led to the woman's home there and deep under still. Staircases upon staircases, darker and deeper, they moved for what seemed an eternity until faced with the halls of the Boneyard itself. Pharasma, Death, the godmother she, conducted him to her great vault. There tapers were burning of three sizes, small, large, and middle-sized' and those which were not yet alight were very large. The godmother said to the godchild's father: “Look, here I have the duration of everybody's life.” The child's father gazed there at, realizing who she was with wide eyes.

Spying a taper very close to the ground, he exclaimed to her: “Lady of Graves, I pray you, whose is this litter taper close to the ground?”[/b]

And so she said to him in so calm a way. ”Why, that is yours. When any taper whatsoever burns down, I must go for that man.”

He said to her. ”Lady of Graves, I pray you, give me somewhat additional.”

Shaking her head, Death exclaimed:”I cannot do that!” Afterwards, she went and lit a bright new taper, large and thick for her new godchild whom they had just anointed. Meanwhile, while the godmother was not looking, the child's father took for himself a large new taper, lit it, and placed it where his tiny taper was burning down.

Turning around, the godmother looked round at him and said: ”You ought not have done that to me; but if you have given yourself additional lifetime, you have done so and possess it. You are so poor that no one but myself would be at your service, you shall bear me in memory! I will help you with this. You shall go to the houses of respectable men whom are ill and you shall physic and cure them. I possess all life and know whom will be healed and whom will be dead. When I stand at anyone's feet, you can be of assistance to every such person; but if I stand at anybody's head, don't attempt to aid him.

And so it came to pass. The child's father went from patient to patient and benefited every one. He became distinguished as a physician. One day a Shoanti chief was dying and called for the child's father. The father went willingly, wanting to help such a great man. For that man was known through Varisia as a kind and peaceful, leading his people to benefit with the towns around them. The chief was very sick and nothing the child's father did seemed to help much. He realized the problem when he saw Pharasma's shadow standing hear the head of the man's bed, shaking its head sorrowfully at him. When he saw the shadow, he recalled what the Lady of Graves had said to him. ”...but if I stand at anybody's head, don't attempt to aid him.” Despite this advice coming from the lips of the Goddess of Death herself, the man's father knew his daughter would be well-off if he could save the chieftain. For the chieftain was very, very rich.

And so the father ordered the slaves to turn the bed around. ”Turn the chieftain's bed around. Like so, and have his head facing me this way.” The slaves obeyed, to the chieftain's wife's consternation. And so it was that the chief came to recover from his illness. The child's father thought himself very clever and went home to his wife and his young son.

”You must not do that anymore.” stated the Lady of Graves, standing in a shadow on the wall. ”For I shall have to take him whither he is due, none the less. Once you play a trick on me and I let it go. Twice now you have scorned my help with trickery and twice no more.” And so, with those words, the Lady of Graves stepped forward and gathered up her godchild in her arms. The wife, not seeing her, cried out as it seemed shadows themselves took her child from her. She sobbed and cried and begged her husband to get her back. The husband took himself quickly to the chapel of long ago, now naught but stone and rubble despite it having seemed glorious not so long ago. He went down chipped steps to where the Boneyard lay and called out to Pharasma.

”Lady of Graves, Godmother of my child. Please, bring back my child, bring me to her. I give my life in exchange.” With his words, Pharasma appeared but she did not look pleased. ”Do you not recall thy tricks now?” She spoke no more but gestured and a vision appeared of a long, tapered candle burning slowly downward. Beside this candle sat another, burnt out and flat to the ground. For it was the second candle the man had set for himself and it had quite a length left to burn. She shook her head and turned, the man crying out behind her.

”But where will my child go? What will you do with her?” She turned, opening her robe to show her godchild. The girl was small and petite but her eyes burned bright. ”My herald she will be.” And with those words, vanished did she and the Boneyard about her leaving childless father amidst strewn ruins and graves.

Returning home, the man told his wife. So struck with grief she that she quickly passed away. The man wished himself done and went to the lake, thinking to sink himself deep in its embrace. And yet, his candle still burned and rescued was he by a kind fisher. Twice did he try to so lose his life, throwing himself in the maws of a manticore. And yet the old beasts teeth broke and its claws were dulled enough so that a wandering adventurer came to the father's aid. Bereft of his wife, bereft of his child, the clever man suffered to live out a long, long life.

Cheat not Death, She always gets her due.

The cohorts are full of some...interesting people. Many can be swayed this way and that depending on PC and NPC actions. Causing Daen trouble seems to be a pointless hobby of Leo.

Seeing Allie's post got me to thinking, has the Trial been mentioned to Zohruk by anyone at all? Heck, I as the player don't know anything more than "it's a thing that will happen at some point in the future".

I...don't actually know! I assume it would have happened off screen.

This is what Fisk had to say on it:
" No matter how long you have been here—you must go through the Trial. It is your last chance to gain rank and avoid being scrubbed out. Upon completion of the trial, if you pass you will go up one rank. If you fail, you will fall one rank. If you fail and someone under you is advancing, you will fall two ranks. Upon completion of the trial, the last two ranks will be removed from the Bonewatch.”

”The first trial is the Trial of the Rose. You must recover a single rose from a carefully arranged field. You will need all your skills in this trial. Expect to face multiple threats including monsters, your fellow scrubs and the very terrain around you. Prepare well and you may succeed. Completing the trial quicker will earn your cohort more points as well.”

OOC:

The trial is a monthly event that each cohort goes through. At the end of which, everyone who completes a specific goal goes up in rank by 1 point if they are in rank 1-9 or 2 points if in rank 10-20. Everyone who did not complete the goal, goes down in rank by 2 points. Of course this is limited by not going higher than 1 and lower than 20. Finally, after the trial ranks 19 and 20 are purged and removed from the cohort. They are kicked out of the Bonewatch.

During trial 2, ranks 18 and 17 are kicked out. Trial 3, ranks 15/16. Trial 4, ranks 13/14 and trial 5 removes ranks 11/12.

One last question on this point: in addition to the aforementioned description, is it a fair assumption that before the trial, Zohruk might have an opportunity to examine (and I am very specifically thinking "smell") a rose? I wouldn't expect they're native plants to Belkzen.

In trying to quickly make a few tokens for each of the cohort members, I found it far, far to difficult to find either: 1) a picture with a blonde guy in glasses who isn't anime-pretty or 2) a fat guy. So Bryson is going to be represented by a dragon. Because f*@$ it.

You can use it for the trial.

Allie, Grimold originally ran into Theodric the previous Starday, near the top of page 20, when he visited Dazen's tower to get some info on the beasts for the Trial.

GM, do we have an in-game date? I know we have days of the week, was just wondering if we were tracking the actual calendar and various religious/national holidays. If we're not using one currently but you'd like to, this is the best one I've found so far.

I did, but had found it too difficult. This calendar is pretty awesome! I'm trying to remember/locate where I put the actual dates down. I had them at some point..

Well, disregarding that and running with the fact Day of the Inheritor (an actual 3 day holiday in Lastwall) is on Rova 19, the first day of classes would have been 26 Arodus, 4713. Since I don't think I set a year previously, that sounds fine.

I'll work on putting that calendar into google docs later..may be easier to keep track of what days everyone did what as well.

And if it proves to be too time-consuming, we'll drop it again.

Okay, so I've gone back through and skimmed the thread to refresh my memory of what happened on which days. I believe that 25 Arodus was the day you meant to set as the first day, being Moonday. Thus, the date of the current Oathday would be Rova 18, meaning the next day, Fireday, would be Rova 19, the Day of the Inheritor.

Here's the very brief, not nearly comprehensive summary that I've put together lining up in-game day with the date and a brief description of notable events that happened on certain days.

And just for the heck of it, a quick look at post count thus far:

Urias: 35 + at least 1 as DM Jelani
Eckart: 81
Zohruk: 81 / 87 including posts as Redblade8
Grimold: 121
Daen: 490 / 223 in this campaign
Kassara: 233
Eilidh: 254
DMRaven: 728 + whatever you might have posted with other aliases

I've also discovered that Daen plays Daen in Allie's Kingmaker game.

That is a little crazy dude, but cool nonetheless.

I had no idea that I've posted more as Daen over on the other campaign than I have here. That's weird to me. Maybe it seems that the other campaign runs a little faster? Anyway, I got asked to join Ellidh's campaign by invitation when DM Raven took his month hiatus. To his credit, unlike just about every other DM I've had who took a hiatus, he actually came back when he was done. So now I'm doing both. They are a little different actually.

The Daen in this campaign is sixteen, as per the rules. The original Daen I had made for a kingmaker campaign is three years older, which is a little funny when it comes to how they act and even what their focus is. The older Daen is a bit of a better swordsman, as I changed his build a little, giving him an 18 dex to start and gave him the Kensai Archetype. The older Daen also is a little bit more mature in his thinking, and now has a girlfriend, which is a touch weird, since I'd not really seen him as the romantic type. It just kind of happened, and it has been fun.

They are a little hard to keep straight, but overall, it's been a fun experience.

That's awesome! Thank you for that Grimold. I work a late night today so am still working on the calendar. It'll be useful to have something like that to use once/if anyone decides to start investing money into the quirky downtime rules to build a business or teams or whatever.

The faster posting rate in the other game may be due to the higher number of combats? Not sure. I'm hoping to move us to the Trial so we can deal what that mess. Between siege engines, ropes, balance beams, terrain hazards, monsters, combating NPC's, vision rules, disease and falling it should be..interesting.

Hey, I'm not complaining about the posting rate, just so you know. I like this campaign a lot. All the rest of my campaigns have slowed immensely, gone on hiatus or stopped, and you do keep things moving with at least one post a day, and I really appreciate that. Even during your training periods you post, and that takes dedication. I'm glad to be a part of what's going on, and although you're looking forward to the trial, I know I'm enjoying everything going on so far.

Of course, "interesting" will be something we'll have to enjoy when it comes.

Daen will be interested in building a business. He just lacks capital, and is a bit preoccupied with staying number one right now.

With the addition of a calendar, tracking things like holidays and festivals becomes much easier. There are actually quite a few of them coming up, it seems. The Day of the Inheritor and Iomedae's Ascendance Day are coming up, as is the Sophronia Steeplechase. On top of that, the autumnal equinox is Desna's Swallowtail Festival. I haven't found anything to pin down the dates of Golarion's solar events, but on Earth the autumnal equinox is always on September 22, 23, or 24, coinciding with Rova 22, 23, or 24.

I just reviewed the Downtime system. It's not a terrible system, though it's a little complex. The main issue I see with implementing it in the game is that Capital is priced out of our range at this point.

Also, I just noticed that Alacarty has the same surname as the author of Grimold's copy of The Cloud Castle of the Storm King. Intentional?

Technically we've been playing with the downtime rules. There just hasn't been anyone with a trait that enhances it or had a background in it yet. Once I start throwing excessive amounts of gold at you it'll change up a bit. Without using standard magic item rules there's less fear of anyone using items to get incredibly high bonuses if you are well above WBL.

Now if you can only find the handful of treasure piles sitting around ready to be claimed.

Random trivia time. Can't really post from work since I lack my notes so...you get this.

The Scorpion is based off the Proprietor in Brian McClellans powder mage trilogy.

Burrichs personality is loosely based off of the same names character in Robin Hobbs Assassin's apprentice series.

Satos archery style draws from Japanese Kyudo. She does also teach European style crossbow use, yabasume, gungsol, Mongolian horse archery, English style longbow and eastern European styles.

Baird teaches Italian traditional fencing. Mivoni swordlords use the French style. Many of the books Baird references are actual fencing instruction books.

This game occurs after Kingmaker. The revolution that led to Baird fleeing Brevoy was part of those events.

Iobarians are Irish Celts. Kellids are more like the Germanic tribes.

I've already foreshadowed the second arc of the game. If we ever get to it.

Vigils walls are based off of Conatantinoples architecture.

Reading about Bottger's class spurred a memory of my housemates my junior year of college. One of the guys was working in the Materials Science lab, and began making explosive for "home entertainment".

A fairly typical anecdote would have me and a third housemate in the living room playing Nintendo, when suddenly behind the house there was an explosion, and what sounded like a shower of gravel hitting the back window. Bull would come inside, and in his Cuban accent tell us, "Yo, guys, I just blew up a cinderblock."

Oh, thanks, Bull, I was having trouble piecing that together...

I wish I could say that from there it did not devolve into a live-action Wile E. Coyote scenario, but well, that would be a lie. :-)

(Everyone involved survived with all body parts and without a police record, I'll say that much.)

Zohruk has no immediate plans to follow in Bull's footsteps. :)

I ran a 13th age version of Kingmaker partially online then finished up books 1-3 with some friends. There were many, many drastic changes to it including having the Rogarvia family disappearance occur only a few months before the start rather than years ago and strongly tying the game to the Restov desire for restoration of Rostland. A huge rebellion started calling upon the nation that Kingmaker hard formed as an ally. Unfortunately, the fey-events in that area occurred simultaneously and split that nation's attentions away thus leaving Rostland by itself. The rebellion failed miserably and never really moved past Issia's southernmost border. Mivon, Galt, Touvette and Numeria got involved as well at various points as allies, mercenaries, enemies or simply other adventure arcs. Unfortunately, we never finished it all but I thought having that rebellion in the past would be fun to throw around in this game.

Several other adventure paths may show up at certain times as well such as the pirate vs Cheliax events in Skull & Shackles and Wrath of the Righteous.

The antics eventually stopped when I answered the door one day and told Baltimore's finest, why no, I haven't seen two guys matching Bull and JC's description, but I'll keep an eye out.

Knowledge local dc17 or Daen:
The Rostland Revolution of 4711

About six years ago, in 4709, the ruling house House Rogarvia mysteriously vanished. Each and every one of them disappeared without a single trace. This led to a huge political upheaval as the various houses began to jockey for position and figure out who should be the new king. Nikolai Surtova, of House Surtova, claimed himself as regent without dispute. However, he could not crown himself king without a vote from the remaining noble houses. He needed at least four of the houses to vote in his favor to become the new ruling house without a civil war. Surtova had their own vote and the votes of House Lodovka and House Lebeda. The political issue was whether they could get House Garess to vote in their favor since House Medvyed and House Orlovsky were strongly opposed—choosing instead to favor expeditions to discover the purpose of the disappearances.

Meanwhile, Restov, home of the Council of Swordlords, took advantage of the political problems to pursue a unique method of gaining allies—by creating them. They fostered four groups of adventurers to explore and form their own small cities and kingdoms in the wilderness to the south. They hoped these kingdoms would be successful and could provide allies for a possible rebellion in the future.

Three of the bands failed while the fourth succeeded and formed the city of Ranino. The city, while small, conquered nearby Pitax and forced Mivon into a truce. For three years the nation grew.

Meanwhile, the political situation in Brevoy grew ever worse. Surtova gained the vote of House Garess in the year 4710. Simultaneously, a band of adventurers from Ranino discovered the cause for the Rogarvia disappearances. The reason is shrouded in mystery, but the common rumor was this: Choral the Conquerer created an agreement with several red dragons. As part of that agreement, they would be given a blood boon a hundred years hence. Choral cared not about something that would happen well after his death and his descendants suffered for it. While the adventurers defeated the red dragons and their minions under the Skywatch and in the mines of House Garess, only a handful of members survived.

Houses Orlovsky and Medyved used this to challenge the Surtova claim, arguing they had an heir to the throne in a distant cousin who had survived. They promised Restov independence in exchange for the Council's assistance in ousting the Surtova's from their throne and the swordlords agreed. They called upon their new allies in Ranino as well as portions of Galt who, always eager for ousting nobility, were happy to send forth soldiers.

Unfortunately, problems at home called back the Raninan troops. This, combined with a successful assassination, took the legs of the rebellion out from under it. Orlovsky and Medyved no longer had an argument for their revolution and they declared peace. Restov fought several hopeless battles. The result was the Lord Mayor being replaced and his role became stronger. The council of Swordlords was disbanded with many members being exiled. Baird was on the Council and, as one of the primary firebrands, had his lands removed from him as well as suffering exile.

Most of the swordlords lost their lands, with only a few holding on to much diminished territory. Many moved to Ranino where some rumor they continue to plot and that there are other members of House Rogarvia still alive.

This information is all fairly well known and Daen, as a Surtova, even a bastard, would know all of it.

NG Female Human Inquisitor 5 | HP 45/45 | AC 18, T 14, FF 14 | F 6, R 6, W 7 | Init +6 | Per +10

Choosing Weapon Finesse, Elven Accuracy (assuming you're ignoring the racial thing [if you're not, I'll take Two-Weapon Fighting]). For my EWP, I'll take it in Sawtooth Sabres.

Can I use my downtimes to retrain? If so, I'll start doing that, I think. I've got one feat (rapid reload) I'd like to trade out.

Female Human Swashbuckler 5 | AC: 20 [T: 16 FF: 15] | HP: 60/60 | F+3, R+8, W+1 | Init: +9 | Perc: +7 | Panache: 5/5)

To what extent do prerequisites apply? Several of the feats have BAB +4 as a prerequisite.... Thanks!

Also, Know (local): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

:)

*EDIT* Also,... Any chance that, instead of a feat listed I could get slashing grace? It opens up a single slashing weapon (e.g. Duelling Sword) to use for my Swashbuckler abilities.

Any chance Blade Binding could work with a mandela in addition to the khopesh & temple sword? If the talked-about stats have to change to balance it out, Gorum knows I'm willing to discuss... :)

Ignore prerequisites 100%.

Downtime may be used for re-training. Re-training does cost the normal time and cost. However, cost can be off-set if an appropriate NPC/Knight is used for the training.

Blade binding works with any weapon, it simply stacks with the bonus provided by those two weapons already.

For the sake of..sharing a little bit of information to save later heartbreak--Kassara is going to be getting EWP: Aldori Dueling sword as a result of taking Baird's class at the end of the month (i.e. end of the trial) You may take Slashing grace but won't be able to make good use of it until you have the proficiency.

Including feat prerequisites? i.e. Weapon Focus to get Slashing Grace?

If I take the open 9-spot, do I also make a challenge?

Yes. All the feats (so far and for the weeks in the future I've established) grant bonus feats without care to prerequisites. In a lot of cases this means the ability to get a feat several (sometimes many) levels earlier. However, none of the feats getting handed out are all that game-changing. I do reserve the right to change something/remove something should it become "too good." I choose to reserve the right to define "too good" in a hazy, nondescript way that is based purely on gut-feeling of in-combat efficiency based on the difficulty of fights.

...Hopefully that makes some sense <.<. Essentially, I want to hand out things to do lots of things without really mucking up game balance too much.

@Zohruk: No, Fisk is letting you either challenge someone or take a spot for free without a fight. Mind, he let Grimold do both..but he's a bit racist.

What do we think, guys? Slotting right into the 9-spot seems tempting, but I also had an urge to take a crack at Austyn...

Depends what position you end up in if you lose the challenge? If you end up 1 step below whoever you challenge then going against Daen would get you second spot even for a loss.

I don't like the way the dronok Austyn's been looking at me, and I've got no pressing need to take a shot at the title bout yet. :)

EDIT: so, what is the outcome if I challenge and lose?
