I would say that we will get there possibly with a team or two but we are pretty fresh at this and barely made it through the first one without a casualty.

Kheled is still finding his feet and his confidence and is likely to feel more confident in approaching other groups when he grows in power a little more or after we have been more successful.

I get the feeling we are one of the least experienced groups, but I might be reading too much into it.

Well, one of the groups seems to be missing a few members, and the Dog Soldiers lost some dogs, so we're not doing too bad.

Finally got some time to catch up. Let me squeeze a post in please :)

As for gathering information, i'm utterly disappointed with the result of my 29. Haven't followed up on it with RP yet though, I know; going to follow up now and maybe i'll be pleasantly surprised.

I am expecting RP to coincide with it but if your running a system where the RP takes precedence over the dice roll and skill modifiers behind it, how about we do away with the social skills and i'll invest my skill points into somewhere more useful? :)

Posting up now and apologies once again for the delay. New staff member starting in 9 days which will relieve me somewhat.

Three things to note here. First, like yourself, I reserve the right to re-roll some skill checks off screen so that you aren't aware of your own result. Second, the result of your roll is still ongoing. Gathering information requires 1d4 hours of effort. In-game time, this has not yet been met. Information is still forthcoming to be sure. Third, regardless of your result, some information is beyond the knowledge of, or unlearnable by merely canvassing, the common clientele of the local watering hole no matter how high the roll. :P

I did state very early on in the game that...
Quote:
As a general rule I will not allow high or low modifiers, or the luck of the die, to trump common sense or realism with regard to skills in my games. Especially social and knowledge based ones. (ie I don't care how high your bluff/diplomacy modifier is, you are not going to convince the king to give you the contents of the treasury based upon a die roll) :P

In line with the third point above, even a 29 will only get you so much, depending upon circumstances. Skill points will have an impact, but they will not override everything else. And role playing, or lack thereof, will also provide bonuses and penalties to situations.

I think the strength of the PBP is the role playing focus it allows. I want to embrace it. :)

No apologies needed. I am glad to hear you will be getting at least some relief at work! Sounds like you deserve it and need it! :)

I've added a spoiler with notes on the NPCs we've encountered so far to Myrons profile.

GM, could you give a basic description of the remaining Sand Scorpions?

After the RP is over and the loot is sold, Myron buys the following things.

Myron's shopping:

kukris and armor upgraded to mwk

oil of magic stone
oil of bless weapon
Potion of CLW x2
Traveler's any-tool
Wound paste

Remaining wealth: 449 gp, 9 sp, 4 cp

Certainly. :)

Three of the Sand Scorpions, including Black Kiss, strike you as rogues. The fourth member looked to mix sword play with spellcasting. This fourth member is the one to return with Black Kiss. The entire group have proven quite reclusive up to this point.

I'm not sure how I got half-orc into the earlier posts, but the other female in the Scorched Hand is definitely half-elven. :P

And Sabu is a priest not a scribe. Kheled would be able to tell you that he is actually one of the more experienced clerics in the Grand Mausoleum and a former active member of the Voices of the Spire. ;)

Fixed.

I have been thinking (and reading forum threads) most of the day about Forewarned. The application of it. The implications now and for the future. And I have concerns. Not the least of which is the ability stepping all over a 9th level spell (Foresight) with constant and unlimited use. As such, I am leaning towards ruling that the readied action is not allowed in a surprise round in which Forewarned allowed you to act.

So for example, in this combat, Elrisiel would have had to delay to hit the snake with her acid, reducing her init to after the snake for round 1 and beyond. Or she could have acted on her init but having failed her perception check, would have to act on no information other than impending danger.

There are so many corner cases which concern me and I think I am happiest with my proposed solution. I wish to think on it some more however.

I welcome your comments on the matter.

I think that's a valid concern with the Forewarned ability in a PbP format. I'm fine with not allowing a readied action and Elrisiel having to delay if she beats something's initiative in a surprise round (although presumably she could still come off delay after a danger reveals itself but before it acts?) and wants to strike at it.

Christmas period is being brutal to me - flying back to KL tomorrow, then should be back on board with everything on December 31.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

That is fine for me. I'm currently working on a submission for Wayfinder which has a deadline on Dec. 31st.

In other news, I've been busy making Magic Pants. In fact, I seem to have done such a good job that I somehow currently find myself tasked with making yet more magic pants.

Happy 2015. Also, bump.

Happy 2015 to you too!

Happy New Year to all as well! I'm back and ready for action! :)

Post up in a jiffy!

Is interest waining? Are people busy? I was hoping things would pick up after the holiday break.

I would like to try and get the 1st book done before our 12 month mark (ie May). Is everyone up for trying? Anyone up for trying? :P

I feel busy, anyway. But I am posting!

Male Dwarf (Pahmet) Ranger (Warden / Trapper) 2

Mus'ad still here, I think the pace is lacking primarily due to no-one wanting to step out and be the one to push the pace. Partially this is due to us being set-up around the Prof as the centerpiece and Alex is busy recovering from laptop meltdown.

That being said, I'll be a bit more proactive in thread to at least provide a bit of potential direction.

Pretty sure that if we weren't using the strain/injury variant, you'd have killed us all by now with rolls like that. :P

Male Osirian Oracle (Life) FC 4 HP:34 AC:15 INIT:+1 PERC:+3 F/R/W:+3/+2/+4

Alex must be rubbing off on him...lol

And Mus'ad answers the 19-19-20 and responds with a 20-19 of his own!

(Except that I'm going to have be a spoilsport and ask how he got an AoO when he was flat-footed. He doesn't have Combat Reflexes, does he?)

Male Dwarf (Pahmet) Ranger (Warden / Trapper) 2

I was going to question that too... but decided to roll with it ;)

Yeah, my mistake calling for it. I'll ignore the AoO. Sorry.

The die roller has been super crazy lately it seems.

I'll post up as soon as I get home from daughter's basketball practice.

Thanks for stepping up everyone! :)

Sorry; I just know I'd put on my rules-lawyer hat to argue if a flat-footed opponent took an AoO against us. I couldn't do so with a clear conscience if I didn't point this one out. :)

If AK doesn't check in, I vote the Professor Inspires Courage for those of us at the end of the round.

Male Dwarf (Pahmet) Ranger (Warden / Trapper) 2

It's no problem. Hopefully the AoO roll and damage gets used for the conventional attack... as I'd prefer the 8 damage to the 3 :)

Joana wrote:

He could make the Knowledge (religion) check too and tell Pherenike to use her flail. Or he could attempt the Perception check.

Maybe Mus'ad can use whichever d20 he's not using to attack for the Perception check.

I do the same thing as a player, and for the same reasons Joana. :)

I will DMNPC the professor (as requested).

And yes I will use the first rolls for your attack Mark. And the last roll for your perception.

Just rolled double 20s in another game. The dice are hot! :)

Male Osirian Oracle (Life) FC 4 HP:34 AC:15 INIT:+1 PERC:+3 F/R/W:+3/+2/+4

Or broken :]

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Sure enough, the second Myron drops his kukri, the 18's and 20's start rollin' in. Fortunately, I doubt the skeleton survives long enough for Butterfly's Sting to have triggered anyway, and this frees Pherenike to smash one of the others.

Kheled Hadri wrote:

I'm starting to think so...

Wooooow. I thought the bug swarm was in the doorway at G/H 22. Man was I off.

Oops :)

Twenty flasks of alchemist's fire. Talk about being prepared. Nicely done.

In hindsight, scrolls of burning hands might have been more useful. But oh well- I had money to spend and couldn't figure out what to spend it on.

Scrolls would have been lighter; I don't think I've ever seen a wizard with twenty pounds of encumbrance to spare. ;)

Masterwork backpacks and not having a negative Strength modifier help. ;P

Burn off some of that alchemist's fire, and it looks like we've found our party pack mule then. ;D

Male Osirian Oracle (Life) FC 4 HP:34 AC:15 INIT:+1 PERC:+3 F/R/W:+3/+2/+4

That would be the party fighter...He Haw!!!!!!

lol

Nope, Pherenike has less than seven pounds to spare before armor check penalty and reduced mobility kicks in.

Why not the party oracle? He's already slow. :P

Male Osirian Oracle (Life) FC 4 HP:34 AC:15 INIT:+1 PERC:+3 F/R/W:+3/+2/+4

The female wizard is a body builder compared to Kheled...you don't want him going down to 15' movement... :]

Sure I do. Then the bugs catch up to him first. ;)

Man, I'm glad splash damage is something, because I can't hit the broadside of a barn apparently.

Well, the swarm has a touch AC of 18 for starters. And your flasks have a range increment of 10'. :P

hp 22/36, AC 18/15/14, CMD 17, F: +6, R: +8, W: +3 (+2 vs fear); Init: +4, Perception: +10, Sense Motive: +5 Halfling Fighter (Lore Warden) 2/rogue (knife master) 2

Man, Mus'ad is having a shitty day! It is almost bordering on slapstick comedy.

"Aahh....bugs!...ow....fire....ouch...bugs...it stings....acid....it burns....more bugs....uuurrrghh...more fire....pain...maybe I can hide in this corner...aargh...still with the fire...why?....A GIANT SPIDER!!....oh, the humanity!"

I was thinking the same thing and your description is bang on. :D

I was debating when/if the spider would appear but the errant flask sealed the deal. :P

I believe Myron shouldn't provide soft cover to the solfugid due to Pherenike being more than twice his height from the top of the table and being closer to him than her target is.

PRD>Combat>Combat Modifiers>Cover wrote:

This is the most ridiculously hilarious fight ever.

It is quite humorous. Not exactly a heroic show, but I could see this happening in the Mummy movies. :)

Couldn't we cut out the middleman and just throw gold coins at swarms? It's some kind of verminous protection racket. By my casual count, this one took 130 gp of damage. :P
