Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Justin's flame Ray shoots through the spectre, bubbling off some of its ectoplasm. The Ray continues upwards, striking the ceiling far above and punching a hole straight through

"Awww,... I like it when they catch on fire,..." Justin pouts.

Well ....ugh

Karrin feels the icy clutch of the spectre as its insubstantial hands wrap around her neck. The room spins and she feels tired...so tired

As the battle continues. Hamar sees these are heroes and not villains. If I am allowed I will break from my spot and rush the Spectre from behind to strike it. I will Dervish Dance if I have to. Can't let my opportunity to get out of this place ruined by a lousy Spectre!

If you do the dervish dance I'll say you can cover the distance this round and attack the next

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"Karrin? KARRIN!"

Justin reaches for a small sphere in his pocket, but the arcane image for the spell is no longer in his mind. He used his force sphere on the portals guardian spirits. With a snarled curse, he points a commanding finger at the spectre.

"Ekuur! Get Karrin! Rhiannon! Take it from the side! Nari! Can you pin that b@$#@&d down?!?"

All trace of the usually taunting, smirking wizard is gone.

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

Nari's trembling stops as sparks begin to arc all across her body as she gathers the energy to blast the specter. The energy starts to concentrate on her hand, and then jumps rapidly towards the specter, shooting it with concentrated electricity.

Hamar leaps from the shadows and charges at the Spectres back utilizing the ancient tribal forms of combat passed from generation to generation amongst his people. His form is blur of tanned leathers and furs...

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

His attention drawn to the sudden blur of movement, Justin glances at the approaching fur-clad figure, then back to Karrin and the Spectre.

Then he does a double-take.

"Ok. NOW what?!?"

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

srsly?

Nari's energy arcs out, wrapping the spectre in webs of St. Elmo's fire. . The spectre screeches again, but remains in one piece.

A blurred form rushes the Dias, running almost supernaturally fast down one of the long descending aisles of the gallery.

Just Rhiannon and Ekuur to go this round

As the Spectre dissipates Hamar re-sheathes his weapons and pauses in place.

In Celestial "I see now that the ball of light that I observed battling that foul undead was a Celestial of some sort. I have been trapped here for several days and you are the first living beings I have come across. If it is not too much trouble, can I ask for your assistance in escaping this hellish place? I will find my own way to my homeworld, somehow..."

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"Hmm," Karrin says as she regards Hamar, "Anyone know what he's saying?"

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

"He says that he has been trapped here for days and asks for our assistance in getting out of this place," she said quietly, letting the electricity that had been crackling around her body fade away. "He is speaking in the language of celestials."

Hamar grins and switches to the common tongue, "Sorry, I was unsure whether the common trade language of my world would be understandable by any of you and I was told by the man who taught me that Celestial would be the same no matter where spoken. Still, my question remains the same, will you assist me?"

1 person marked this as a favorite.
female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"Oh, sure," Karrin says with an easy smile, "We're mercenaries by trade, but we're usually in the business to help people. Making money is important as well, you got to pay the bills and stuff, but mostly we try to help people. My name's Karrin, who are you?"

Karrin speaks with a valley girl inflection, kind of rambling, kind of cutesy, and she usually sports a good natured smile. She projects a friendly but dim witted persona.

Physically she's far from imposing, she's only 5'4, and slender, with a build more befitting a yoga instructor then a powerful front line fighter. She does however carry a glowing crystal great axe and swings it with ease. She has a big spiked gauntlet on her right hand and silver capped horns on her head giving her the look of a slight female Hellboy.

"I am Hamar of the Hyena tribe. I hail from the Eastern Shaar. My allies and I were fighting in gladiator games when a gigantic wormlike creature burst through the arena floor. I was standing next to the Gith monk who attempted to shift planes to avoid the creatures attack. Somehow I was dragged along and ended up in a strange place with colorful pools all around me. I thought I saw the way back but ended up here. I have little in the way of gold Karrin but I am an able warrior and could repay you with service for your help. I would like to try to get back to my allies though to see if they still live..."

Hamar looks like a cromagnum cave man with long hair down his back and the sides of his head shaved, the hyena motif hairdo. He is well muscled but not muscular. He wears fine leather armor too fine for a mere barbarian. The scimitars at this side are of excellent quality as is the cloak on his back.

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"Well met Hamar." Justin says with a slight bow.

The tall, lean man wears a long leather coat. Beneath the leather coat his weapon baldric, holding his longsword, also sports several scroll cases and potion vials. His hair is slightly on the long side, just enough to give him a rebel/rougish look without being unkempt. He is obviously a caster, far more at ease with the spells that Hamar observed him casting than with the blade at his side.

The fellow smoothes his slight beard, not quite long enough to call a proper goatee.
"Interesting. I've been to few places since I met you guys. But I've never met a Tribesman from anyplace that spoke Celestial. Is that common anywhere you know of Karrin? Might help us find the way back to his home plane." Justin asks, eying the newcomer keenly, although without menace.

Male Human (Athasian) Cleric 10

Ekuur nods to Hamar in greeting, but keeps a wary look in his eye. "I am Ekuur, sometimes called the Everburning, of the city-state of Tyre."

Ekuur is an imposing figure, standing well over 6' tall (6'3" to be exact) and obviously over 200 pounds. His skin is a bronze tone, and with his bronze-plated half-plate armor, looks more like a bronze statue than a man. He carries an odd weapon - a long wooden club set with three wicked-looking iron blades. Every now and then, wisps of flame seem to flicker about the blades.

He turns quickly to Karrin. "My spell will wear off soon, and you will feel the effects from that monster once again. If we wish to ensure that those are fixed quickly, we must find diamonds and grind them to dust and a place to rest so that I may pray to the Sacred Flame for the proper prayer to remove the grave-touch from you. Preferably before a full day cycles through."

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"Wait, what? She's still under the effect of the Spectre's death touch?" Justin pipes up, eyes wide.

"Alright Hamar, you said you've been here for a few days, do you know anywhere close by where we can hole up in relative safety for a day?"

Justin' listens to the response, but his eyes are also looking back the way they came. He examines the portal, looking for any way to disable it without blowing himself up.

Hamar is tall, about 6'5", forgot to include that above.

Hamar laughs at Justin's comment, "I did not learn Celestial on the Shaar but from my friend the Gith in our travels".

Hamar shakes his head and furrows his brows at the mention of the injuries that Karrin received. At Ekuur's introduction, "Tyre? I know not of this city. The largest city I know of is Unthalass where the God-King Gilgeam rules. It is this very city where I was transported accidentally and ended up here".

Turning back to Justin, "Sadly, that is why I am here, I had hoped to enter this place to get away from the roving hordes of undead wandering the city. Wait, did you and yours come to this place on purpose?"

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"Right," Karrin says at Ekuur's warning, "Let's get moving then, we got evil undead plots to stop, and the team's plucky tiefling heroes to fix. Preferably the healing bit before the other as I'm sure there's gonna be one heck of a fight before we're though."

Obviously we can talk and move but for all intents and purposes let's say we search the room and move forward if we can. 9 minutes isn't a long time for adventuring

female elan Psion (Kineticist) 10

Nari leaves Justin to explain to the scary new person exactly what is going on and starts doing a quick search of the immediate area. It was probably too much to hope for that what they needed would be nearby, but it was foolish not to at least look.

Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27

Nari is a slim girl of average height with red hair, pale skin, and brilliantly green eyes. She isn't wearing any armor, but she is carrying a bow and quiver. Her clothing is plain, but well suited to adventuring. Her gear is in contrast to her body language. She jumps and starts at every noise, and seems to be trying to hide behind her hair rather than draw any attention to herself.

,...

Turning back to Justin, "Sadly, that is why I am here, I had hoped to enter this place to get away from the roving hordes of undead wandering the city. Wait, did you and yours come to this place on purpose?"

"Well, yes and no. 'On Purpose' sort of ignores a couple of minor details. Like it was either that or allow a potential horde of demon-spawned spirits free access to the World Ash, and ergo the rest of the cosmology." Justin says over his shoulder, looking for how the portal is powered.

"If this building is supposed to be the main departure platform to All Ports Planar-wise, then it's probably safe to assume that it isn't. Erm, Safe, I mean. We should probably find another hidey -hole pronto so Ekuur can whip a cure for Karrin. JUST as soon as I figure out how to shut this thing down,..."

Female Human Cavalier 8 (Order of the Dragon)

Sitting atop a storm grey destrier whose mane and tail seem to be comprised of smoke, the tanned armored blonde with sharp green eyes flashes the man a smile after she stows the wicked looking spear in the holster built into her saddle. Attractive, her clearly more solid than average frame, speaks to a warrior’s build, her easy smile and almost formal body language slightly at odds.

"Well met Hamar, I'm Rhiannon." she says with a nod.

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin acknowledges Hamar's comments with a nod as he continues to study the portal.

"Yes Hamar, but THIS particular portal is unusual in that it has been specifically enchanted to remain opened. Permanently as far as I can tell. Permitting several denizens of this plane free access to the World Ash, as I mentioned. We can't allow that to continue, as it has already led to the abduction and death of several innocents." Justin explains, sounding more like a teacher than an adventurer.

"Fortunately, we already know of another usable portal out of here. But we have to close this one to prevent these strange demonic spirits from continuing to invade Yggdrasil. Unfortunately we can't just physically wreck it, I'm afraid the feedback might be locally catastrophic. If I can just locate the Keystone of the spell-weave,..."

With a growl worthy of Merle, Justin calls the feline caster,
"Grrr! Hey Merle, you've got a really good, innate sense for this type of thing. Any chance YOU can find the runes power-source? When I try to detect the individual threads of magic all I get is a blinding headache!"

Male Shadow's Status | Human Scout 6/Barbarian 1/Dervish 5 | HP=114/114 | AC=23 (Variable) | Init. +6 | F +8 | Ref +15 | Will +10 | Per +19 (Darkvision)

"If we can't close the portal, perhaps we can simply bring down the building preventing passage that way?"

Hamar looks around him at the sheer size of the building, "Of course, that would attract much attention..."

He turns to Ekuur, "I have seen many buildings here in the city, if it is diamonds you seek I may be able to scout locally. The dead have no use for such riches. If I find any I can bring them back so you can assist Karrin, if the plan is to stay here for now, this may be for the best as my knowledge of this place, while poor, is better than that which you all posses".

Nari paused in her search of the room.

"That won't work," she said quietly, looking at the floor rather than make eye contact with the frightening new person. "C-collapsing the building only stops us going through the portal. The undead....ummmm......they can just go through the stones. We have to actually shut it off or it will just keep hurting Yggdrasil and the undead will keep hurting the people who live there..." Her voice trailed off and she stood there looking like she wished she could disappear.

Would Hamar recognize Nri as an Elan? One of his companions was Elan from Faerun.

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

"Well I'm originally from a place called Oerth, in the Griff Mountains, and I'd name the monastery but I'm thinking the folks live in that part of the world haven't heard of it so it's highly unlikely that people form other worlds might know of it. Anyways, I left home a few years back and stumbled into this place called the World Serpent Inn, which is kind of a mini version of The Cage, 'cept the doors there don't have keys, but the important ones are kind of guarded by enterprising individuals who get to collect tolls, but then again those halls are always shifting and so any attempts at creating any kind of order is pretty much doomed long term. Only the bar itself doesn't change . . .

"The Cage is kind of different though, That's where we call home these days, all sorts of doors, if you know where to look, and more importantly, got a key. Sigal is like the hallway to everything and all the planes and worlds are hidden away behind one door or another. Course, the keys, or a lack thereof, that's the thing that makes a hall into a cage. If you don't have keys you're stuck there. It's a pretty amazing place, every sort of person you could ever dream to meet, in one big city, I mean some of them aren't nice and stuff, and the rain is already nasty yucky stuff before it falls, and there's no sky, just city but they got food and culture, and people speak all languages, and you could see a demon or an angel just walking down the street, or maybe just a gnome from somewhere who claims to have made a potato powered rocket, or a drow swinging dual scimitars claiming to be an renegade, or like a hippopotamus man with a black powder hand gun, or like a darkling and his dark spawn who run the local shoe sine . . . it's all pretty amazing, oh and tieflings everywhere, back home I never saw another tiefling till I left, but in Sigal they're everywhere.

"Now as to the second part of your question . . . I don't remember it. I think there was something else because I'm holding up two fingers, but I sometimes talk myself out and what ever I'm thinking just flies out of my mind. Oh, and if there's any diamond dust in there I need to call dibs, whatever that ghost did to me really took the strength right out of me, and I'm front line for all these squishy casters. Just look at them with their pointy wizard hats and wands, they turn battles right quick, don't get me wrong, but they can not take a hit, and shouldn't have to with someone like me running around. Hmmm, what were we talking about again? Did I ask what sort of skill set you got yet Hamar? And also are you any good at spotting traps and such? Our last guy who was good at that had to leave before we embarked on this last mission . . . kind of sad really. He was our team leader."

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Justin pats Nari's shoulder awkwardly, and gives the girl a half smile meant to be comforting. Then he snorts at Karrin, piping in when the Tiefling pauses only for breath,...

"Breathe Karrin! Breathe." Justin chuckles, then looks curiously at the newcomer Hamar as he kneels to look at the floor.

"What Karrin said. If you can translate Karrin-Speak then she pretty much summed it up. Well, maybe SUMMED UP aren't quite the right words" He adds sotto voice.

"But yeah, we're all from different worlds, ended up landing in Sigil, which pretty much seems to be an impossible mystic center to the Great Cosmic Wheel. If there's a way back to YOUR world, It will be in Sigil. The trick is not only finding it, but finding the key to open it too. A key to a portal can be anything. And I mean ANYthing. It can be an actual key crafted from a rare metal found only on the Plane of Fire, or it can be a common chicken feather, a white one."

"Yggdrasil, on the other hand, is the opposite of a 'cage'. Anyone on your world have stories about a great Cosmic Tree with roots and branches that go and touch other worlds? Well, it's not a story, It's for real. But instead of being a Cosmic Wheel Hub, it actually grows to, around, and through all of the planes. You just need a map to get around. Or a guide. And folks live there, just like they do on a more, 'normal', world."

Justin gets down on one know to join Hamar, and looks curiously at the floor. "What's up Hamar? Did you find something?"

Yes to your question

Hamar walks to the edge of the Dias and runs a hand along a dusty section. A small trapdoor is revealed under the accumulation of dust. He takes a moment and nods to himself as if satisfied

The door isn't trapped

The door opens with a creak and a plume of dust. A ladder descends down into darkness. There is about a meter of floor structure and then the space below opens up, it's extent unknowable in the pitch darkness

Hamar stands and looks at Justin, "A dungeon of some kind beneath this dias. Perhaps your key lies down there magic user. These dungeons, nothing good comes of entering them, in the Shaar we have no dungeons, if ones eyes and ears are sharp threats can be seen long before they are upon you. My people do not talk overmuch, it is dangerous to speak. If prey hears you, it will run and you will sleep with an empty belly. If a predator hears you, you will fill its empty belly! In dungeons predators lie in wait and it is hard to see and hear them. No I do not like them but I will enter this one if you wish me to".

Hamar then turns to Karrin, "I like to hear your speech Karrin, the voice of the city folk is music to my ears which for so many years listened to the whistling of the wind and the cries of wild animals and little more. To answer your question, I am an able fighter and an excellent scout. In my time with my companions I was able to apply my knowledge of natural traps to civilized ones, though I am not sure a trap designed to slay is civilized. Hopefully, I can serve as a replacement for your "last guy".

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"Oooo! A hidey hole!" Justin smirks.

"Oh, I don't know Hamar. I mean I'm no fan of dungeons, at least not a fan of occupying them, but a hidden doorway means that someone wanted to hide something. And that means something worth finding. Add to that it was being guarded, on BOTH sides of the gate, by a few of the nastier variety of semi-corporeal undead, and I think you just hit the jackpot!" He says with a grin.

"Still, good points. Also not a fan of joining the buffet line as the main course." Justin adds, looking into the darkness below.

Justin looks at Hamar thoughtfully as he speaks to Karrin. The wizard gently nudges Ekuur with his elbow.

"I think you may have competition as 'Most Serious in Group'." He says sagely.

Ekuur merely raises an eyebrow at the mage's jab. I almost picture him adding an "Indeed." after that ...

"I believe I still retain the title of 'Least Talkative' in any event."

He peers down the opening. "I shall go first, unless anyone has an objection." With a brief word, he causes his trikal to become engulfed in flame, and looks further down, using it as a sort of torch.

Ekuur leans down, his trikal illuminating the space below.

The light shows the ladder descending another five meters to a floor below. The room seems to be an open area corresponding to the Dias above. Chalcedony pillars support the Dias, carven in obscene demonic relief.

Beyond the immediate circle of floor at the terminus of the ladder there is a tangle of what look like old theater props. Racks of dusty costumes, disassembled scenery, and stands of puppets are visible. It also looks like there are several other ladders leading up to other spots in the Dias
