Mes? In the past, yes. I used to GM an entire group of cheese monkeys from 1-12. Adorable bunch. But I'm more comfortable with a fixed group of people then having random dudes show up at my table all the time. I have to vet their characters, get irritated with their maths, and restrain myself from throwing Core Rulebooks at them.

One of the funnier moments. When I described to them the book was on fire, the 8 int rogue went, "I unzip my pants and pee on the book"
So I told them - the book is now not on fire, but it smells of pee and has yellow smudges on it. And you can't read the writing.

Oh I'm a 3-star GM. I'm retired though. They only call me for Con specials.

answers to questions:

Things I wish to playtest:
1)Can a PFS adventure of earlier seasons be accomplished solo?
”GM Mort” wrote:
Yes, your crazy GM actually played this one solo before starting the recruitment thread. Don't ask others to do something you can't do, yourself :p

I think you answered your own question ;)

2)What are the differences between solo play and a full party?
Solo game, you’re not waiting on other players to ‘do their thing’ but you don’t have them there to ‘do their thing’ either. When you have the party there are some skills you don’t have, or you’re not as good at; so you wait for them to do it. Full party should be more effective but will take longer and some characters may be less involved than others

3)What do you miss out as a solo player? Do you get the full story experience?
I felt I got the full story experience, that’s part of the reason I like playing AP’s and PFS scenarios, they do a good job of creating and telling the story. What did I miss out on as a solo player? Occasionally someone will post something really entertaining that’s just wonderful. Whether it’s something they say in game, or in discussion, or someone will attach a web page with a quote, or a video or a gif. For instance when you posted the video of Evanescence I sat and watch four or five more.

4)Is the story telling aspect enhanced because the GM can give the player more attention, whereas in a group, some may not be willing to participate in an individual player's story arc, plot hook?
I think this depends on the GM. I enjoyed the conversation opportunities you provided with the NPC’s. As for individual player’ story arcs or plot hooks; I’ve not been in any games where they were used a lot. As someone who wants to play the AP or scenario I think the player’s backstory, story arc or plot hook should be the ‘condiments’ and the AP or scenario be the’ meat’ of the PBP. I think referring to past history (like Valda talking about sisters) or using particular weapons or armor that relates to character history/culture or using dialect to emphasize that history is fine, but the main thing is the adventure ahead of them. Now if the GM wants to create a story for the players, that’s a different style of game than I think is intended with the Paizo written stuff.

5)The PBP medium has always been a slow one. Is it because the players are waiting for each other, or the GM?
Both, I think it depends on the game, the one thing I have seen is that when a game drops below the desired posting rate, whether it’s the GM’s fault or a players fault, that it’s hard to get it back to that speed.
I wish GM’s would list things they want and then stick to it. Things like posting rates or how many people are needed to post to make a decision or how long they will wait until someone is botted, by either the GM or a player and that also be clarified beforehand. Also combat by block initiative works best for speed.
6lWould a PBP be enhanced with fewer people so there is more communication between GM and players?
Again it depends on the game. Some of the best games I have seen were with three characters. In ‘the godsmouth heresy’ game I was in there were only three characters and two of us posted quickly and often. The GM kept the game moving in ‘out of combat situations’ without waiting for the other player. ‘In combat’ we waited for the third person and they were posting at least once a day. I’ve seen a ‘dungeon crawl’ with eight people move reasonably fast, but the ‘scout’ was dragging the party along and the only RP was between characters, even the trips in town were just ‘list what you buy’. This is part of the reason I prefer AP’s, they force at least some RP with NPC’s. I’ve seen several games that were taking three gestalt characters so they could move reasonably faster. Interestingly enough I’m still not sure what I think about gestalt, I’m in one other game where I play a gestalt character (fighter/cleric, surprise, surprise),with sometimes three characters in it and sometimes four characters, and in that game the communication is still almost nil and is at a dead stop.

7)Can a PBP be both engaging and fast at the same time?
Yes, especially if everyone knows that is the expectation and is willing to do it.

8)How fast can a PBP go if both GM and player are willing to work on it?
He he he

9)How stressful is it on the GM to run a PBP at a fast pace?
I don’t know, how stressful has it been? Hopefully this game will let you analyze this question ;)

I was tired when I finished this, I hope it makes sense and helps answer the questions.

Yes, its the end. Black waters in 1 week and a day.

GM screwup for forgetting to give you treasure in the last room. There was a set of polished silver plates each with decorative burst of a Taldan noble rising from its center like a man from a mercury pool(1400gp), a gold plated ceremonial longsword (300 gp), 3 torcs of braided gold and electrum (900 gp), an ornate osirian hourglass filled with ash (600gp), a priceless qadiran stone tablet detailing the first invasion of Taldor (1500gp), and a giant sack of various coins from civilizations long past (2000gp).

wow, what good fun! Is that faster or slower than you thought it would be/

I ran a quick list on the questions you asked, please look over it and ask any more questions that may be helpful. I was waiting up to see how it would end, so now I'm going to sleep. I will check back in about 8 or 9 hours to see if there is anything else to talk about.

It has been fun and more exciting than most games, I think because of the both the pace and the singularity of it. Going solo certainly keeps the interest up!

1)The question was in relation to the average pathfinder. Though in asking for Gestalt, I don't think I really got the average pathfinder...

I chose this scenario on purpose because:
a) I like it.
b) It gives you the possibility of fighting a swarm, incorporeal, deal with multiple saves - I want to see how players actually handle situations as a single person instead of a party.
c) It has a good mix of combat and RP.

Also - your GM is a Cheese monkey. This was what I used.

Obviously all fighting was done in fused form, AC was 28 with mage armor constantly on.

3 and 4) Honestly - I did not run the entire thing fully as written. I think my ability to fully roleplay characters with multiple facets is still very limited. Technically, Lady Daciliane was supposed to be looking her nose down you but yet willing to ask you for help. I struggled with the concept on how is that going to happen, and decided to split it into 2 different encounters instead. If you want, I can tell you all the edits I did to the module.

I really do believe that players should be allowed to change things, and having a module just saying this happens, that happens, is flat. I believe in player agency. Players should get to make things happen by their choice.

5) I think GMs often just say they want 1 post per day, but are not willing to enforce it(as such, no one gives a d@mn). For me I feel I made the rules very clear. Either you post 1/day, or in 3 days I give you the boot.

Yet from my perspective as a player, sometimes, nothing is happening, and I wonder if I am being rude by prompting a GM for more information. As a player, I want all the cards to be laid on the table - I want to know how to proceed on. If I fail a knowledge check, so be it, at least I know how I fked up. I hope I didn't leave stuff ambiguous for you.

Also - it takes only one player to slow the game. What should be the best course of action for a player who does not post in 24 h? Boot him for inactivity?

A lot of GMs ask others to write long backstories. I find its a waste of time. I would rather look at a player's posting history to determine whether the person is suitable for my expectation of fast paced games and is reliable. As a matter of fact I even sorted out by timezone. Not so good having someone active in European time, but since I'm asleep on that, I can't respond. Sure - some may say discrimination, but for me it's more of pragmatism. I'm a strong believer of expediency, like LNs are :)

6)I think I prefer games with fewer people. If 1 person is participating, its easy to bark on that person if he's slow. If there are more people, I may not be able to keep track on who is posting at what time. I enjoy Gestalt characters - it lets you do things you wouldn't usually be able to do. And I'm all about FOR SCIENCE!

9) Pretty. But I was really pushing as fast as I could go, and I realize that despite my (mostly-insane) activity, there are times that I can't camp at my phone/comp 24/7. I will tone down my own activity just to keep my sanity and be able to keep up the pace for the long haul. Thank god I only took a single game. It's fun, yes, but god it's a lot more work then expected.

To answer your question: It went more or less as what I thought it would be. I figured during combat things would go faster.

I'll probably take a break for a while, though I'm interested in doing Silver Mount Collection in the future. I don't know if I can sustain an entire AP, though.

One more question. What are the things I could improve on for GMing PBP?

I like your paladin/summoner, I've not played a summoner but it would keep it from being entirely solo. If I were to change Valda I would have gone fighter (two handed specialist)/oracle. When I designed her the GM wanted human characters (it was for Norse flavored game) so I went bloodrager with the celestial bloodline. Since you let us go Aasimar, that would have covered the Valkyrie flavor. I agree after playing solo, defense is paramount.

Your right it takes only one to slow a game down. But if a GM lays out how things will be handled and involves the players in the conversation, I think it can be handled well.

Once I saw how much you were posting in comparison to the amount you promised in the recruitment thread, I figured you were pushing hard, not that I mind. But I can see how that pace would be very difficult to keep up, not that it wasn't fun to see if we could do it!

I like backstories, it helps ground me in the character, however I do more backstory for the parents or family of my characters, because I like playing young characters. I enjoy figuring out where they came from so I can settle their personality for when I play them. It doesn't make sense to me to start a character mid-life when they have teenager skills...

Enjoy your break, I will be watching to see when you post your next game, might dust off a younger slightly altered version of Valda.

Your final question, things to improve? Hard to critique since it was my first "solo" game. You answered questions promptly. You altered the scenario's NPC's responses so RP seemed natural. You let Valda roll for gather information instead of just Knowledge: local. The pace seemed natural, RP extended where it fit and speeding things up when it was just information. It seemed you followed the intent of the scenario and when you used different methods they were firmly based on the rules available.

The two spots that were a little clunky were both my fault. My assumption that I could throw a spear one handed and when I rolled the attack before noticing that there was a fortitude roll needed. You explained how you handled them, so I couldn't have asked for more than that. I get the feeling that if those types of situations kept coming up that you may have handled them differently ;)

All in all, a great experience from my end, thank you for running the game and I would certainly apply to any games you were running!
