Against the Greater Good

Game Master Browman

The noble space marines of the deathwatch battle against the expanding Tau empire and its Allies.

1 to 50 of 120 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

I am looking for people interested in a deathwatch campaign. The focus of this campaign will be fighting against the Tau and their allies, both human and alien.

In my experience with PBP games live or die based on how frequently people post, so posting once a day (including weekends) is a requirement, please acknowledge that you understand this requirement when expressing interest. If the group is out of combat, I will assume people who do not post have nothing to say/ do. In combat I will make a reasonable guess as to what you would do.

Now on to Character Creation.

Normal character creation will be used with the following exceptions.

1. When generating stats you may switch the position of 2 of your rolled stats. For example you rolled a 8 for your BS and a 16 for your fellowship and want to make a devastator, you can switch the 8 and 16 then apply all bonus normally given to those stats.

2. You can use any official Deathwatch source book, but if it isn't from the core book please provide the source and page number so I can reference the appropriate pages when necessary.

3. the Rites of battle tables 3-9 and 3-10 will be used for determining power armour. If you do not have access to rites of battle I will do the rolls for you.

Background is important. Space Marines are more than just post-human killing machines and your character should reflect that.

Interested players have until Midnight EST, Friday the 23rd of May 2014 to submit their completed character. I am aiming for a party of 5, but that number is subject to change depending on how many people submit characters and the quality of said characters. having a cool character is more important than having a super powerful character. To reinforce this fact, the player I feel has the best backstory and flow to their character will receive the signature wargear talent for free.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Dark Archive

I'll bite, I'll generate some stats and mull it over a little:

WS: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (1, 7) + 30 = 38
BS: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (9, 9) + 30 = 48
St: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (1, 8) + 30 = 39
To: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (2, 5) + 30 = 37
Ag: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (2, 9) + 30 = 41
Int: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (2, 5) + 30 = 37

Wp: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (2, 7) + 30 = 39
Fel: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (1, 2) + 30 = 33

Re-Roll Fel: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (5, 9) + 30 = 44

Will post again in a bit.

Nice to see another 40k game, too many have surrendered to the chaos of the warp ;(

Let's see what the dice gods will give me...

WS : 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (3, 1) + 30 = 34
BS : 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (3, 7) + 30 = 40
ST : 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (5, 1) + 30 = 36
To : 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (9, 6) + 30 = 45
Ag : 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (10, 8) + 30 = 48
Int : 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (10, 9) + 30 = 49
Pe : 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (1, 3) + 30 = 34
Wp : 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (7, 3) + 30 = 40
Fel : 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (8, 4) + 30 = 42

Hmmm....to the books!

Remember guys you get the choice to re-roll one of your stats, it is really hard to do worse than a 3 or 4 on 2d10.

Good to see other players interested in 40k! My experience with the 40k RPG was that of being the GMNPC Inquisitor to a [Dark Heresy] campaign, so I can safely say that wanting to play a Space Marine has been at the top of my to-do list for the longest time.

Emperor, please give me good dice...

Weapon Skill: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (8, 6) + 30 = 44
Ballistic Skill: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (2, 9) + 30 = 41
Strength: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (6, 6) + 30 = 42
Toughness: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (6, 7) + 30 = 43
Agility: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (4, 4) + 30 = 38
Intelligence: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (8, 8) + 30 = 46
Perception: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (1, 7) + 30 = 38
Willpower: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (9, 3) + 30 = 42
Fellowship: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (1, 6) + 30 = 37

Re-rolling Fellowship: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (8, 10) + 30 = 48

Praise be to the Emperor for giving me good dice rolls!

To the books! I'll see you all when I finalize my character.

Can we swap ability scores around?

@ GM Fenwick

I am allowing everyone to swap 2 of their ability scores before adding their chapter (or any other) bonuses. I have this in place someone doesn't get completely crippled if all the stats important to the specialization are low.

Thanks for the heads-up! Do you have any restrictions in regards to choosing a chapter?

GM_Fenwick wrote:

If it is in an official Deathwatch source and you can provide with a page number it is good to go, I am also fine you using first founding rules to represent a successor chapter with no official rules, just make it clear in your character.

Liberty's Edge

Brothers, may the Emperor use us to deliver his will on the Imperium!

Weapon Skill: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (4, 5) + 30 = 39
Ballistic Skill: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (6, 10) + 30 = 46

Name: Brother Corbulo
Chapter: Ultramarines
+5 to Ballistic Skill and Strength
Tactical Marine
Wounds: 18 + 1d5 ⇒ 18 + (4) = 22
Fate Points: 1d10 ⇒ 9 => 2
Personal Demeanor: Pious
Power Armor History: 1d10 ⇒ 1 => Modified to 2
None shall escape the Emperor’s Wrath: Incorporating a rare and prized Persecutor Target Acquisition Spirit, this
armour constantly scans for targets, predicting ranges, windage, and elevation, as well as passively noting bio-signs
for later targeting recall. It makes nearly imperceptible adjustments to the aim and firing rate of the wearer, sometimes
even anticipating the bearer’s movements. Many warriors are put off by such contrary behaviour, but all eventually
learn to become one with the intentions of their second skin. The obvious advantage gives the wearer a +5 bonus to
BS. However, the armour is sluggish to respond to unplanned events, as it seems to dislike the jostling of its precise
calculations. The wearer suffers a –10 penalty to Dodge in melee.

Having survived the Battle for Macragge, Corbulo believes the Emperor is watching over him, and, even in the worst moments, the Emperor's power will help him.
He is very mortified and ashamed that his melee combat abilities are not on par with the rest.
Last survivor from his squad, he honors the by screaming "Axios!" while entering combat.
He sports, proudly, a deep scar on his right arm where it was almost severed by a Genestealer, wound that didn't stop him from continue the struggle in the battle that claimed all his squad brothers.
Without his squad brothers, with which he had shared origins (Idrisia on the planet Quintarn), indoctrination, training, and hundreds of victories, he ask his Chapter Master to be sent in the Deathwatch, so he can continue the battle against the Xenos, now with more zeal and vengeance than ever.
"For the will of the Emperor is to the Xenos to die, and humanity to thrive over their corpses."

Starting Skill:
* The Deathwatch Tactical Marine begins with Command as a Trained Advanced Skill.
* Bolter mastery: The Tactical Marine gains a +10 bonus to all Ballistic Skill Tests and +2 to Damage when firing a Bolt weapon. This ability only functions in Solo Mode.
Advancements:
* Ballistics Skill +5 (500 xp)
* Rapid Reload (200 xp)
Extra Clip: Hellfire Rounds

Any ideas on what direction most have chosen?

Thinking Apothecary, Techmarine, or Librarian. What tends to be the most useful of the bunch, yet not played all that often? I don't mind filling the less glamorous roles like healer. I only have the core book. Did Chaplains ever become playable?

You can't start as a chaplain and only certain specialties can become one. Any of the specializations have their place.

1d10 ⇒ 7 = Mk 7 Power armour. Mark 7 is the most common and uses the stats found in the core rulebook.

Do you want to keep your power armour history or brave the expanded (to four lists of 10) options?

History

1d10 ⇒ 4 you have a choice between the Emperor's Finest or Undefeated.

Emperor's Finest +5 to Command, fear and pinning tests

Undefeated + 10 to pinning an fear tests, -1 to cohesion. Each time you retreat you permanently lower the +10 bonus by one.

Oh yeah. I literally can't get enough of 40k. I'm so into this. I'll try and get a character up soon enough for your perusal.

I've got to say, while I've got experience with Rogue Trader, Dark Heresy and Only War, I haven't played Deathwatch. I'm looking through the books as I type.

Some Questions:
Can I design my own chapter instead of using any specifically listed in the books?

Is there any means by which I can play something like a scout marine? I know they're supposed to be the neophytes in most chapters, but many chapters like the Raptors and the Raven Guard specialize in them and I know Space Wolves use scouts as elite individuals. Also, if you've played Dawn of War II, Cyrus is a scout sergeant but said he served in the deathwatch.

I quite enjoy warhammer (was surprised to see it here) but i played the tabletop verson. This sounds too epic to pass up but unless i can find the rules online my hands are tied.
Would someone have some help in that regards? (aka an online link?)
And Go Crons!

Rites of Battle has rules for creating your own chapter, but I would prefer if you used one of the existing chapters. Between First Founding, Rites of Battle and Honour the chapter you should have enough options, and you can always use a first founding chapter's rules to represent a successor chapter without their own specific rules.

First founding also has rules for playing a wolf scout.

If you are wanting to go a stealthy character, either raptor or ravenguard would be a good place to start. Carapace (Scout) armour can be taken by anyone without costing requisition.

WHOO!!!

Power Armor History: 1d10 ⇒ 4

Death is Joy: Some warriors are simply made to kill. This armour epitomises that archetype, and though it is of comparatively recent manufacture, numberless foes have learned to fear its countenance. The longer a warrior bears this armour, the more the two become one. As time goes on, bringing a swift end to the enemies of Man is as easy as breathing. Add +2 Damage to any of the wearer’s attacks that do Critical Damage and increase the damage to a Horde’s Magnitude by 1 with any successful attack against a Horde.

Won't roll for Personal Demeanor because I want to match a description to my marine's character.

Gregarious: The Space Marine is a charismatic and talkative sort, one who puts his Battle-Brothers and normal humans at ease.

As his trial Argus took down a Fenris wolf with a bow and arrow he'd crafted in the wilds of Fenris, and now he wears its skin as cloak in battle.
Argus is gregarious, quick to drink, and quick to point out the accomplishments of others, tending to draw attention away from himself.

Alright, I'm going for a Raptors Tactical Marine, with a propensity for sniping.

Weapon Skill: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (5, 8) + 30 = 43
Ballistic Skill: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (4, 8) + 30 = 42
Strength: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (4, 4) + 30 = 38
Toughness: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (9, 4) + 30 = 43
Agility: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (9, 5) + 30 = 44
Intelligence: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (9, 1) + 30 = 40
Perception: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (9, 7) + 30 = 46
Willpower: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (3, 9) + 30 = 42
Fellowship: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (2, 7) + 30 = 39

I'm going to reroll Agility: 2d10 + 30 ⇒ (9, 5) + 30 = 44
And then I'm going to switch around Intelligence and Perception

Wounds: 1d5 + 18 ⇒ (2) + 18 = 20
Fate: 1d10 ⇒ 2 4 Fate Points
Power Armour: 1d10 ⇒ 10 MK 5 "Corvus" Hrm, fitting.
Armour History: 1d5 ⇒ 2
Battle Scars: 1d10 ⇒ 2 Blood of the enemy. Meh, I'll work with it.

Mk 5 armour gets 2 power armour histories, as seen on table 3-8.

I have decided to go with a Storm Warden Apothecary.

Wounds 1d5 + 18 ⇒ (4) + 18 = 22

Everything you need should be there. Feel free to expand on your character's backstory and description though.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Black Templar Assault Marine and a Librarian in the same Deathwatch squad? This can only go downhill from here, brothers...

Sczarni

It means I must be ever vigilant and wary, intent on preventing thr scourge of the warp from overtaking the Deathwatch feom within.

Armour History: 1d5 ⇒ 5
Choosing Skill of the Artificer: 1d10 ⇒ 8

Pauldrons of Fury, eh? Well, I can work with that as well.
