GM Two-Hands |

Hi all, I'm fairly new to posting on these boards. I tried my luck a few times over the years but unfortunately I couldn't reconcile with the time commitment. Things have slowed down for me personally though, and so I figure it's time to try and get among what seems to be a rad community here!
About me: I’ve been playing TTRPG games since 2003, starting off with D&D 3.5 and moving onto 4E until I discovered PF1e. I've since moved onto D&D 5E; though I don't have an issue with the system itself, I really miss the rich and diverse world of the Golarion setting. I've never tried PF2e (I'd love to), but I do miss some of the intricacies of 1st edition.
I've played through and GMed the first book of Rise of the Runelords a few times, finished the Kingmaker and WOTR CRPGs and played a few pathfinder homebrew games as well so I'm fairly comfortable with the setting. I'm hoping that by offering up a game as a GM here I can increase my posting history (and prove to be a consistent and reasonably well-written forum member), and hopefully make it into a game myself one day.
So, here it is. At this stage just an interest check to see if there's an appetite for it, but I'd like to run he first book of Ironfang Invasion, Trail of the Hunted. I'll include some information about character building crunch below, so potential applicants for the actual thread will have an idea of what I'm looking for.
Character creation:
Level 1
Roll for stats! I find it most fun to play this way, so I'd like to offer my players the same. Please don't roll here; we'll save it for the actual recruitment thread.
PHB races only. I know this might sound boring to some, but I like to keep it a little vanilla for immersion's sake.
Classes: Any PHB or APG classes are fine. I'm pretty open to anything here, I'd like to stick to regular versions instead of unchained though, as I'm not terribly familiar with those.
2 x traits of your choosing.
Check out the players guide for free here or on Archives of Nethys for a good take on the types of characters to suit the adventure.
If I can get 6-8 replies here, I'll open up a recruitment thread in the next week or so.
I've probably missed something, but that should be enough to get the creative juices going I'd think! Any questions feel free to raise them here so we can all get an answer. I expect the posting schedule will be every 24-48hrs at least, and I'm pretty open with communication when it comes to life getting in the way. I'm open to establishing a discord group for this as well, if that's something that the final group would be interested in (but I'd prefer to keep the gameplay itself here).
I'd love some experienced PBP veterans to come on board, especially as I'm likely to be a little rusty with the 1e ruleset. The biggest thing I'm asking for is patience, and a little faith.
Lastly, I am an Australian so expect my posts to come at weird hours.
Hit me with questions, queries or feedback! I know some will probably count me as a risk, seeing as how my posting history is so limited. This is a game of chance, we pour our hearts into our characters then stake their lives on the roll of a dice. So why not roll the dice with me?

I'd definitely be interested/ I really like the community in survival mode concept of Ironfang Invasion. I'd likely go with either a druid herbalist/healer type of character or a ranger scout type.
As far as veteran player, I've been playing PBP games here since 2008 and know the ruleset pretty well (I've written a few 3pp titles over the years). I'm basically online for a living so odd posting times aren't an issue (work in Social Media, overnight)

Thanks for putting this out there. I'd be interested, at least if it wouldn't start in earnest until after the Organized Play event. I've been playing PF1e on the boards for something like fifteen years and am currently GMing 3 APs plus a PFS Emerald Spire game, so I'm definitely familiar with the rules set. I've neither played nor GMed Ironfang Invasion, though.
Incidentally, there will be enough interest for you to open a recruitment. As is the case virtually everywhere in gaming, there are far more interested players than GMs.

Wow, I didn't expect such a rapid response! Thanks so much for reaching out guys, good to see there's interest for this one.
@John Woodford, when is the Organized Play event due to finish?
Outpost starts March 2 and nominally ends May 12th, although by the last few weeks the games will mostly have wrapped up. The event listing sheet is HERE, and as you can see there are a lot of people playing and GMing scenarios on the boards.
The major reason it's a busy time for me is that I'm the House GM for the PFS First Edition special, and since that's on a clock I have to pay close attention to it.

I'm super impressed at how quickly you guys jumped in here. Looks like we have 8 interested parties; I'm going to go ahead and start working on a proper recruitment thread.
Seeing as how the Organized Play event still has a pretty long lifespan, can you guys throw me some suggestions as to how long I should keep recruiting open? I'm inclined to stretch it out to 4 weeks, but I'm unsure if having to wait such a long period of time will deter potential applicants...
I'm keen to get this moving, but I don't want to exclude those who are tied up for the next couple of weeks. I feel taking the patient approach should be best, as these games seem to be more marathon than sprint. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Count me interested. I have a elven hedge witch I played in an earlier game which died before the end of book one that I'd still like to play.
If you find that you need help with something you can always reach out, many of us on the boards are more than willing to help out. I've been playing Pathfinder since it's inception and the various iterations of D&D since '79* (except for 4th edition, when Pathfinder premiered, they lost me there).
(* yes, I'm old).

You don't want to take too much time, though. I was part of a recruitment that went on for almost five weeks from start of recruitment to start of game, and several people had lost interest by then.
Recruitment should last between a week to 10 days with a Discussion thread opening within a couple of days after that. Gameplay should start within a week of the closing of Recruitment. These are just "guidelines" that I've noticed most GM's (myself included) seem to follow, YMMV.
Just some of the things you might want to consider:
Background Skills: These have become quite popular as they allow characters two additional skill points, over and above their class skill points, to invest in some of the lesser used skills (Appraise, Craft, Handle Animal, Knowledge (engineering), Knowledge (geography), Knowledge (history), Knowledge (nobility), Linguistics, Perform, Profession & Sleight of Hand) to help flesh out their, as the name implies, background.
Unchained classes: These appear in Pathfinder Unchained, and are little tweaks to some of the base classes to make them more viable. Unchained Rogue gives the Rogue weapon finesse for free (and, let's face it, about 99% of Rogues take WF). Unchained Barbarian takes away the Str & Con bonus for raging and replaces it with a static +2 to attacks & damage rolls and Will saves, while the hit points gained are considered temporary hit points, which disappear first (this keeps the Barbarian from dying when the rage ends and it drops below zero hit points). The Unchained Monk had the biggest revamp including upping it's hit dice to d10 and it's BAB to 1/1. This allows it to keep pace with the Fighter and other 1/1 BAB classes. The Unchained Summoner changes are now considered "the standard" for the class as the the original summoner was so borked to be considered overpowered. These changes bring the class more in line with the other classes.
If you're unfamiliar with something don't worry about it, your player's will be (and there will be others to call BS on things).

Elephant in the room Feat taxes also. IMHO.

Recruitment for most games are around 2 weeks Long...
-------
As for Stats, Rolling has issues of Power Balance between players.
I like rolling stats as well, BUT the power balance and other game play issues is Why Point-Buy is standard for Stats and why I take it over rolling stats.
Now I made a NEW System that takes the best of BOTH.
The PB for the game needs to be set first as it'll control the first roll and the ones following it. The Stats arrays are all Random, but they are ALL the same Point-Buy Value.
-------
I'm fine with the Race and Class restrictions,
though I also enjoy a good gamble for something outside of the box
if it set in stone my Race and Class
(I ran the Expanded Horizon games and players found it fun to play within it's rules)
-------
You should also look at what books are open for Archetypes, or if they should be asked for, as some Archetypes are used to bypass class restrictions, or are more powerful then the default class.
Also what about the Alternate Classes (Paladin-AntiPaladin, Rogue-Ninja, etc)

I like it. Have only ever tried to get into a single Ironfang, so it's nice to see someone planning to recruit for it.
- Been on one form of PBH boards or another for over ten years.
- Have two active campaigns I am running. One coming up on two years.
- I like to roll dice.
- Have played 3.5, 4th edition, Pathfinder
- Kingmaker, WotR, BG3 CRPG experiance.

@RHMG Animator, I think I'll stick with the rolls for stats; I'm fairly comfortable adjusting the results for the final picks to ensure balance across the board. I had a look at the archetype rules briefly, and I think I'll just kept the lid closed there. I believe there are enough options for classes across the PHB and APG to make an interesting character. I'm open to alternate classes on a case-by-case basis; if you desperately need to use a specific alternate to give your vision life then I'm happy to discuss.
@AJM4885 point duly noted. I forgot about background skills, I'm a huge fan and will definitely include. I've had a bit of a read up on the unchained stuff, and it looks pretty streamlined. I'm coming around to the idea.
@Zahir same goes for the feat taxes, I'm likely going to include these as they just make sense.
I'm developing my recruitment post now; it'll likely go live on Friday (or Thursday for those of you in the US). Seems like a comfortable length of time is 2 weeks, so expect it to be open that long. In the meantime, feel free to check out the players guide and familiarise yourselves with the content there. I'm really looking forward to this, thanks to everyone who has reached out so far!

We are starting to covering all the Core Rule Books,
So what about alternate Racial traits and racial feats found in the ARG and other racial books?.
What about the Feats and spells from the Ultimate Books.
If the source books are going to be limited to the Core Rule Books, I'd recommend a Link to the PRD, which sorts content by book and then options and rules.
Also are you going to have a posting rate requirement, for running an AP, I have to recommend setting this so the game moves along, generally GMs try to set it for 1 post for weekdays.

Gotcha, though there are two ways to keep folks within a stat power range without my system or asking them to adjust their stats alot;
* one is setting up a PB worth range, and those outside of it have to re-roll the stats until they are in the range (Say 15 to 25 PB), might need some minor adjustments if deemed needed.
* Another is they roll the first 5 stats, and the last stat is made with the surplus or debt their previous five rolls made in relation to a point buy sum value, provided they can pay the debt(a stat of 5 being possible), if not they have to re-roll again. The debt can make for a nice weakness with a otherwise strong stat array for a character.

GM Two-Hands |

@RHMG Animator, I'll make a note in the post of the books which I think will work best with the game. I'm a simple man so I think this will likely be core plus a few key picks. I'll do my best to provide enough range for diverse and interesting characters that fit within the vibe of the AP.
We'll cross the stat bridge when we get to it; I've been DMing games IRL for almost 20 years so I've got my own approach to party balance and I'm confident I can keep things fair for all.

Ridge |

I am definitely still interested.
I do have a question that's fluff rather than crunch. The Player's Guide for Ironfang Invasion says " Ideally, at least one character is a native of the small town, and their characters should have reason to visit often enough that at least a few residents know their names. "
If we make a citizen of Phaendar, would it be okay if we also made a family member or two for the setting? Or a best friend or the like? I tend to enjoy doing that myself but I don't want to presume.

Ridge |

@Ridge, absolutely! There are a number of NPC's listed in the module who player's may engage with pretty early on, so if you'd like to link up to one of them hit me up once recruitment is live and I'll provide some detail.
Perfect!
Thanks for the quick response! I look forward to recruitment!
