Illusion and Hazards

Rules Discussion

Hello, is it possible to create hazards with illusions ? Illusory object ? Illusory scene ? Mirage ?
Can Illusions have the same effects that Hazards ?
For example, as an hidden pit causes damage or other effect as pitfall reaction from its hazards.

Thanks for your future answer.

yes.

ok, there is nothing that says you can't have a hazard that creates illusory soldiers that charge at the party, causing mental instead of piercing damage.

Can Illusion based hazards exist? Yes, of course.

Can any of those spells create a hazard that deals damage directly? No, that is not part of what any of them are capable of.

Could an illusion from one of those spells indirectly create a hazard, by doing something like putting an illusory floor over an actual pitfall? Sure, no reason they couldn't.

My game session tomorrow in Spoken on the Song Wind will have an illusion-based hazard 7 that inflicts a curse rather than damage.

Trap in Spoken on the Song Wind:

A2. SUPPLY DELIVERY ROOM
Dust and cobwebs coat empty shelves and cabinets. The hard dirt floor is stained with paint and the powder of
long-inert reagents. ...
Trap: The serpentfolk trap produces a loud hissing noise. If the heroes bypass this ward and open the door silently, the creatures in area A3 are caught off guard.

SERPENT WARD HAZARD 7
UNCOMMON MAGICAL TRAP
Stealth DC 25 (expert)
Description Illusionary snakes erupt from the trapped door, inflicting a venomous curse on intruders.
Disable DC 26 Thievery (expert) or DC 24 Occultism (expert) to deactivate the magical trigger
Curse the Intruders [reaction] (curse, illusion, occult) Trigger The trapped door is opened other than by a serpentfolk; Effect Hissing, illusionary snakes leap from the door. Each living creature within 30 feet is subjected to the curse of potent poison. If a living creature opened the door, that creature must roll its saving throw against the curse twice and take the worse result (this is a
misfortune effect).

CURSE OF POTENT POISON CURSE 5
UNCOMMON CURSE MAGICAL
This curse magically speeds poison through your body.
Saving Throw DC 20 Will; Effect You take a –1 status penalty to Fortitude saves and you gain weakness 3 to poison (if you already have weakness to poison, increase it by 3). The curse remains until removed by remove curse or similar magic.

Adding my general agreement.

- Can hazards be illusory? Yes; in fact I feel like a lot of haunts have illusory or otherwise incorporeal effects.
- Can those spells create hazards? Hammerjack says it best: not directly, but potentially
- Can illusions have the same effect as hazards? This is a pretty hard sell depending what exact hazard you're looking for. Could an illusion create a pitfall trap? Seems reasonable. Could an illusion create a spear trap? Yes, but not one that deals damage--unless perhaps your intent is to create a custom hazard that deals mental damage, but thematically that's more the realm of haunts than hazards. Still, if creating an illusion themed dungeon, illustory traps that deal mental damage are within reason. On the other hand, casting an illusory object spell and expecting it to deal mental damage because it resembles a trap is a no-go for me, with the possible exception of a very niche use of Illusory Creature.

It seems to me most of the ways to create a hazard out of illusions would involve either building an actual hazard and covering it up with illusions, or going to the trouble to build a illusory magical hazard. In either case, it would require the trapmaker to engage in actually creating a hazard, which is generally outside the realm of players except through GM fiat.

Depending what the players were planning, I may allow them to set up a minor hazard ahead of a fight. Of course, if this is a GM-side question, the hazard building rules certainly offer enough support to make this idea real.

Take a look at the ephemeral hazards focus spell.
