Speaking and Auditory Effect

I want to preface the thread by saying that this is mostly a joke.

BUT

Is Speaking an Auditory effect?

I had this funny thought while catching up on some Bard feats for a martial bard, and reread Courageous Opportunity:

Quote:
A creature within your reach uses an auditory effect, manipulate action, or move action; makes a ranged attack; or leaves a square during its move action.

And ofc the first thing that popped into my mind was the Big Bad starting his evil monologue and a Bard sucker punching him...

:D

I'd allow it.

If I were to define Combat Banter, it would be a free action with the Auditory and Linguistic traits. Similar to define a non-combat exploration activity to speak.

You don't need to make a definition. You can use the one from Player Core 1 page 419 (which is pretty much the same as the one in CRB was)

Quote:

SPEAKING

As long as you can act, you can also speak. You don’t need to spend any type of action to speak, but because a round represents 6 seconds of time, you can usually speak at most a single sentence or so per round. Special uses of speech, such as attempting a Deception skill check to Lie, require spending actions and follow their own rules. All speech has the auditory trait. If you communicate in some way other than speech, other rules might apply. For instance, using sign language is visual instead of auditory.

It's the same one that is the reason being deafened gives you a flat check to cast non-Subtle spells (or spells with verbal components, premaster).

If you wanted to argue about exact words, you'd need to argue about "effect" not about "auditory".

Cool. That makes things even better.

As a side note: I just searched for that - again... And still can't find it in AoN no matter what keywords I use. Even when specifying the search to just rules so that I don't get a pile of spells like "Speak with Plants".

As great of a resource as AoN is, it's no substitute for reading through the books, if the goal is to catch all the important sidebars. Some of them are very hard to find in there. Sometimes even the pages giving you a full chapter of rules, instead of some heading or subheading, will be missing sidebars from that chapter.

To sum it up, it seems this sidebar has fallen out of AoN and isn't there at all. It's mentioned though as (not) a link to page 419.

With the big "rush" of the remaseter, a LOT of sidebars have been lost or misplaced on AoN. Many have been reported and will be fixed on the next update. I dunno if that one was.
