Are we able to have any background together? If we get picked? I would like to work some of the background into other players if we can

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

Here's my rough draft character sheet. I decided to throw random gen into the background and appearance, though tweaked for narrative flow and sensibility. SOmehow even with randomly generated background features, I still made the backstory too long.

Crunch:

Shanava
NG Tiefling Bard 1
Str 10 Dex 12 Con 9 Int 13 Wis 8 Cha 15
(Rolled stats, tiefling +1 to Wis and +2 to Cha)
Honor: 10

==COMBAT==
Init +1; Darkvision 60 ft.
HP 7/7
AC 12
Resistance to Fire Damage

Speed 30 ft
Melee Rapier +3 1d6

==PROFICIENCIES==
Bonus +2
Saving Throws: Dexterity, Charisma
Skills: Arcana (B), History (B), Investigation (C), Persuasion (C), Religion (C)
Weapons: simple, hand crossbow, longsword, rapier, shortsword
Armor: Light armor
Tools: Drum, flute, lyre
==OTHER ADVENTURING ABILITIES==
Bardic Inspiration: As a bonus action, choose one creature (not self) within 60 feet who can hear me. That creature receives a d6 inspiration die. Once within the next 10 minutes the creature can choose to add the inspiration die to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw. They may choose to spend the inspiration after rolling the d20, but it must be before the DM announces the result.

Languages: Common, Infernal

==BACKGROUND==
Sage; Specialty: Scribe
Feature: Researcher: When you attempt to learn or recall a piece of lore, if you do not know that information, you often know where and from whom you can obtain it. Usually, this information comes from a library, scriptorium, university, or a sage or other learned person or creature. Your DM might rule that the knowledge you seek is secreted away in an almost inaccessible place, or that it simply cannot be found. Unearthing the deepest secrets of the multiverse can require an adventure or even a whole campaign.

==SPELLCASTING==
Spell save DC: 12
Attack Bonus: +4

Tiefling Spells: Thaumaturgy (cantrip)

Cantrips Known:
Message, Prestidigitation

Spells Known
[/i]Level 1 (2 spell slots, prepared *)[/i]
Comprehend Languages, *Heroism, *Identify, Thunderwave

==EQUIPMENT==
Weapons: Dagger, Rapier
Armor: Leather
Other: Diplomat’s pack (chest, 2 scroll cases, set of fine clothes, bottle of ink, ink pen, lamp, 2 flasks of oil, 5 sheets of paper, vial of perfume, sealing wax, and soap).
Lyre, Bottle of black ink, quill, small knife, letter from dead colleague posing a question I have not yet been able to answer, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp

==CHARACTERISTICS==
Trait: I use polysyllabic words that convey the impression of great erudition.

Ideal: Beauty. What is beautiful points us beyond itself toward what is true.

Bond: I've been searching my whole life for the answer to a certain question.

Flaw: I overlook obvious solutions in favor of complicated ones.

==FLUFF==

Backstory:
Shanava grew up far to the north in the Blackmoor. He remembers very little of his childhood before he was about five years old, when his parents were slaughtered by unthinking barbarians who mistook them for being true devils. A half-orc hunter named Grathak rescued him and and his brothers (Imarn, older, and Devith, younger) protected them from the same fate. Grathak took the three young tieflings home with him and raised them alongside his two daughters, Nessa and Kirell (their mother was Grathak's human wife who died when Kirell was born). In addition to being a hunter and trapper, Grathak was a tanner and leatherworker and sold everything from pelts to finely made leather hauberks and embossed pouches and belts. Most of his siblings learned some aspect of Grathak's trade, be it becoming a fine hunter as Imarn did, or a skilled craftsperson like Nessa, but Shanava never quite found his niche--always game to try something new and dabble a bit, but never stick with it long enough to master anything. He particularly loved the artistic side of his family's work, but he wasn't very good at it and couldn't seem to be patient with himself enough to improve with practice--he thought he pursuit of beauty was one of the most worthwhile things there could be, yet he struggled with expressing it.
The other thing Shanava found beautiful was words. Words and language and stories truly nourished him. He went to the taverns from his youth to hear the bards swap tales, and they showed him the basics of playing a few of their instruments. He also wrote down everything in a journal, however mundane, including recording gossip and tales he picked up on, hoping it would help him inform his own storytelling one day. The information gathered he realized, however, could be useful, or lead him to opportunity. At one point he heard rumors about the mayor's daughter and, looking into them, learned she'd been seeing a man behind her parents' back. He tried to blackmail her, threatening to reveal the secret to the mayor, hoping he could bring his family some money to help support them, but it backfired horribly as the daughter went to her mother the mayor, told all and was forgiven, and he earned the ire of the town and his own family for meddling in affairs he shouldn't. He regretted it deeply--he'd been too obsessed with proving his worth he hadn't thought how the consequences would have hurt her or others, and it took the consequences hurting him to realize it. He resolved not to do that again, but he'd earned unpleasant reputation for being a useless gossip he struggled to escape. Fortunately, a traveling scholar named Magnus took pity on him gave him an out, and hired Shanava to come with him as a scribe. Leaving home and finding his own way was best for all concerned.
Shanava traveled for a bit with Magnus, until they came to Hommlet. There he fell in love with a half-elven ranger named Alessa, and he left the traveling life in hopes of settling down with her. He got a job as a scribe with a local magistrate. However, Alessa recently, tragically, was killed by a dire wolf while she was out hunting, and he is left grieving. He holds on to a letter she had written him when they first met, which amid flirtatious banter, included the much more serious question: "Can the heart grow only if we are willing to have it broken?" Her answer at the time was that one must risk vulnerability to love. Feeling the grief of her loss, he is not so sure, and rather than explore questions of love and beauty, he wants to find something else to lose himself in. Perhaps adventure will do.

Deity: Shanava primarily worships Ioun, goddess of knowledge.

Appearance:
Shanava is still a young man, aged 21, and stands at 5'9" and weighs 175 lbs. He has an unremarkable build with a bit of a slouch. He has red skin and lightly wavy, platinum blonde hair, which he keeps short, to his shoulders. He also has a thick mustache. On the sides of his head are thick, blunt horns that curve back and down around his ears. He often paints them. His tail is very short and thicker with a ridge of spines all the way down the back.

Hey Critzible, any chance for a pregen? Nowadays I am more looking for an opportunity to just start playing, and less character/number crunching ;)
I could give you one, but what are you looking for.
Thanks! Maybe keeping it simple with a Human Paladin? Perhaps an ex-mercenary, trying to be a better person now :D

Hey Critzible, on a second thought don't waste your time on a pregen for me. Wish you guys a great game!

The plan is to come to Hommlet to attend the Wedding of Burne to Melody.

So a communal backstory would be interesting. Be it former Hommlet Residents or maybe fellow former students or classmates of Burne and Rufus.

How big is Hommlet? I'm am thinking maybe being from there, say left to pursue dreams of adventure and sailing, and had to return due to some injuries gained from those said adventures. The backstory I had rolled stuff for does fit with it, so it is not too much a stretch. And really out of all the flaws and quirks, nothing is that bad, and I like the idea of a fighter who needs her glasses.

Grand Lodge

Its not very big. It has a population of about 200 or so.

Alright, so with that in mind, being from there and coming back may be a big deal. I had rolled.to get some information, like being a sailor turned fighter. I would say that perhaps I left when younger to adventure, found love and lost it to the ship raid, and for a few years was maybe the town drunk, until my sister's still alive sent a letter to come for the wedding.

How did Hommlet treat a tiefling growing up? Where they welcoming or was I a burden to my family for being difficult/different.

Depending on what races we have, I can see having been friends as outcast or having been bullied, again depending on how we know each other. I think my character and Shanava may know each other.

Grand Lodge

Tieflings would be disliked, shunned and what not. The Temple of Elemental Evil which was defaeted long agao as well as Nulb the River pirates near by.

As for Drunk well you have to compete with Elmo the major toen drunk.

Grand Lodge

I would say I will close applications by thend of the week. Then look over characters once done Ill launch the campaign.

As for the progression I am gonna take yoi guys to the Moat House. Then Kobold Lair, then to the 1st level of the temple, Nulb and a Surprise adventure, then the Temple proper with possible side quests

Hahaha, okay, guess I am not going to be the most socially pleasant of characters - albino, lisp, drools, lost ear, and Obsessive/Compulsive.

-3 to charisma checks/skills
light sensitivity
-1 to hearing on right side

So, to the obsessive or compulsive:
d2 -> 2
d100 -> 14

Critzible I am just looking to find out the outcome of my obsessive/compulsive disorder with the rolls above.

My apologies, I am also a little confused. Could you explain how we gain or lose honor from a Background? And is the Honor score we get as our 7th ability score the same as or different from the honor gained and lost by background?

Grand Lodge

Nobles will get 2, urchin will cause you to loose honor. Things like that most do +0.

Honor can be used like hero points but you have to use 2 3rds of it. It also allows powerful individuals and beings to treat you with some respect.

Complusiom to cook/eat

So what benefits do we have to taking these things again? Like they go to what bonuses? Or are they just like roleplay things to help out? Cuz I'm totally cool with mine really, I didn't get anything too bad, and needing glasses seems cool

Grand Lodge

Minor Flaws are +1 to a stat or a free profiemcy

Major Flaws +2 to a Stat, A feat, or a Special Ability

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

I just was accepted to a game I honestly wasn't expecting to get into, so I think I will pull out of this recruitment to be sure I manage my time well. Good luck and have fun!

Grand Lodge

Thanks for the application

And Have fun! Not alot of games of late so congrats.

Grand Lodge

So who all do we have left?

I am still here, working on a halfling rogue. Should have it wrapped up in the next day or two.

I am here as well

Still here, still need to piece the sheet together.

Sorry, crazy few days at work. I am still putting together a character, but conflicted on what to submit.

Grand Lodge

Cool when done just post here and we will see how many I get, I am hoping for atleast 6. If I get 5 That would be great too. If Not then itll be back to the drawing board.

Grand Lodge

Probably make the deadline The 6th so I can make descision by friday and start Saturday.

If I dont get Enough I will veer to a different Adventure Idea I have. Itll be Pathfinder 1e with gesalt ;) Should this fall apart.

Based on this I'm down for either, I look forward to playing with y'all either way

Grand Lodge

Update this is the last day to submit

My apologies, I have been trying to work through building a "wounded friar" that fits the quirks and flaws, but I am admittedly too unfamiliar with 5th edition (was really hoping to get some more exposure out of this) and have wrapped myself up in character-creation-paralysis, and have missed the cut off. Best of luck with the game.

If you decide to launch a pathfinder 1e gestalt game, I have infinitely more knowledge of that system.

I was a bit on the same boat as wanderer82 - kind of a 5e noob looking for some exposure and a 'beginner' game, perhaps Core only or something close to it. Got lost in the early stages of the character creation process with all the dice rolling hehe

Grand Lodge

I am picking that up. I will probably scratch these rules Idea and work with the sinilar themes but more likely a Pathfinder game

Critzible wrote:

Let.me know if you do, I greatly look forward to it, I saw some awesome characters I would have enjoyed playing with

For what it's worth Critzible, I think it would be worth it to stick with 5e. For a change of pace.

Grand Lodge

So a simpler 5e Game. Minus all the extras. Hmmmm.

Do it! :D

Grand Lodge

If i fo that i may change starting locale

Well I will still have the Temple od Elemenral Evil but might alter it a bit. Hmmm. I will probably open another recruitment thread with some revised rules and ideas.

Let me be super candid: I was so excited to get to the Inn of the Welcome Wench and order a glass of the Celene Ruby I could taste it. (Truth be told, I'm having a glass of port right now). The right group, wide-eyed and ready to make their mark, ready to rebuild the Moathouse stone by stone ... what could be better?

HOMMLET

Please let me know, I'm pretty excited to see this campaign take off.

I must admit, a more traditional version of the T1-4 (Village of Hommlet / The Temple of Elemental Evil) is appealing and likely difficult enough without all of the extra hinderances.

Side note: Goodman Games did a conversion/expansion of ToEE as part of their Original Adventures Reincarnated series.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I think the pictures Evindyl shared are from that hardcover.

We can all just go nuts and play it using AD&D or a similar retroclone :O

Grand Lodge

I have the classic module.

I am still gonna run the Temple. With some side quests

Critzible wrote:

Just chiming here Critzible, I'd love to play a game centered around ToEE, but I don't know the 5E system and haven't the band width to learn a new system.

Anything you'd run using PF1 I'd be interested.

Albion, The Eye wrote:

Yeah as a project, the hardcover is a little nutty: it actually reprints EVERYTHING. Like each edition is in there. So there are probably 3 different maps of Hommlet, what I linked to is a picture of the fold out which was pretty good quality.

The appeal for me is, and yes I am about to say this, Hommlet is basically the first Sandpoint. Hommlet was a village that characters (hopefully) ended up emotionally engaged in, just like Sandpoint. For me anyway, that menu was iconic, because there were adult beverages from all over the Flaness represented in those choices.

Anyway, yeah, passing through Hommlet again would be a good thing.

Grand Lodge

So I will ahve the classic Temple with some fun side quests to break things up.

The Systems I have are.

1e DnD [though never ran it]
2e DnD [Ran]
3.5 [Ran it bur not ToEE]
Pathfinder 1e [Same as 3.5]
Hackmaater 4e [never ran but love]
DnD 5e[have ans ran]

2e would be the easiest to run followed by Hackmaster 4e.

My preference would be 5e (something Core/simple), 2e or 1e.
I admit I have been wanting to try Hackmaster for some time, but I am afraid it might be too crunchy :P

1e and 2e are pretty close to the same thing in terms of play and running the game. 2e was really just a means to get Gygax's name off of the books for TSR.

The only one of those that I haven't played is Hackmaster.

My 2 cp? I would prefer 5e followed by either 1e/2e.

Grand Lodge

So 2 5e

I have almost all the 2e books. But I am not opposed to puttinf the Monk, Barbarian, and Ninja in 2e as well as guns [as I love a Mighty fortress]

For 5e I would keep it to core races, classes [+ Artificer and Blood Hunter] and most archtypes. Basically the core
