I'm wondering which kinds of ranged strikes would be allowed given the text of the combination trait.
So you make a successful melee strike, so you don't need to switch modes to make your next ranged strike against that target. So far so good, but does that only mean "Strikes" specifically or could you say, make a ricochet shot or a risky reload?

if your last action was a successful melee Strike against a foe using a combination weapon, you can make a ranged Strike with the combination weapon against that foe without fully switching to the ranged weapon usage, firing the ranged weapon just as you hit with the melee attack. In this case, the combination weapon returns to its melee usage after the ranged weapon Strike.
It pretty clearly says 'ranged Strike'. Subordinate Actions rules wouldn't let you substitute Ricochet Shot or Risky Reload for that Strike action.

As an aside, I see how that might play out with a combination firearm, but I'm having trouble visualizing that process for a Bow Staff. You hit someone with it in staff form and then somehow immediately fire an arrow without needing to string the bow? It seems weird.

Eh, I wouldn't overthink it. The item's description says, "A wielder trained in the weapon's use can quickly spool and attach or detach the wire," and its bow reload is 0 so I guess it really is just that fast to do
