Choosing a trait that benefits only later, possible to take?

Rules Questions

Good day.

For a build, i would like to dip into sorcerer later on.
Is it possible to take Havoc of the society at character creation, yet reap its benefits only when getting that sorcerer level?

Since traits cannot be retrained.

Thanks in advance.

This thread is not in the correct forum. That's a 1E rules question.

Oh, my mistake on clicking the wrong one. ^^
Sorry.

Nope, RAW you have to already be a Sorcerer and member of the Pathfinder Society when you take this trait, which would be either at character creation or when you take the Additional Traits feat.

Source Advanced Player's Guide pg. 326

There are a few rules governing trait selection. To begin with, your GM controls how many bonus traits a PC begins with; the default assumption is two traits. When selecting traits, you may not select more than one from the same list of traits (the four basic traits each count as a separate list for this purpose). Certain types of traits may have additional requirements, as detailed in the section above.

Source Shattered Star Player's Guide pg. 5, Faction Guide pg. 63

Category Basic (Magic)
Requirement(s) Sorcerer, Pathfinder Society
Through countless hours studying vast libraries of arcane power, you have learned how to cause greater damage to your foes. Whenever you cast a spell that deals damage, you gain a +1 trait bonus to the total damage dealt. This damage is considered force damage regardless of the type of damage dealt by the spell.

Sound. Curious...

Havoc of the Society has very specific qualifications, clearly not met. But what about Magical Knack? Could he take this as a trait, select Sorcerer even though he does not have levels in sorcerer yet, and gain the casting benefit later on?

It doesn't specifically say you have to have the class at selection like Havoc of Society does.

Magical Knack

Category Basic (Magic)
You were raised, either wholly or in part, by a magical creature, either after it found you abandoned in the woods or because your parents often left you in the care of a magical minion. This constant exposure to magic has made its mysteries easy for you to understand, even when you turn your mind to other devotions and tasks. Pick a class when you gain this trait—your caster level in that class gains a +2 trait bonus as long as this bonus doesn’t raise your caster level above your current Hit Dice.

You can take this trait at character creation, even if your first level isn't in a spellcasting class. There is no requirement for the trait.

...

yes, you can take traits if you meet their requirements.

unfortunately, as pointed out, your PC does not meet the trait's requirements at creation as you've outlined it.

you have several choices;
1) join P.S. & be a Sor at First level. No biggie really as Second level will be the first level in the other class.
2) choose a different trait at First level;
 a) like Magical Knack or the two metamagic cost lowering feats. Later you can take Additional Traits Feat and pick it up and as a feat those (trait) choices ARE retrainable.
 b) Exemplar traits are an interesting choice, see this thread.
3) IF you are in PFS Org Play, PCs don't need to be defined until reaching Second level or as GM credit babies until played. That gives you time to think about it or play an iconic if you are not finalized/prepared.
