Can one hold their breath to avoid being subject to their own pyrotechnics smoke cloud?

Silver Crusade

So going back to an earlier thread. I talked about making a flamesinger/ flame dancer bard, and realized its bardic performance blazing blades would be secondary as a damage amp, as its real use could be found as an easy and reliable way to combo with the spell pyrotechnics, after which you swap to the song of the fiery gaze avoiding to not suffer from any of the effects of being on smoke as my weapon of choice will be the scorpion whip.

So can i just hold my breath so i don't take the str and dex penalty from my own smoke or am i just gonna have to bite the bullet and get a necklace of adaptation?

Blazing blade specifies it has an audible component. How are you activating or maintaining it while holding your breath? The same thing goes for using a lot of other abilities. Bards spell always have a verbal component and they cannot use silent spell on them. That makes it difficult for a bard to hold his breath during combat.

The spell also allows a fortitude save to negate. At most I would give someone a minor bonus if they are trying to hold their breath. That assumes they are not using an ability that requires using their voice. Smoke can irritate you even when you don’t breathe it in. That often causes you to cough which means you do breathe it in. That is part of what the saving throw is.

So I do need an adaptation necklace...figures. Eh well worth asking.

I agree with mysterious stranger, I wouldn't let holding your breath avoid the save altogether at best I would give you a bonus for doing so, but it would also prevent verbal components from being supplied.

as it is magical with an area of effect(AoE) holding your breath provides the GM an opportunity to apply a small circumstance bonus to your Fort save but at the cost of any Bardic Performance but it does not give you the ability to mundanely bypass making a save against a magical (poison) effect.

There are simpler ways such as antitoxin, (cracked gambouge) ioun stones, etc. The cost of immunity to poison is rather high. Necklace of Adaptation [neck] $9000 is more focused and reasonable. Air Bubble:C1 spell lacks supporting text. Delay Poison:C2 is the classic fix it later spell.
