Overall, I really like the general direction that the ancestry system takes character creation with fairly balanced mechanics and a lot of rule for future customization and add-ons. However, I feel like none of the ancestry blog posts have shown us more than loose racial types with fairly expected, almost stereotypical heritage feats that do little to fulfill the potential of what ancestry instead of race can mean as a game mechanic.
I understand that expectations on ancestries are intense and have the possibility of exploding into arguments and hard feelings about how x archetypical character build is not supported by core, but none of the ancestries shown thus far feel like more than just a race template. If the first time we get a sense of ancestry as more than just a race template is with the human, this will be more than a little disappointing because humans have always had that freedom in pathfinder and need so much less new support for it.
Now I mitigate this slight disappointment with general excitement that the space is at least present for something more like varisians, kellids, taldans, etc. with all the people of Golarion instead of just humans, but I think that people will be a lot more excited about ancestry as a system when they see its creative potential in a new light, and thus far, the ancestry blogs have really not shown us that.
Personally, I would much rather have seen two different ancestries of elves in one post than grouping two different racial types together, but I understand that it is possible that the depth to represent ancestries beyond the existing human ones might not be developed enough for demonstration. If that is the case, it seems like a mistake to rush showing us all the nonhuman ancestries instead of other game mechanics, or at least if they are not sure where to go with developing the ancestries of nonhumans at this point, it would have been really cool for the developers to ask questions like: What ancestries of Elves would you like to see developed first?
