Spectral hand and imaginary weapon.

Rules Discussion

Would spectral hand only apply to one target or both if you use the amped version?

“…Whenever you Cast a Spell with a range of touch, you can have the hand crawl to a target within range along the ground, touch it, and then crawl back to you….”

Unless “a target” is specifically singular in meaning and not just a target at a time, it seems the answer is amped can be two targets in quick succession of each other. The hand may get worn out moving that quick…

Thing from Addams Family would be impressed.

Yeah, "a target" could mean singular or it could mean any instance of a target. The latter makes for a very potent combo being able to pick 2 targets for an amped imaginary weapon within 120 feet.

From the way I read it, you can only use the hand once, but you can use the hand on a target and your own hand on another one so it's still possible to combine both spells.

I even think the use of the word "a" instead of "the" is there to indicate that multiple target spells can use the hand for only one of them.

Can you really combine them though? You're not actually touching the target. The force weapon you evoked is.

Touch is just the range, which is essentially Shorthand for indicating that the weapon is in your space.

I can't help but think your spectral hand would reach out and touch the target and...nothing would happen. Then your imaginary weapon would attack normally.

Now, if you were to interpret it as the weapon appearing in your hand, and the touch being that of the wielded weapon atriking the target (rather than a floating animated weapon outside your hands), then I could see it being described as a spectral hand wielding the imaginary weapon to reach out and touch others with said weapon.

Pretty cool visual that.

The only issue with this interpretation is Spectral Hand specifically calls out spell attack rolls. The designers expected that it may be used for attacking spells, so I am ok with the spell synergy.

SH says the hand crawls to the target then back to you, so I visualize it as hopping off the floor grabbing the weapon and using it to hit your enemies, then crawling back.

Spectral Hand should work with Imaginary Weapon

Imaginary Weapon is a range touch spell. Yes it touches the target as much as any touch spell.

Imaginary Weapon is doing a melee spell attack roll which is eactly what Spectral Hand says it does.

So neither of these objections has any rules basis.

Yes the descriptions are a bit odd as multitarget touch spells are unusual. But it should work.

Spectral Hand is one of those few cases where a spell slot stands in for a feat and does a much better job of it.

It's also a really fun visual. Your spectral hand is just wielding the weapon as it flies around at a 120 foot range.
