Cannot edit PDFs anymore???

Recently, all my Paizo PDFs (which I *did* purchase) are password locked and cannot be edited. This makes it impossible to do things like fill out a chronicle sheet or make notes prior to game time.

If I even try to PRINT these pdfs onto physical paper, it scatters the text into what looks like wingdings.

Is this new? Am I supposed to know the password for the pdf? Is there some other method of downloading editable (or at least printable) versions of these scenarios? Can we at least get a printable version of the handouts and chronicles? I'm having to screencap them and then print a *really* fuzzy version right now...

I just started trying to teach myself how to edit PDFs with a mobile app.

Good to know it was a Paizo thing that wouldn't let me edit them. I gave up after not being able to figure out how to edit them.

Hopefully this gets fixed so I can try it again.

The purchased PDFs have been watermarked and locked with a randomly-generated password for at least the last three years, but you should still be able to copy text, save images and print them with no trouble. I checked with our tech team and we haven't made any changes to the process in recent memory.

If you're having issues printing but the PDF is displaying on your computer just fine, that's probably a technical issue with your PDF reader or printer, which is unfortunately beyond my ability to help you with. If you recently changed or updated your software, that might be something to look into?

Print turning into Wingdings sounds like a print driver issue. Password protection that prevents printing would just not let you print at all.

What software do you use?

The free Adobe Acrobat app works for me for highlighting, note taking and freehand drawing. I used it recently to GM #4-01.

But I did discover some time ago that public libraries (and my local university) can't print Paizo PDFs. Sometimes there's fields of black and sometimes the text is messed up. I've been told it could either be intentional security protocols or unintentional driver errors.

Printing Chronicles and color intensive handouts at a FedEx store has always worked for me, though.

Most pdf editors I have used had some way to add text (usually called a typewriter) and that worked out fine. In, the last couple of years I have been mostly printing chronicle sheets to pdf, and with the right setup you end up with some good-looking files while also taking up only a couple 100kb on your storage media of choice.

Might I suggest trying another software?

The password protection is not new. But, what I do in Acrobat is use the SIGN tool, and then SIGN YOURSELF. This will put box where you want it and you can type in it. It works the way the typewriter tool used to work. That’s how I do my chronicle sheets.

Occasionally, I do get the Wingdings thing when I print chronicle sheets. Sometimes, closing and then reopening the document fixes it.

I have a guide on making and splitting chronicles if it helps anyone. It includes free software options using Foxit Reader and RPG Chronicles.

I think that will help everyone, since that is a perennial question for anyone not using RPG Chronicles.
