I'm jumping into an Iron Gods game at level 6 with the psychic class. I know its not the optimal choice per say, But I was told it would be pretty flavorful, and I've been meaning to try out the class anyway.

I know that, for the most part I will be ineffective vs the Robotic sort of enemies. I had the idea that I would focus primary on being a lockdown caster, with a few fun spells here and there. Then fall back to some of the support spells during fights with the robots.

I was also thinking of taking a few levels of the esoteric knight for more defenses, and to make use of some of the cool armor/weapons bound to be in the AP. (this would be making use of the prestigious caster feats)

Honestly, I was largely curious what would be a good school of spell to focus on? (spell focus and the like) both for offensive spells (such as Id Insinuation) and support spells (such as Haste) To focus on as we level up.

I meant to respond to this yesterday but got side-tracked.

I ran Iron Gods over a year ago and we fully completed the adventure path. You should be okay with some level of mental effects if you plan for it, as not all of the robots are going to be immune to mind-affecting spells. They will mostly be immune to morale effects though.

If I were building a Psychic for the adventure path, I'd likely use the Rivethun discipline and focus on transmutation spells for both offense and buffing my allies. This might actually go well with your intention to work in some Esoteric Knight levels, to build up your chassis for combat. Instead of that, I might dip a single level of cross-blooded sorcerer to get access to arcane magic devices and bloodlines to help boost my damaging spells. Robots can have Hardness in addition to damage reduction, and it is going to effect the effectiveness of your elemental spells.

I can give other tips and advice, and keep it spoiler free for you, if you want to bounce other ideas my way.

Looking through the spell list, I was considering either Illusion (shadows and the normal illusion spells) and transmutation or Necromancy, or Enchantment (Confusion, Id insinuation, Ego whip., feeblemind etc) and transmutation. I'm specifically shying away from anything that gives me too much easy control of robots (since, it wouldn't be very fun if there was a big bad robot boss that I save or sucked due to their terrible saves just because I have a thing that lets me affect them)

But other things are fine for lock down.

Feats are some combintation of-

Spell focus echantment/transmutation or Illusion/transmutation (or necromancy in place of transmutation) And the greater versions.

Technologist because AP feat tax.

PBS/EWP firearms/Precise shot/deadly aim

and a bunch of prestigious spellcaster feats if I go for the esoteric Knight.

Debating between Lore, mindtech, abomination, and Psychedelia for discipline
