Why are lampads always crying?

Pathfinder Second Edition General Discussion

Does living underground just suck that much? If so, why aren't all the creatures there miserable?

Dunno, I'd be crying too if I couldn't go more than 300ft outside of one cavern.

It's not that being underground sucks, it's that they are lonely because most of the other life that exists underground wants to kill or enslave or torture you.

Ok, but why aren't all the creatures living in The Darklands crying then (well, the ones that actually have eyes, at least)?

Most of them don't risk dying if they leave their room?

I guess so. This raises the question of why the Eldest (or whoever they follow) have them just guard random caves in the Darklands.

They ran out of tears long ago. Also, those tears they previously shed metamorphosed into salt monsters that tried to kill them, so now they keep it all bottled on the inside.

I think part of the point of Fey in mythology is that you can't understand why they do things - the caves could be important somehow, or it could just be an order that was given on a random whim that was never rescinded.

Heck, one of the Eldest might just like caves and doesn't want people to touch the rocks. Or maybe making the Lampads cry might be the entire point.

Onion-laden diet.

Hecate decided that hellhounds were her favored beast, and they've never gotten over that rejection.

I think Daemons eat the Urdhefans who cry, so they've learned how to bottle everything up as a survival mechanism.

My crying won't hurt an enemy of mine. The same cannot be said about a lampad's crying.

I assume they follow Lampad Queens (who are similarly forlorn, but are not assigned to guard things), and it's less a matter of guarding random caves and more a matter of keeping the homes they are existentially bonded to safe and welcoming to travelers with friendly intentions.
