My son accidentally created a legendary ring...
It is a ring that activates when combat initiates, summoning a monster as if using the summon monster spell.
My daughter accidentally created a character ability.
It is a supernatural ability that activates when bedtime initiates, summoning a monster as if using the summon monster spell.

The ring should require that you either store a appropriate level Summon Monster or Summon Nature's Ally spell in the ring, not unlike a Ring of Spell Storing... or at least have the spell known (or in your book).
Since I am guessing this effect goes off upon rolling initiative, I would have the ring provide an untyped bonus to the wearer's initiative equal to the level of the Summon spell stored in the ring.
If a crafter fails their check, and the ring comes out cursed... have whatever is summoned attack the wearer.

Summon Monster 1 1st at 5th level (so it stays around for a few rounds) let's say an entropic eagle with command "fight (my enemies)"...
Ouicken Metamagic(+4) as it has to appear -fast- and +1 as it's not normally legal but is a feat(Acadamae Graduate) otherwise double the cost.
It self activates based on an observable condition, say use activated *$2000 if a spell and activates once a day (/5).
As a Wondrous Item it's about [(1+5)*5]*$2000 /5 = $12000. Note that control over the "crazy bird" isn't there. A doubling strategy yields {[(1+4)*5]*$2000/5}*2 = $20000. It's variable as this item doesn't follow RAW closely.
