Need help before playtesting with my group

Guns and Gears Playtest General Discussion

My group and I intend to give the new classes a try next week. We will try them at level 3 and at some medium level yet to be decided. We intend to just do some test battles (just rolling dice and hitting things) to be able to send some feedback, and I want to ask what you think we should test.

I thought of testing a horde of low level enemies, a few on level group of enemies and a boss battle for both level 3 and higher. Are there some interesting situations worth testing out? Like specific creatures or terrain layouts.

Also I would like to know what level would be best to test between level 5 and 10 (don't want to go higher because I don't want to overwhelm them with too many things).

And finally, we haven't decided what would be best, to go one full Gunslinger party first and later another full Inventor party or to make a mixed one (they are a group of 4).

Any help you can provide will be much appreciated.

7th level is generally considered the system's sweet spot.

Casters have 4th level spells and Expert proficiency, martials have Expert weapons and weapon specialization.

Martials have +1 striking weapons, which is going to be what most tables spend the most time on.

You'll want to have mixed parties. Having the opportunity to compare the gunslinger to archers, and the inventor to other melee martials will be important.

Horde of mooks, balanced diet, and a solo boss is a good trifecta of fights to test the class in different situations.

Also think about providing cover, high ground, difficult terrain, and choke points, as well as different enemy archetypes within each fight (brutes, skirmishers, artillery, supports, etc).

We were aiming to just play the new classes. We have been playing 2nd Ed non stop since release and I think we have a good grasp on what the other classes can and can't do. I could play another PC myself for the sake of camparison though. Archer fighter for gunslinger and maybe any non-fighter martial for inventor would be the best way to compare them, right?

I will think about some interesting terrain layouts for the on level fights. Primarly cover for gunslingers, since they have some feats that directly interact with it.

Fighter with a gun, Gunslinger with gun, Gunslinger with Crossbow.

Two boss fights, one low-moderate ac high hp, another high ac regular hp.

I will tell them about picking a fighter or 2 then.

Probably will do that for the bosses, thanks.

It might be a good idea to have some released classes with normal loadouts in there at some point just for a benchmark and to see how they mesh in a normal party. Check out having a Bard inspiring courage, casting Synesthesia on a boss, how they compare to a bow using fighter/ranger, how they mesh with melee. Things like that.

I'm sure other people will do those as well though, and just testing the feel of Firearms without caster support and without comparing them directly to other martials is good to test out how they feel on their own.

Our group, we'll play a game in the Mana Waste, so 100% no magic. :O

My main group doesn't do any side stuff so it looks like my playtesting will be limited to theorycrafting builds. Do we have an LFG-playtest topic? ;-)

Thanks for the feedback! We finally decided on trying level 3 and level 10. They wanted to test level 9 class features and 10 looked like a good number.

We will be testing with +1 weapons at level 3 and +2 striking weapons + Prop. Rune and +1 Resilient armor at 10.

Also one of them will use an extra character for comparison reasons (An archer fighter with ranger archetype, a crossbow precision ranger and a bo staff control monk, rotating between fights).

Will post the results later on.
