Two-Weapon-Defense and Swordplay Style

Rules Questions

Hi,

i have got a rules question concerning the interaction of the feat "Swordplay Style":

"While using this style, wielding the chosen weapon, and fighting defensively or using either the total defense action or the Combat Expertise feat, you gain a +1 shield bonus to your Armor Class."

And the feat "Two-Weapon Defence":

"When wielding a double weapon or two weapons (not including natural weapons or unarmed strikes), you gain a +1 shield bonus to your AC. When you are fighting defensively or using the total defense action, this shield bonus increases to +2."

Does that mean:

Fighting defensively: -4 ATT / +2 AC
FD + Swordplay: -4 ATT / +3 AC
FD + TWD: -4 ATT / +4 AC
FD + Swordplay + TWD: -4 ATT / +5 AC

I don't think they interact at all, honestly. Shield Bonuses do not stack, do they? Therefore you either gain the benefits of one or the other... whichever is better... to my knowledge. Sadly, that's the way the cookie crumbles.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Shield bonuses don't stack. "The important aspect of bonus types is that two bonuses of the same type don’t generally stack. With the exception of dodge bonuses, most circumstance bonuses, and racial bonuses, only the better bonus of a given type works (...)" CRB pg. 208

If you're looking for better options for fighting defensivly:

If you have 3 or more ranks in acrobatics, when you fight defensively your AC bonus increases by +1 (+3AC instead of +2AC), and when taking the Full Defence action ot increases by +2 (+6AC instead of +4AC).

Crane style reduces the penalties for Fighting defensively and increases the AC bonus. This stacks with the Acrobatics bonus, so you end up with -2 to attack and +4AC. It does require a few more feats though, so may not be worth it.

As they've rightly said and explained how come, it doesn't stack.

This being said, in this case, it doesn't break anything fluff or crunch to homebrew that the effects of both feats can be combined.
