Divine Bond and Greater Magic Weapon

Rules Questions

Hello All!

Quick question, but it really confuses me.

Imagine we have Paladin with +2 Divine Bond feature and he wields +1 longsword.
Someone uses Greater Magic Weapon on his longsword and makes it +3 longsword for 1 hours per caster level.

Can Paladin use his Divine Bond to create +5 longsword?

Sovereign Court

Sure, but it bypasses damage reduction as if it were only a +3. This is because Greater Magic Weapon(GMW) doesn't count for DR except magic(only).

As far as Divine Bond(DB) cares, its a +3 weapon from GMW. As far as DR cares its a +1 from base (or GMW) and +2 more from DB, so +3.

Or you can use DB to add properties instead.

What really confuses me in case he actually CAN create +5 longsword is that if, we assume that order of operations was different - specifically Paladin used Divine Bond first, got his +3 longsword from Divine Bond and ONLY THEN used GMW - in this case GMW would do nothing, as it simply would give +3 bonus that doesn't stack.

Hmmmmm

Sovereign Court

In general, players get to determine the order of operations for effects that happen at the same time. That could be a houserule at my table though since I can't find 'order of operations' in the rules. Or I am just not remembering the particular wording.

If I was GMing and the Paladin used Divine Bond for enhancement bonus right before being buffed with Greater Magic Weapon (on the same weapon) to +3, I would let them swap Divine Bond's bonuses over to weapon properties. Once. Then I would expect them to remember that it doesn't stack in that particular order.

Same thing for Magus, Occultists, Warpriest, Fighter(Warrior Spirit), etc.
