Nanocyte Class

Welcome to the Starfinder Tech Revolution Playtest!!

This forum is a place to discuss the playtest version of the nanocyte class.
Feel free to ask questions and give feedback as you try out the class—we're listening!

Of course, the best place to give your feedback is via the playtest survey (found here), which includes a free-form text box to tell us anything not covered in the survey.

Finally, if you have feedback about the playtest process in general (rather than the nanocyte specifically), let us know here.

Thank you for helping us make Starfinder even better!

So, is swarm strike supposed to use CON modifier for attack and damage rolls? Seems good, maybe too good... I dunno.

Alright so... the gear array and nanite array abilities interact in such a way that this class cannot be played because you reach a fundamental error in building your character when choosing the forms for your gear.

Gear Array, emphasis mine wrote:
To select a piece of equipment as one of your gear array’s major or minor forms, its level must be equal to or lower than your nanocyte level plus 1, and its price must be equal to or lower than your nanite investment (see below).
Nanite Array, emphasis mine wrote:

The equipment you can create with your gear array is limited in part by your investment of raw material into your nanites, in the form of universal polymer bases (UPBs; Starfinder Core Rulebook 233). This is a numerical value called your nanite investment, and it starts at 0 when you gain your first nanocyte level. You can spend

an hour using your nanites to break down an unattended weapon or technological item (with a maximum level equal to or lower than your nanocyte level plus 1) into component UPBs that you can then invest in your nanites.

So because you select your character's abilities and make class-feature related decisions before buying gear in character creation, you have to select two major forms (weapons or augmentations) and three minor forms (technological items and personal items) with a cost of... 0 or fewer credits.

This class objectively cannot be played by the rules-as-written at this stage.

Good questions/notes! Let's break them into new threads for easier searching by folks as the playtest proceeds.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Just a quick note...

"Oh cool! I'll be able to create any armor upgrade with my nanites without having to upgrade any armor I own!"

*reads the gear array*

"Wait... how come I cannot create armor upgrades and shields?"

Yeah... can you guys add knacks that allow you create armor upgrades and shields? I should be able to pop a forcepack, jump jets and a riot shield... right?

In Table 1-1, the Nanocyte gets a feature at 5th level called "shroud (+1 square)", that doesn't appear to be anywhere else in the document.

Would I be correct in assuming that's actually referring to the Cloud Array getting an additional square at 3rd and 7th levels (and likely just didn't get edited out of the table)?

"Shroud (+1 square)" is an artifact of an earlier version of the class, replaced by the cloud array. Disregard the 5th-level shroud entry on Table 1-1.
