[SF] Dead Suns Re-recruitment (Book 2, Section 2)

Recruitment

Greetings, spacefarers! I’m Jimbles, and I’ll be your GM for this adventure, if you so choose. I'm looking to recruit one or two additional PCs for my table of Dead Suns, which started with six souls but has been reduced to four by the ravages of time.

For those of you unfamiliar with Dead Suns, it is the inaugural Adventure Path for Starfinder, and it takes a group of hopeful adventurers on a whirlwind tour of the Pact Worlds and beyond as they battle multiple factions for the fate of the galaxy. It’s a fairly on-the-rails adventure with minimal downtime, although I try to find some moments to explore the characters’ personal stories as they advance from everyday Joes to professional heroes.

Player Expectations
I’m looking for one or two additional players (I already have four PCs) who are interested in a classic space-opera adventure, play well with others, write well, are eager to add to a shared storytelling experience, and can generally post consistently every day or two. Starfinder system mastery or a deep history of PbP is not required - I’m more than happy to help you get caught up to speed as we continue the adventure.

Character Expectations
As the campaign currently stands, the PCs are all members of the Starfinder Society. While new characters need not be members of the Society (see Role Playing below), new characters should generally espouse the Society’s principles and agree with its goals (I feel this is an easier bar to meet than restricting characters to a set of alignments). For more information on the Society, see pg. 479 of the Core Rulebook.

For the maximum amount of fun, I recommend creating a character that is generally a good person, is willing to experience new things, and is unafraid to take risks for the benefit of others. Although I encourage character flaws, I discourage you from building characters with traits that limit interactions with others, whether it be a character that’s uninterested in social interactions or an actual space-racist (please, please do not build a space-racist, space-sexist, or any other space-ist).

Current Party Members:
As it stands, the party contains:
  • A half-elf envoy with the phrenic adept archetype and the icon theme
  • A nuar mystic with the star shaman connection and the ace pilot theme
  • A summerborn ryphorian operative with the detective specialization and the outlaw theme
  • A scyphozoan technomancer with the cyberborn theme
  • Roll Playing:
Please adhere to the following criteria when building your character. They mostly follow the standard character creation rules, but I’ve adding a few restrictions for the sake of story.

    Point Buy
All characters should be built with the standard 10-point flat buy. Rolling your stats is old-school. Welcome to the future, old man.

    Theme
Characters may choose any theme from the Core Rulebook, Pact Worlds, or the Character Operations Manual, with the exception of "Themeless". If you feel that none of the available themes work well with your character concept, let me know and we can discuss options. Themes from other Paizo sources may be allowed with GM permission and a compelling backstory.

    Race
The following races are permitted (races from other Paizo sources may be allowed with GM permission and a compelling backstory):

The Core races (android, human, kasatha, lashunta, shirren, vesk, ysoki)
The Legacy races (dwarf, elf, gnome, halfling, half-elf, half-orc)
Any races from the Alien Archives that are native to the Pact Worlds or the Veskarium
Any races from Pact Worlds (astrazoan, bantrid, borai, khizar, SRO, strix)

Alternate racial features from the Character Operations Manual are allowed.

    Class & Archetype
All of the published classes are permitted as well as any class options, spells, or feats in the Core Rulebook, Alien Archives, Pact Worlds, Armory, or the Character Operations Manual. New characters start at 3rd level, and you can expect to reach 13th level by the end of the campaign. Please indicate if you plan to multiclass or take an archetype in the future. Any archetypes from the Core Rulebook, Pact Worlds, Armory, or the Character Operations Manual are permitted, provided the archetype does not require membership in a group other than the Starfinder Society. Archetypes from other Paizo sources may be allowed with GM permission and a compelling backstory.

    Equipment
Characters start with 4,000 credits of equipment from the Core Rulebook, Alien Archive, Pact Worlds, Armory, or the Character Operations Manual. No item may have an item level greater than 5, and items from Alien Archive are limited to characters local to those items (e.g., only a character native to Castrovel would have ready access to a pair of reckless gloves).

    Role Playing (Minor Campaign Spoilers):
At this point in the campaign, the PCs have journeyed to the city of Qabarat on the planet Castrovel, looking to find information on a mysterious asteroid they encountered full of ancient alien tech. Unbeknownst to them, an unknown enemy has heard of their discovery and already divined its importance. This foe has preemptively kidnapped the party's contact and traveled across the planet, looking to find ancient knowledge within the jungle ruins of a vanished civilization - knowledge that could put countless star systems at risk of total annihilation!

New members of the party may fall into one of the following roles:

Veteran Starfinder: already a member of the prestigious adventurer's guild, you've been sent by the Lorespire to bolster the party's skill set and manpower.

Wilderness Guide: living on the fringes of the wilds, you offer the party guidance as they trek across the untamed jungles of Ukulam in a bid to save their contact and discover their new foe.

Academic: affiliated with either the university in Qabarat or the research station on the edge of the jungle, you decide that tagging along with the party is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to further your research, the risks be damned.

Law Enforcement: a defender of all the residents of Qabarat, you won't rest until the kidnapped victim is safe and their abductor is brought to justice.

Cult Hunter: you've been tracking a cell of mysterious cultists for some time now, and now by joining forces with the party you might be able to take them down for good.

If you'd like to join this table, go ahead and read through the spoilers above before posting your character. You don’t need to create an alias yet, but please leave a post including your character’s name, a brief description, and a spoiler containing an in-post character statblock. Recruitment will be open through midnight CST on February 7th (two weeks from now). If you have any questions, please let me know!

    Dotting in with great interest.

    Dark Archive

I'm interested. I had to drop from my IRL Dead Suns group after book 1 due to too many commitments, so if I am accepted, I would be like to bring in the same character. I have her built at 2/3rd level right now, so let me know what level she would be coming in at and I can give a stat block.

    Gertrude Adrianna Steele:

She is a Strix mechanic, born in the Diaspora. She worked as a miner for most of her life, traveling from job to job and asteroid to asteroid with her family - a husband and two children. Her children are now grown and starting families of their own. Her husband passed a year or so ago from radiation sickness caused by a reactor leak at a job they were on. When that job finished, she decided it was time for a change and headed to Absalom Station to look for work as part of the Starfinder Society. She was involved in their efforts to secure the drift rock, and was sent out to Castrovel to provide assistance to the current group.

She's somewhat angry with the universe/gods for taking her husband too soon, and can be a bit bloodthirsty at times. She's generally focused on the things you would expect from a mechanic - engineering/computers, etc.

    Hello there, here’s my entry:

Irhok'zath is a formian female warrior. She stood out in her hive as a top participant of the Colonies’ Overqueen Survival Race, a popular competition between formian hives that challenges physical abilities, ingenuity and determination.

Irhok'zath always ranked in the top 10, but could never quite make the top 3, or even the top 5… convinced she could do better, he got her hive’s sponsorship to train in the continent of Ukulam, where the dangerous flora and fauna would definitely push her forward. But she fell into a trap. Once confronted by the exuberance and scale of the creatures and plant life, her career as an athlete started sounding petty and unimportant - why challenge other formians in a game, if she could challenge the wilderness itself? What better opponent than life?

So she’s been living in Ukulam the past few months, exploring, fighting off monsters, reaching out to local research facilities for supplies, and just enjoying herself, always looking for the next challenge.

    Hello!

I have a Solarian which could fit, I just need to adjust the story a bit.

I wasn't sure about apping to this game, but two of the games I was just apped to picked other characters, so I figured 'fork it'.

Here is my submission. Johnny used to work for the mob on Castroval, but became a troubleshooter for the Starfinders after being let go after a change of management.

Mechanically, Johnny is a Vanguard with a one level dip into Solarion to get his "business suit". One level dip into Solarion was enough for me; I'm going straight Vanguard from here on out.

    Backstory:

Johnny was born on Castroval to an Elven mother and a Human spacer father; by the time that Johnny was born, his father was long gone. His mother, for all her pretense at Elven superiority, abandoned Johnny with the Don of the Lian'kiel Guild, one of the crime families on Castroval.

Johnny grew up early, and the Don had a soft spot for the kid; Johnny spent some time as a kid running packages, and eventually worked his way up to bodyguard for the Don, where he was until the Don died of old age. When the Don died and his son took over, he kicked out all of his father's protectors and replaced them with Vesk he had hired.

After that, Johnny held something of a grudge against the Vesk, which later turned into a competitive streak a mile wide.

Unsure where to go after being "unmade", Johnny decided to join the Starfinder Society after seeing a commercial on the infosphere.

He made his way to Absalom Station and soon completed training for a field agent.

Johnny is a master of in the art of Len'Cgil, the Elven martial art of Ki distruption; his touch can disolve the bonds between objects, and having someone who is combat trained and doesn't like carrying weapons is an asset for missions of a more sensitive nature.

For his part, Johhny rolled with the change in his life from bodyguard to field agent. He still keeps an ear out for changes on Castroval, and has on occasion recommended a trustworthy smuggler or fence to the Society. So far, everything has worked out for everyone concerned.

Johnny has never really found a group of Starfinders he feels comfortable being around; He likes structure, and most agent groups are ecclectic at best, so he tends to drift from mission to mission. This has made him something of a troubleshooter for the Society, and when a request for backup on Castroval came, Johnny just happened to be on planet visiting his family.

Cutting his visit short, he made his way to the rendevous to meet with the agents assigned to the recovery. The report said something about a kidnapping, which made the mission time sensitive.

Christon Rynx is the character I'm submitting. Crunch and background can be found in the alias.

I think playing a biohacker academic/researcher with some background in medicine and an interest in biotech might be a neat build and concept to try out. Right now I'm kind of waffling back and forth on species between an ysoki and an elf. Once I make up my mind I'll go ahead about put the build and background together.

There's already a bunch of great characters applying for just a couple spots, so I'm going to bring the deadline up a bit.

Recruitment now closes at midnight CST on January 31st.

In no particular order, I see:
(?), a biohacker played by Redac
Christon Rynx, a human solarian with the solar weapon manifestation and the guard theme, played by Jereru
Gertrude Adrianna Steele, a strix mechanic with the exocortex AI and the xenoarchaeologist theme, played by CigarPete
Johnny Lawrence a half-elf vanguard/solarian with the boundary aspect, the solar armor manifestation, and the guard theme, played by Vrog Skyreaver
Irhok'zath, a formian soldier with the blitz fighting style and the athlete theme, played by the Ragi.

It's funny we both took the guard theme Jereru, although we're likely very different guards; unless you were ALSO the bodyguard of a mob boss, in which case, maybe not.

Also as a quick clarification is the deadline 12:00 on the 31st meaning the first minute of it or meaning after the last minute of it?

Nah, not guard in the sense of bodyguard or MMO "tank", rather someone who fights for the ones who have more scholarly or diplomatic tasks. Christon is not very defensive, actually, his only Revelation being Stellar Rush. In the future, who knows.

Dotting. I’ve got an idea for a hunter legacy lashunta soldier who uses a bow. He’d be from an isolated lashunta tribe that uses limited modern technology to enhance a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Basically, a the closest you can get to a sci-fi caveman.

A CRB bow? But where do you plan to go from there, the archaic battlebow series?

A solarian with a solar flare shaped as a bow could also fit this concept, but giving it a more "mystical" tone.

    Background:

Several years after the Gap, as the Formian wars raged across Castrovel for reasons wiped from memory, a contingent of lashunta struck out for the wilds of Castrovel. They saw the Gap as history starting anew and as such, a necessity to return to the ancient ways of the hunter-gatherers. It was a chance to restart lashunta society, to build something from the blank slate left by the gap. In 5 AG, a few thousand lashunta left the relative comfort of the city-states for the hard life of the jungle. They formed nomadic clans who wandered the vast jungles, using select components of technology to create a seamless fusion of the ancient and the modern. As it’s told in their ever-expanding oral tradition, the wild lashunta were born.

It was into this strange life that Dhoshgan was born, the son of his clan’s chieftan Ganmul. He took naturally to his people’s way of life, learning to use a bow just after he could stand. His life was not just one of hard, grim survival. The wild lashunta had perfected their way of life. Dhoshgan’s first memories are of joy. Of the thrill of the hunt. Of laughing around a campfire as the clan elders told stories of the great deeds of their forebears.

Three events weigh most heavily on Dhoshgan’s life.

The first was his rite of passage, in which he had to lead a mountain eel hunt and bring back its hide as his first trophy. The air was thick with sacred smoke as they set out, the fumes of the zagruk, kopara, and qabrash sending them into the throes of a hunting trance. They hunted not just with each other, but with their ancestors by their side, ready to guide their blades and arrows. They ran through the dense jungles, across branches as wide as hovercars and through ruins long forgotten when even the elves were young, chanting ancient hunting songs as they did. The great mountains towered above them. Screeches and squawks surrounded them. Almost all the animals of the jungle knew the avoid a hunting party in this state. All except the mountain eel. It was a hard fight, and one of their number did not make it, giving her life so that several others, Dhoshgan included, might finally slay the beast. He left the village a child. He returned a hunter.

The eve of his father’s death marks the start of the second. He always knew that Ganmul would not succumb to old age. Few of the wild lashunta did. Ganmul died a glorious death, slain by an enraged marax only after the man put an arrow into the beast’s eye. As was their custom, the tribe constructed Ganmul’s pyre from the great beast’s remains, so that even in death he would be triumphant. Dhoshgan knew that in the days to come, there would be challengers for leadership of the clan. It was their way.

Dhoshgan did not expect Malgah, known as the Lady of a Thousand Arrows, among the most legendary hunters among the wild lashunta, to be such a challenger. The ritual dual was short and nearly pointless. Malgah defeated Dhoshgan with the ease that a sky fisher might pluck a bordax weasel from the canopy.

Despite his humiliating loss, Dhoshgan accepted his usurpation. Malgah would made a far better chieftess than he ever could. It was their way, who was he to question it?

The third came when Dhoshgan decided he would leave the clan for a time, set out into the wilds in search of...something. He did not know what he wanted to find, if anything. He simply knew he had to leave.

He found himself in Qabarat. He never would’ve expected to wind up in the beating heart of the city-states of Castrovel. And yet he did. His skill in the wilds came in handy, and he started offering tours of the deep jungle to thrill-seekers and hunters. Few knew more than him. Fewer still ever learned that fact. He found the bumbling of the city folk and the offworlders to be endearing. The difference between a bush of glaato berries and a yombax snapping fern could mean life or death, and yet time after time he had to save his charges from the loss of a hand or worse. He made a bit of a name for himself, and even though he is content in Qabarat, he still longs for something greater. Perhaps this new contract for guiding a group across Ukulam could offer that.

    Appearance and Personality:

Dhoshgan looks very little like most offworlders expect of a lashunta. Even the burly and gruff korasha of the cities look tame compared to him. Elaborate tattoos and scarification cover his face, arms and chest, and his long dark hair forms a perpetually unruly mane. His clan’s traditional clothing would be considered scandalous by all but the most open-minded lashunta, so he wears light tempweave clothes designed to maximize maneuverability. Despite living in the city, he keeps his bow and survival knife with him almost all of the time. He cares little for the awkward stares that a half-civilized bow-wielding lashunta such as himself receives when he walks into a coffee shop.

Dhoshgan’s primary instinct is of survival. When that goal is not certain, all of his effort goes towards it. That attitude extends to his companions, and he will move heaven and earth to make sure that those he considers under his care are safe. He opens up one they are. Dhoshgan cares deeply for freedom, in all its forms. Though he cannot fathom why a city-dweller would spend all their time in a city, he likewise knows that not many would choose his way of life. He wants all to be able to follow the path they desire. Dhoshgan puts little thought into matters of academics or scholarship. He has learned all he needed from living in the wilds, and sees little point in doing more. Though somewhat uneasy with most of the modern world, he is completely intrigued by two of its offerings. First is coffee, which, though having very little effect on him due to an odd quirk of wild lashunta physiology, he consumes in great quantities. Second is music, more specifically shobhad dustpunk. It’s a common sight among those travelling with Dhoshgan to see him quietly nodding in sync with the electric war-harps, norkasa skin drums and ultrabass throat singing.

Reduce the DC of Culture checks to recall knowledge about cults and of Diplomacy checks to gather information about cults by 5. Sense Motive is a class skill for you,

    Background:
Elil grew up in the habitable area of Verces, in such a crowded area her size was always an issue, so she did her best to minimize it she tried to make herself seem as small and unimposing as possible at all times all through her youth and up until she was 36 she lived a fairly normal metropolitan life. she realized her true potential as she was mugged and attacked on a commute to work one day, and a moment before she was about to be shot she saw reality diverge from itself and suddenly her body was shunted out of the trajectory of the round. seeing this the would-be mugger turned tail and ran.

not fully understanding what had just happened she went to the authorities to report what had happened and upon describing what she had experienced they told her they were going to contact a specialist. upon her meeting with the specialist, he found she had the ability to see into and then reach into alternate realities and pull aspects of them into ours. he then recommended she look into the Starfinder Society as they could help cultivate her skills, she did so and found that though she could agree with their morals and goals she objected to how much power whoever was the current First Seeker had, so she elected to work adjacent to them not with them directly. She took a particular interest in hunting down cults, which brought her to Qabarat.

Went with an elf. She a scholar biohacker with the medic archetype. Her background puts her out in the wilds, but that's obviously flexible depending on group needs.

I'm admittedly not nearly as familiar or comfortable with Starfinder builds and character sheets as others may be, so I apologize in advance if I've made some mistake here. It also peters off some at the end, which can be amended or added on to if you need me to do so.

    Theme Scholar (Genetics)

    Background:

Born more than a century and a half after the Gap on Castrovel, Amalara grew up comfortably in the ancient elven homeland of Sovyrian on Castrovel. Early on she showed a fascination and affinity with her homeworld's biology in all its forms, and this interest was fostered for many years by teachers and tutors. Somewhat differently from many other elves, however, Amalara was just as fascinated with the aliens and foreigners that can be found in Cordona. Though her parents were personally affected by the Gap, Amalara was not, and always considered the xenophobic and isolationist approach her people took to the rest of the universe to be self-defeating.

Frustrated with her people's self-imposed isolation, Amalara left her home continent to pursue a medical and scientific education among the Lashunta in Qabarat. She was a bright and determined student, earning a medical degree alongside a doctoral degree in genetics. The now-Doctor Vallassar, taking inspiration from the use of biotechnology in her homeland, sought to study the vast diversity of life in the universe, and use that knowledge to develop more effective biotech. Such technology, in her mind, had vast, untapped potential for medicine and healing as well as for augmentation.

Seeking new avenues for advancement and access to a wider cross-section of the diversity of the Pact Worlds, she left for Absalom Station; as luck would have it, she arrived and began practicing medicine just in time for the Swarm invasion. She spent time working in hospitals and medical bays during the conflict, seeing and treating the sorts of injuries produced by war. Dr. V., as many of her patients called her, came to have a much greater appreciation of not just the diversity of life under her care, but also the actual people and cultures they represented.

After the repulsion of the Swarm, Dr. Vallassar spent a few more years on Absalom Station before moving on to greener pastures. She spent a short time working with the Barathus on and around Bretheda, studying biotech and its development and application. She found the work fascinating, but the profit-driven corporate environment and the intense rivalries that bred grated on her, and soon enough she found herself on a shuttle headed back to Qabarat. Upon her return to Castrovel Dr. V. hoped to focus less on clinical practice more on research. She found a position at one of Qabarat's universities as a researcher soon enough. Amalara's most recent research opportunity finds her at a station on the edge of the jungle, studying the verdant wildlife of Castrovel. To her chagrin, however, Dr. V. finds herself dealing with foot fungus and other medical concerns more than she had hoped. So, while she splits her duties between medicine and research, she continues to bide her time, waiting to seize whatever opportunity may come along.

    Good luck everyone!

There are a ton of great character concepts here, but unfortunately I only have two slots to fill. I'm going to take a couple days to review the characters and discuss with the current party; hopefully I'll have selections for you soon. Thanks for applying!

    Here we go folks!

Lots of cool characters here. Good luck to everyone!

Like I've said previously, there are plenty of great candidates in this list. If I had unlimited time, I would just open up a second table so everyone could play; alas, I can only take two of you. After consulting with the rest of the party, I've decided to pick Johnny Lawrence and Irhok'zath! Feel free to join the discussion thread and introduce yourselves; I'll PM you with details on how I plan to work you into the campaign in the next week or two.

Everyone else, thank you for applying! I very much enjoyed reading through all the submissions and I hope to see you again in a future recruitment thread.
