Just checking if I've been misunderstanding alignment damage or not..

In the Cleansing Chamber of N8 it says that anyone entering the pool will take 8d6 Lawful damage each round for three round. The NPC Kirosthrek apparently 'Endured the damage' when entering it in hopes of gaining its benefits. However Kirosthrek is listed as a Neutral Evil character, not a Chaotic Evil character.

I was under the impression alignment damage only hit those who were oppositely opposed? Law vs Chaos and Good Vs Evil. Is this an error or not the case and I've been doing alignment damage incorrectly? Or did Kirosthrek gain a new outlook on life after their bath? :P

There are some spells like divine wrath that deal alignment damage to folks that aren't directly opposed. Could run it as something similar to that where anyone takes lawful damage other than lawful types, or quite probably this was just a miss and they shouldn't have taken damage.

How is the Guthallath Rockslide hazard supposed to work? I don't really get the crumbling rocks -> falling rocks attack, or where the new crumbling rocks would be on the next turn.

I ended up just running it as a simple trap that hit one of the party members closest to the rock walls, but I'd like to know how it was supposed to work.

I did this encounter on our last session, from my point of view, you initially pick a area in the 120 feet aura of erosion of the Guthallath, and then each round after the hazard falls, you pick another "central point" of that area to be the next where the rocks would fall.

For my party it was hard encounter, the erosion aura, and the ability of the Guthallath to grab pcs and throw them up and away...
I love it!!!

Quick questions on the final boss fight.

Does the Echoes ability make the party have to
kill him five times to finish the encounter?

Does the ability affect the stones as well?

And then the party restores the power to the stones
at the end? (if they win)

Reading the encounter and the area of it, it appears that there is a way for the pcs to take control of the aeon stones, and if one pc has it, there is one less stone to help the final boss.

In the end it seems the party restores the stones.

I know this is an old thread, but I haven't seen anyone comment on this. The Final Pass makes it quite clear that the only way to the Vale of Aroden is through the pass. Which is guarded by a powerful construct (the guthallath) programmed to let no one pass other than Aroden and others who share his aspects. This guardian was put in place millennia ago. Yet it is also assumed that pilgrims routinely passed through the pass to undertake the Trials of Aroden. More significantly, Sarvel led a large force through the pass. Yet the guardian remains. With no means of rebuilding itself. So how are the xulgath in the vale? How did the uncle's friend (Diobel rumor 6) get into the vale to report on the statues or complete a trial?

The guthallath is a cool creature, but its presence in the pass is very problematic from a story logic perspective.

Agreed. We’re at Eagle Garrison now, and I think I’ll have my party come upon the smashed guthallath with frozen xulgath in the rockslides. I like the encounter, but I usually need to trim combat encounters to keep interest. As you point out, this one opens plot questions when I’m trying to tie off loose ends.
