Impaling Finish

Swashbuckler Playtest

So I play testing the a level 4 Swashbuckler in a roll20 game (late to the party) so I am really tempted to take Impaling Finish because it looks but I am wondering if it is awfully impractical.

How often does the positioning to make it work come up in natural play without literally shoving enemies into place ?

Also do diagonals work ?

So say you are x and have two enemies y adjacent

y
xy

If you moved diagonal

y
0y
00x

would y y be eligible targets for this feat ?

Silver Crusade

Diagonal works, yes.

It's not something that will align itself every round, but with the increased ability to maneuver in combat offered by 2nd Edition (because fewer creatures have attacks of opportunity), you don't have "fabricate" situations to use this ability. And consider that the swashbuckler has even more movement options than most other characters with the additional speed granted by panache and the various tumble upgrades they can take (tumble behind for instance).

Pair it with a 2 handed barbarian or fighter brutish shoving people for maximum chances to use it. Teamwork makes the dream work!

Be a Gymnast Swashbuckler and Shove them into place them stab them both.

Or, as it was phrased on the MechWarrior Online forums way back when; "Teamwork is OP".

In any case I do think that Impaling Finish is the sort of feat you take when you know you have reliable ways to shove guys around into position for it (either because the party has another martial character or two besides your swashbuckler, or the spellcasters have a way to reposition enemies). It still feels like a rather teamwork-requiring feat, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
