Gaining multiple focus points

Rules Discussion

I am a bit confused about two passages in the rulebook that seem to contradict each other:

The example for gaining multiple focus points on page 302 states:

"For instance, if you were a cleric with the Domain Initiate feat, you would have a pool with 1 Focus Point. Let’s say you then took the champion multiclass archetype and the Healing Touch feat. Normally, this feat would give you a focus pool. Since you already have one, it instead increases your existing pool’s capacity by 1."

But when I look at the Healing Touch feat at page 223, there is this caveat:

"If you don’t already have one, you gain a focus pool of 1 Focus Point, which you can Refocus by praying or serving your deity. (For more on devotion spells, see page 107.)"

In my mind those two seem to contradict each other. One says you only get a focus point IF YOU DON'T ALREADY HAVE ONE, the other says you get a second point.

Which one is correct? And what about other powers that are worded in the same way?

They don't contradict each other, they are totally different situations.

First situation is about multiclass archetype focus pool. Normally as written you would start with 1 focus point in your pool, but since you already have a focus pool, it increases by 1.

The second situation simply says if you pick the healing touch, and you happen to not have a focus pool of 1, you start with a focus pool of 1.

but that isn't necessary then. "If you don't already have one" shouldn't be there if you get one no matter what. You only increase the focus pool if it explicitly states you do (for example wild shape costs a focus point but the feat doesn't increase the pool).

This is definitely a FAQ candidate.

So, am I right, that
1) a monk with ki strike and ki rush has two focus points?
2) a monk with ki strike and ki rush, druid dedication and order spell has two focus points?
3) a druid with monk dedication, ki strike and ki rush has three focus points?

it's specifically for multiclassing.

p.302,on the sidebar about multiple pools it states that:

"If you have multiple abilities that give
you a focus pool, each one adds 1 Focus Point to your pool."

the example that it gives right after that is even one of those "if you don't already have one"

This came up for me as my monk picked up both Ki Rush and Ki Strike. It looks like I should have 2 focus points, as the page 302 sidebar is not limited through multiclassing. The one example they give is multiclasses, but the first sentence says:

"It's possible, especially from archetypes, go gain focus spells and Focus Points from more than one source"

That to me says that archetypes is the main way, but not the only way to get focus spells from more than one "ability".

The main way to increase your focus pool without multiclassing is by taking advanced level class feats.

In My opinion:

The Multiclass feats are reiterating that you gain a focus point/pool if you never had one [and therefore likely don't know how they work]. The focus spells themselves that a Multiclass character gains don't say ANYTHING about gaining a pool or point. Those are listed in the main classes heading of Focus spells.

If you already have a Focus Pool then you presumably know that gaining a focus point from another class spell/archetype feat will grant you another point.

1) Yes 2 points.

2) No 3 points.
3) Yes 3 points.
