Natural Attacks At Level 1

Rules Questions

Quick question, I have a level 1 lizardfolk slayer who has 2 claw attacks, and 1 bite attack. Do I get 1 attack or 3 attacks when I make a full attack?

3 attacks.

Yup, 3 attacks.

My DM is a bit strict, can someone explain why it's 3 attacks?

Natural Attacks

Most creatures possess one or more natural attacks (attacks made without a weapon). These attacks fall into one of two categories, primary and secondary attacks. Primary attacks are made using the creature’s full base attack bonus and add the creature’s full Strength bonus on damage rolls. Secondary attacks are made using the creature’s base attack bonus –5 and add only 1/2 the creature’s Strength bonus on damage rolls. If a creature has only one natural attack, it is always made using the creature’s full base attack bonus and adds 1-1/2 times the creature’s Strength bonus on damage rolls. This increase does not apply if the creature has multiple attacks but only takes one. If a creature has only one type of attack, but has multiple attacks per round, that attack is treated as a primary attack, regardless of its type. You do not receive additional natural attacks for a high base attack bonus. Instead, you receive additional attack rolls for multiple limb and body parts capable of making the attack (as noted by the race or ability that grants the attacks).

This is from the Universal Monster Rules.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

So the way this worrks is that at level 1 with BAB +1 you're getting 3 natural attacks as a full round action.

When you reach level 6 and your BAB is +6/+1 you'll still be getting 3 natural attacks as a full round action, you won't get any iterative attacks with natural attacks.

When you reach level 20 and your BAB is +20/+15/+10/+5 you'll still only be getting 3 natural attacks, and no iterative attacks.
Even if you take Two-Weapon Fighting and Improved Two-Weapon Fighting it doesn't affect natural attacks, you still only get the 3 natural attacks.

Haste (and similar effects) does give you an extra attack, but only for 1 of your natural weapons (your choice, made each round).

You CAN combine natural attacks with weapon attacks, but when you do all of your natural attacks become secondary natural attacks (-5 to hit, half your STR bonus to damage, only half damage from Power Attack). You also can't use the same limb to make a natural attack and a weapon attack (so you can't use a sword and a claw on the same hand).

You could also theoretically get more attacks out of just natural attacks. If you somehow had Bite/Gore/Claw/Claw/Wing/Wing/Tail at level 1 you could make all 7 attacks as a full-round action (some would be primary natural attacks and some would be secondary).

Natural attacks are extremely powerful at low levels, and they're good at any level. Make sure you and the GM understand them well before playing or it can be a bit of a headache.

From the combat section of rules:

Quote:

Natural Attacks

Attacks made with natural weapons, such as claws and bites, are melee attacks that can be made against any creature within your reach (usually 5 feet). These attacks are made using your full attack bonus and deal an amount of damage that depends on their type (plus your Strength modifier, as normal). You do not receive additional natural attacks for a high base attack bonus. Instead, you receive additional attack rolls for multiple limb and body parts capable of making the attack (as noted by the race or ability that grants the attacks). If you possess only one natural attack (such as a bite—two claw attacks do not qualify), you add 1–1/2 times your Strength bonus on damage rolls made with that attack.

Some natural attacks are denoted as secondary natural attacks, such as tails and wings. Attacks with secondary natural attacks are made using your base attack bonus minus 5. These attacks deal an amount of damage depending on their type, but you only add half your Strength modifier on damage rolls.

You can make attacks with natural weapons in combination with attacks made with a melee weapon and unarmed strikes, so long as a different limb is used for each attack. For example, you cannot make a claw attack and also use that hand to make attacks with a longsword. When you make additional attacks in this way, all of your natural attacks are treated as secondary natural attacks, using your base attack bonus minus 5 and adding only 1/2 of your Strength modifier on damage rolls. Feats such as Two-Weapon Fighting and Multiattack can reduce these penalties.

Multiple Attacks

A character who can make more than one attack per round must use the full-attack action (see Full-Round Actions) in order to get more than one attack.

Thanks everyone! I got the issue resolved.
