They are Doomed.

...for a single season

I'm looking forward to this. It's about time the DP get some live action love. I wonder if they'll bring in Flex Mentallo...

Me, too. I loved the DP back in the day.

Also, no "Flex", just "Mento". ;)

But he doesn't have the secret of Muscle Mystery (TM).

Of course they will all die at the end since that is how DP arcs end.

I went in with absolutely low expectations, especially hating the promo pics of Cliff.

But damn. That first episode was... very very good, even great. The look of Robotman actually looks pretty good in the show. If you get a chance, I'd recommend giving it a watch.

And Alan Tudyk should keep doing the meta-narration, even after his arc wraps up.

I quite enjoyed it. I liked what they did with Titans, and this promises to be even better. Looking forward to the next episode.

Hoping for Danny the Street.

Why the heck is Cyborg there?
If they were trying to attract a larger audience they should have used someone who was an actual member.
Joshua Clay - Tempest

Phillip, I consider many of the characters Grant Morrison created as the low point in the series.

same here. To me, no mento = no doom patrol.

There was an interview out there where one of the writers or showrunners mentioned Mento appearing and/or joining a bit later, but now I can't seem to find it. I'd like to see Tempest popping up too.

My gut feeling is The Powers That Be at DC decided that the show had to shoehorn in Cyborg to cash in on his Justice League appearance (because his solo movie seems to be dead now). He's not a full-time cast member, so hopefully they'll introduce him here and then let him naturally gravitate over to Titans where'd he likely be a better fit.

So, he's filling Gar's role? Interesting.

Titans had an episode that guest-starred the Doom Patrol where they supposedly established Gar's ties to Caulder/The Chief, but I haven't seen any of that show so I don't know the specifics.

Basically, Gar just lived at Doom Manor after having been rescued by Chief from a plague. The experimental treatment that saved his life also gave him the ability to shapeshift into a tiger. For the rest of Titans shown so far Gar can only shift to a tiger, but in the last episode this has probably been expanded to all animals.

Ah, here's the quote:

Jeremy Carver, Doom Patrol executive producer wrote:
Well, I think you can expect to see a fella named Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man. You can expect to see Beard Hunter. We have a really wonderful arc with Danny the Street. And we're doing a rather emotional turn with some of the Doom Patrol members of yore like Celsius, Lodestone, Tempest and Mento, my God. They'll be in their era-appropriate suits. That's just a taste of what's coming in season 1.

I would rather they be there at the beginning, or a *VERY* good explanation forthcoming as to why they are not there. Leaving them out at the beginning to put in cyborg is a bit tone deaf for me, and alienates longstanding doom patrol fans.

That said, I said similar things about titans and everyone tells me how wrong I am. Maybe it's the same thing here.

Still not convinced that Cyborg should be here, but other than that the second episode was pretty damn good, quite possibly better than the first.
That cockroach was hilarious. I hope we see more of him.

One thing I like about Titans and DP is how they are perfectly happy to acknowledge that the wider DC universe exists - none of this Marvel tv show pretending that nothing else happens outside what is shown onscreen.

ANIMAL-VEGETABLE-MINERAL MAN!
I wonder if he'll be back.
Yet another good episode. The slightly surreal Fuchtopia, the dark humor, the brutal violence, the very human and subdued drama of the characters: I have very little to complain about (which is unusual for me) and I like/love pretty much everything.

Did rita eat her baby or something? She seems to freak out around them and I can't figure out why

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Rita's backstory about the baby was finally revealed in the last episode ("Flex Patrol") during her interaction with the hospital patient (Ed Asner). Yeah, it was pretty terrible, but we've seen so much growth from Rita you can't help feeling genuinely sympathetic for her. I think Rita is easily my favorite character in the show.

All of the characters are quite well acted and written. Even this version of Cyborg has grown on me. I'm still a bit puzzled by Mr. Nobody's long term plan, as several of his machinations seem to work against him by making the Patrol stronger and mentally healthier. This has been a superb show, and I can't wait to see how these last two episodes will wrap up this season and set up season 2 (it's already been renewed).

With Nobody, who knows. Maybe he is giving them training from hell/tough love.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm a Morrison-era DP fanatic, and the show does an amazing job bringing its particular flavor of weirdness. Danny, Flex, the Archons--all wholly realized. I'm particularly impressed with Dalton's complex take on the Chief and Guerro's multifaceted performance as Jane. Bowbly is killing it as Rita Farr, and it's hard to imagine anyone better than Tudyk for Nobody.

I hope the word spreads about what a batshit-crazy delight this show is.

Sovereign Court

This is easily, hands down, my favorite show right now. I anticipate each new show on a fanboy level that exceeds that of my old self back in my mid-90's university dorms waiting for Mulder and Scully every Sunday night... ... ...

Excellent. It's getting weirder and weirder... almost as weird as the comic book version now... yes....

Well, season 3 hasn’t disappointed in the weird department yet.

My favorite part of the first three episodes is….

Spoiler:
The Dead Boy Detectives and their referring to Death as “she”. I’ve liked those characters ever since Gaiman introduced them back in the pages of Sandman (far too many years ago than I care to think about).

And now I have hope we’ll see Gaiman’s Death. That would be fawesome. Especially since I heard the DBDs are getting their own series.

Didnt know it was back.

Episode 1 felt very much like it was the end of last season, and the handling of Candlemaker was ridiculously anticlimactic, almost as bad as how they handled Trigon in Titans.

Still, the characters are well done and it is good to see them managing to soldier on even when they get more shit dumped on them. I suspect we'll see Chief and Larry again at the end of the season.

My understanding is that they had been filming the finale when they had to shut down production due to COVID-19. The last season's episode was supposed to have been the penultimate episode, and so this first episode of the season they had to wrap up the last season's stuff fairly quickly and then move on to what they were building up this season. Probably if they had been able to film things as originally intended, the events with Candlemaker and everything else would have gone down a little differently.

This said, while I feel the resolution was too short based on all the build up last season, and in an ideal world where everything didn't suck there would have been a bit more danger and dialogue before we got to it, I loved Dorothy's actual solution. This is not a show where you get huge climactic battles with big bads and sky beams. This is one where character development and relationships save the day, so it's totally appropriate and why I adore this show.

You might want to be sure you watched all three episodes that dropped because it sounds like you didn't. One of those characters has already returned.

Loooooved the introduction of Madam Rouge and looking forward to seeing where this is going.

Rita's my favorite and I am interested in where things are going with her.

Jane I really struggled to like at the beginning of the show but her arc has been incredible and these last few eps have been great for her too.

Also loved the vacation episode. Such fun!

Interesting that Ep 3 and the most recent episode of Titans had a lot of parallels. Wonder if that was intentional or coincidental.

I hear you. I actually skipped Season 2 by mistake... binging it now so that I can catch up to Season 3... :P

Scarab Sages

Well, that was weird. Seems like I can write that afresh about every episode.

Still, it was an episode near and dear to my own....brainnnnnssss.

Sovereign Court

So far I still prefer Season 2 to this odd Season 3. Maybe the show suffers from the lack of Niles Caulder. I was hoping the brainnnnssss episode would bring him back, after seeing the said episode, things look a bit... grim... for poor Niles. :P

I admit the one thing that I struggle with on Doom Patrol is that I have a very low gross-out tolerance, and this was one (of several) episodes where I had to shut my eyes a lot.

But regardless I loved the story. So far, opposite to PDK, I am loving this season far more than previous ones (and I overall liked the previous ones) and I am delighted to have minimal-to-no-Niles so we can really see the character grow out from under his thumb. But I loved the way he chose his fate!

Also really fascinated by the possibility of what might be coming with Madame Rouge (it is Rouge, as in red, not Rogue as in scoundrel, correct?), and the Sisterhood... and the Brotherhood...

And man... what is going on with Larry?

DQ,

You are correct, it's Rouge (as in what's used on actors' faces and women's faces)

I streamed both season together...I actually think this show sort of maybe works better as a binge than individual eps?

All caught up now, and generally I don't like zombies (they're boring) but this is an exception. It's right up there with Space Dandy's zombie episode. Did anyone else half expect Yamada Tae to show up for a moment there? Anyway, Joivan Wade really went above and beyond as a zombie. There was just something about his zombie act that had me enthralled.

So far I think season 3 is better than 2, but neither are as good as the first. Not that that's much of a criticism of 2 or 3, because so far the show as a whole has been brilliant, and quality-wise is head and shoulders above pretty much anything else out there.

Man, Wynn Everett villains good.

Another good one, IMO. Though I'm getting tired of Cliff's bad decisions. Three seasons in it would be nice for him to have a plot that isn't just him cleaning up the mess of his own impulsiveness. Though I guess you could say that of most of the characters, he just seems,to have grown the least (he has grown, mind, just the least).

Otoh, I used to not be able to stand Jane and now I am very interested in where she's going.

Oh Rita, didn't anyone ever tell you not to operate time machines while under the influence?

Mme Rouge: "I need more gin!" = mood.

Sovereign Court

The Dead Boy Detectives were great. I did think they played Crystal Palace too close to Jane in personality. I almost thought Crystal was young Jane for a min.

Scarab Sages

Damn! That was the original members of the Brotherhood of Dada, from way back in ‘89. Pretty sure I’ve still got that issue tucked away somewhere. It took me a few minutes to place the chick playing The Fog - she was also Whitney Frost in Agent Carter.

Still not sure why the name change from Brotherhood to Sisterhood. Just seems like they changed it because they could. No real reason. That’s annoying.

All in all, a fun episode. I look forward to time travel shenanigans.

Probably so as not to confuse viewers with the Brotherhood of Evil, who are also prominent players this season. Not everyone is as good with keeping up with that kind of thing as us ubernerds.

Also since most of the members appear to be female, it makes more sense.

DQ is probably right, since I do think we'll get more Brotherhood of Evil coming down the pike. (At least I HOPE so!)

This is almost certain, given we have not yet learned why they want to kill Rita (or Madame Rouge shapeshifted as Rita).

Maybe she forgot to pay her dues... ;)

Maybe she didn't want to join their weirdo pretend art gathering when invited.
Sort of like Chief not joining the bearded dudes in the comics

Scarab Sages

Damn. And I thought the zombie episode was weird. I think Vic is my favorite character, with Larry as second.

Spoiler:
I’m curious how much more time travel we’ll see, and just what became of Malcolm, since Rita saw him when they were dead. We should at least see her travel to the episode when they got killed.

I’m hoping it’s Brain that purchased Cliff’s robot body design. I look forward to seeing a revived Brotherhood of Evil.

If they give Vic the synthetic skin, that could make him more like he’s been in the comics in recent years. Could be cool, although I’ve enjoyed his look in this series more than in the Justice League movie.

Loved this. My only complaint is again, watching Cliff spin wheels and do straight up dumb things for something now like three episodes straight is frustrating. I started fast forwarding through his scenes, he was making me too anxious to watch.

Everybody else got some great stuff going on, both the Doom Patrol members and Laura. I was proud of Larry.

Poor Rita. Finally mastering her powers. All she needed to do was literally forget herself.

Spoiler:

Good call on Brain probably buying the design, Aberzombie.

I expect Malcolm is going to have a quite tragic end.

PS: I am going to be very disappointed if during the Sisterhood plot we don't at some point have this song played as part of the soundtrack.
