My "big" Christmas gift from last year arrived yesterday. The wait was because it was a pre-order with a later release date so I was forced to be patient. It was supposed to be released in June, so I was starting to get a little nervous...lol
It's the deluxe edition hardback graphic novel telling the story of the image on the cover of the first solo album by Ronnie James Dio, "Holy Diver". The album is a vinyl picture disk with a remastered mix of the songs it contains. I've mentioned before how important Dio's music was (and still is) to me and I love this so bad.
It was worth the wait.
That looks effing SWEET!

Well, I'm doing a "trial run" with a new addition to Sweet Home Calabama today. My ex wife rescued a six week old kitten from the middle of a busy highway. She has three large dogs and she never felt comfortable leaving the kitten at home alone so she's been taking her to work and such. And although there are already more animals here than I'm comfortable with if you count my son's and his girlfriend's pets, I decided to see if she would fit in here. So far Buster has not had anything at all to give about her, my son's cat isn't fond of her and is sort of hostile, and his girlfriend's teacup Yorkies are curious about her as well as a bit afraid.
She's a tiny little grey and black marble tabby. My ex named her Poppet, so I'm gonna keep the name. It sort of suits her. Had she been a male kitten, though, her name was gonna be QeylIS, no discussion...lol

Sometime this week I read the description of a Hill Giant termed "The Suffering Man" as a creature in an encounter. He had been tortured beyond belief and driven mad with pain. His eyelids had been removed and he was nearly blind, had had three narwhal tusks sticking from his forehead, and his lower jaw bad been replaced with a rusty iron substitute. He had seven or eight equally dismal things he called "skittles", which if I recall correctly, were made up of parts of humans turned into constructs. The Suffering Man would challenge players in a game of "Skittles" and if they won he would allow them to go on about their business (I personally don't see that happening with a Hill Giant driven utterly bonkers by eternal suffering, but hey, whatever...).
Anyway, am I hallucinating this or does it exist somewhere that I can't recall?

I learned this morning that an old friend passed away yesterday because of cancer. I don't know what type it was and only sort of remember him telling me years ago a visit to the doctor had showed he had cancer but he never brought it up again.
Bill Snow, known by most of his friends as "Snowman", was a gentle giant of a person, who rarely had a bad thing to say about anyone, loved awful jokes, playing D&D with his friends, bass guitars, and KISS. He even used an expired press pass to get backstage at a show once to have them sign a Christmas card for me. I still have it packed away somewhere. He and I shared the same birth date though he was one year my senior. Some people actually mistook us for brothers when they saw us together.
I met him in Twin Towers dormitory when I saw a note on the bulletin board looking to find a group to play D&D with. I went up to his room and we talked for six hours. He did join our group for a time but eventually turned all of his attention to his classes (something most of us could have benefitted from at times, I think).
He and his wife, Mary, were joined together in matrimony on New Year's Eve, 1989. They made a mutual decision to not have any children of their own, but he had nieces and nephews that he thought the world of. The only time he ever met Connor was when we met up with him and Mary in Fort Smith for a day, and Snowman pretty much just monopolized Connor's time, making multiple trips to a bank branch in the mall there to exchange dollar bills for rolls of pennies that they then tossed into the fountain. Connor was around three years old at the time and he took to Bill right off the bat.
In the last seven or eight years, though, contact pretty much dried up between us, only sending a text back and forth each year for our birthday. Some three or four years ago he called me for the first time in a long while and we talked for nearly three hours. It turns out that Snowman, who always laughed and carried on had begun to suffer from depression and anxiety to such a degree that he felt like no one would want to speak to him anymore while he was in such a frame of mind. I knew exactly how he felt, and while it was good to hear his voice, the sound of complete defeat in it broke my heart.
Aside from the day at the mall in Fort Smith, I only got to see him and Mary one more time after college. I went out to where they lived in Loveland, Colorado in March of 2001 and spent four days with them. We had a blast going to museums and up into the mountains. We visited six or seven neighboring towns in those four days and I got to touch a dinosaur track, which is one of my favorite memories ever.
As I mentioned, I seem to recall him telling me he had shown signs of cancer once many years ago and if I remember correctly he didn't like talking about it so we avoided the subject. My heart goes out to Mary and I wish her strength and peace to carry on with his absence. The world is a dimmer place today, with one less star to illuminate it. Rest easy, Snowman. I'll eat an extra egg roll for you on our birthday and I hope you found happiness and peace again before saying goodbye.

**Sits down, grabs a handful of cheese and a newly opened bottle of whine**
Even after taking what was practically a year off from gaming during which I'd hoped would recharge my creative batteries I'm just floundering. I wonder and worry if I'm reaching the end of the greatest hobby I've ever had. My creativity is at the lowest point it's ever been, and my friends and gamers of many decades really don't contribute much to keep the games interesting anymore, themselves. But if we don't get together for games they're always asking when we'll start back.
I understand that this time of our lives (smack in the middle of middle age) our priorities have changed from what they once were. But I know people in other groups in our same age bracket whose games are full of creative, exciting scenarios and players who take active roles in shaping the narrative themselves or designing their characters. My group doesn't do that anymore. And since they're really the only people I've ever played with (with a few different people coming and going over the last three and a half decades) I would have a very difficult time joining other groups.
I'm sort of at a loss as to where to go from here. My anxiety and panic disorders that have come on and worsened over the last 15 years or so keep me from going out and doing things. Chronic pain also contributes to that. To quote The Alan Parsons Project, "Where do we go from here, now that all other children are growin' up?"

Someone remind me that I am an adult and should, therefore, not tell my geography kiddos that a mesa is "a butte, but it's thicc."
You know I'd love to say "Nah, go for it!" but...you know there's at least one parent out of that group with absolutely no sense of humor.
I'm still reminded of the time my mother told one of her students "You are either on drugs or you need to be."

If it was a high school class, I would. They're seventh-graders, so it would be a very bad idea.

Well, there's *gestures vaguely* and then there's the announcement that my manager is moving to a new company soon to take over their national service desk as lead. So I'm happy for her but the change is always concerning. She's been a rockstar manager and having to get used to a new one always has hurdles.

How is everyone's week going so far?
Work aside, the Sword Man came to Monday fencing, so I got a new sword, haha.
In Tuesday's D&D session, we were up against three hags who made pies out of small children and had around 70hp each, which is a bit OTT for first level characters. On Weds, since my partner and the kids are moving in (if we can get permission to extend the house), we went to a local school's open day, after which I went to Wednesday fencing.
Yesterday eve was mainly chores.

♫Who can take a sternum
split it right in twosquish it all about and turn your innards into goo?
The Sword Man can!
The Sword Man can
because he stabs and stabs and stabs
and makes the world taste blood.
Who can take all four limbs
strew them here and yon
then dance about your torso and sing a jolly song?
The Sword Man can!
The Sword Man can
because he hacks and hacks and hacks
and makes the world taste blood.♫

I have a “if I were a reckless billionaire” list and that’s on it now, right next to Super Mario: The Ballet (performed by the Bolshoy) and Mount Monkmore.
I shoulda been a reckless billionaire. None of those people have an ounce of imagination about how to squander their money…
This is a written in stone truth.

I don't want to get into it, but there is so much going wrong for my personally right now that I haven't really had the energy to post anything lately. I try to keep things in a good mood leaning direction, but right now it's hard. I may not be on as much as normal, or I may. I can't really predict what's about to happen from day to day now, except that nothing is likely to change.
I watched part of "The Lord of the Rings" tonight. The scenes of The Shire fill me with such great hiraeth that it almost breaks my heart. If there is a Heaven, and if I make it there, I hope it's The Shire.
I'll see everyone again soon. Good night and a pleasant tomorrow.
