Can you hold the charge on a touch spell?

General Discussion

Can't find any rules in the Spells section. If I miss with a melee touch spell is the spell lost or can I attempt it again? Also can I cast a spell, move and then touch or do I have to cast the spell next to them. Because that would seem like quite a nerf to a lot of offensive touch spells considering they provoke.

I believe you have to touch as you cast it, as touching is part of the somatic action.
"[A] SOMATIC CASTING
Requirements You have a free hand.
You gesture and move to manipulate the forces of magic, providing a somatic component for a spell. If the spell requires you to touch the target, you do that as a part of this action." Page 196.

Also, I think it specifically says that if you miss with your attack roll the spell is wasted. "On a successful attack, your spell affects the target, and on a failure the spell is lost unless otherwise noted." Page 197.

However, since only about 25% of creatures get an AoO, I would say overall there has been a buff to melee casting.

Touch attacks miss about half the time now against equal level monsters, much worse than PF1.

Yeah. At high levels touch spells used to auto-hit, which was its own problem. Now it feels like Paizo has adjusted too far in the other direction.

My 5th level cleric has never hit with Searing Light. It was a waste of a 3rd level spell slot two days in a row.

Nobody's going to want to use rays or touches anymore.

Actually, that is a good point.
