Constraints on character creation?

Return of the Runelords

Scarab Sages

So our group just decided to start Return of the Runelords at the beginning of September. Before that, we had pretty much already settled on two other campaigns (Ruins of Azlant; War for the Crown) but reconsidered after reading the Player's Guide, since each time a player felt stifled in their character creation by semi-hidden constraints (Azlant: Something like 2/3 of the game happens underwater; Crown: Non-humans need not apply).

Unfortunately, the Return of the Runelords PG is not yet available. Are there similar constraints on character creation in there, or is it pretty much a free-for-all like in the previous two installments of the trilogy?

Return of the Runelords is more similar to Rise of the Runelords and Shattered Star in this regard.

Weird. My players prefer the more specific guides that strongly advise what sort of characters work

They did not actually like how open ended the Rise of the Runelords one was

Everyone enjoys different things and plays the game different; nothing weird about that! :-)

One of the main goals of the Player's Guides IS to let the players know what kind of adventure path they're heading toward, and that means if it reveals to the group that the game isn't one that matches their interest, the Player's Guide is doing its job as surely as if it were used by a group eager to play and then used the guide to build PCs closely tied to the Adventure Path's themes.

We've got dozens of Adventure Paths out there to choose from these days so there should be at least one for everyone, I would hope! :D

Thanks for the quick reply! :)

Lanathar: I also enjoyed the constraints myself, but then I had a pretty adaptable favored character concept to begin with (Oread Unchained Monk/Reliquarian). I could have fought underwater with Snake Style and fit into the royal court with Almost Human and the Conversion inquisition (via Reliquarian). Our Avian Druid and Mermaid Bard were less lucky in that regard. ;o)

Then again, my list of character concepts I’d like to play is orders of magnitude larger than the number of characters I get to play, so I wouldn’t have minded purpose-building a character anyway.

A related question:

I'd like my Monk/Reliquarian to model her path to self-perfection on the example of ancient philosophies and thus to seek Thassilonian relics with which to teach herself. A quick look at the Pathfinder Wiki tells me Lissala and the Peacock Spirit would be the two obvious choices.

I find the mysterious flavor of the Peacock Spirit very enticing, and would love to give the Monk a backstory involving Sech Nevali. However, I also noticed there's a book in the adventure path name-dropping the Peacock spirit, so I'm wondering whether that would be a bad idea (like playing a Technic League member in Iron Gods...).

Is this a no-go?

(I suppose I could go for Xin-epoch Lissala relics from before she turned evil, otherwise...)

Worshiping the Peacock Spirit is not a good choice in this Adventure Path at all. It would be kind of like playing a Technic League member in Iron Gods, yes.

Good to know. Thanks again! :)

Does Squealy Nord make an appearance?

No, nor has he ever in an Adventure Path. His realm is Free RPG Day.

Just to say, I'm like a kid the day before Christmas waiting to find out more about the Peacock Spirit! Almost as curious as the monks of the Therassic Spire.

In our RotRL anniversary edition campaign my PCs ended up travelling all the way to Kaer Maga and giving them the Revelation Quill. To reward their dedication, some careful homebrew was added to the myth of the Peacock Spirit, although with great pains taken to keep it an enigma wrapped in a paradox inside a conundrum. But it did very much whet all of our appetites for more.

It's kind of ironic that the two biggest homebrew content extensions i've done are a detailed sandpoint guide and some of the metaphysics of the mystery of the Peacock Spirit - both about to be overwritten by canon back-to-back. But also very cool to see the new stuff, exactly what we were hoping to see. Looking forward to it!

Peafowl Rageshaper. Why have I not thought of this idea before?
