What? No armor crystals?!?!

General Discussion

So just finished the Armory book and lots of cool goodies. The only let down for me was the Solarian Crystals. I do enjoy what they had but there are no Solar Armor focused crystals. Am I the only one who is looking for this niche to be filled? Is there planes for this? Anyone have any ideas on how they would work?

Why would there be though? It doesn't really fit since Solarian armor in concept is more of an armor add-on than an item in itself. Solarian armor also already goes above the cap of other armor. Solarian weapons play by fusions, level damage, and critics effects. Solarian armor is an add-on to light armor, and gains all the benefits already from light armor including armor slots.

Whilst they did not receive crystals, the development team did give a series of armor Solarian specific revelations. This is something that weapon Solarians lack, and I, despite preferring armor Solarians, was slightly disappointed by this. The Soldier Shock and Awe only applying with Sonic and Bright weapons was also disappointing as to me, it limited building options with it.

I suppose in theory you could have Solar Armor Crystals that fully replace armor, boosting the Solar Armor to being fully sufficient on its own. . . except that there would be issues. Like "What supplies you with life support?" and "How powerful does it have to be to make up for the lack of armor upgrade slots?"

Good points and questions all around. I would think that armor crystals would add life support, additional resistances, concealment, flight...powerful ones with stipulation "cannot be used with armor". But I had not thought about armor upgrades in junction with solar armor. I was just hoping that there would be armor crystals to balance out the power, and thus people picking, solar weapons.

I keep imagining the Solarians as a cross between jedi and green lanterns. The armor could very well fit the Lantern look and feel.

I think that the Jedi comparisons and efforts do the class no good whatsoever. Some of this is simply creating false thematic expectations, in terms of a class that has no psychic powers whatsoever somehow being a psychic warrior.

More troublesome, IMO, is that Jedi analogies create the idea that the Solarian "should" be able to do things far beyond its actual level. "A Jedi can rush forth and trounce numerous foes in melee alone, why can't the Solarian?" The answer, of course, being that Jedi in Star Wars are superheroes in an otherwise merely heroic setting. They are, and are meant to be, more powerful than everyone else. This is not merely inapplicable to Starfinder, but the idea itself is utterly unacceptable. No class should be intrinsically better than any other, and Paizo put no small amount of effort into preventing just such imbalances.

Its why my part of my inchoate "Solarian revamp" involves a thorough de-Jedi-ing of the class, right down to the thematic level. A Solarian is not a mystic achieving balance with the cosmos, a Solarian is instead a channel for extremely physical, extremely visceral cosmic energies. Enlightenment matters not a wit, the only thing that matters is whether you have enough discipline and sheer physical resilience to survive being a conduit.

Come on, all their powers are Charisma based. You don't have to be tough, you have to sweet talk the cosmic forces around you to do what you want. Woo them, even.

I still think Solarians would be better served to get weapon and armor.

I think in most ways your light armor IS your solarian armor crystal. The weapons need the power crystal because they don't have the underlying weapon with associated fusions so they needed something to bridge that gap. To do that with armor would be harder and in the end whatever crystal it had would effectively just be your light armor you have anyway. I am not saying they won't ever add it but it would be hard to do it and make it valuable enough that people would want it.

Not necessarily. Armor crystals could reasonably exist, without being unreasonably powerful, in a role similar to an armor mod, rather than as an item that replaces your actual armor.

An armor crystal that gave you +4 AC would be unreasonable, but one that augmented the gravity effects of your mote to slightly warp surrounding light and give a bonus to your stealth rolls would not.

They didn't add items to support solarian armor, but they did add 3 stellar revelations that specifically buff solar armor, so...

But yeah. Since the solar armor seems less an independent item than an overlay across existing armor (as opposed to the weapon, since that was designed to be an item all its own), it seems difficult to create upgrades for it that don't seem possible as a new revelation or a base armor upgrade instead.

I am not sure. Just had an idea for an armor crystal that has not been mentioned yet. A crystal that redirects your ac bonus, like -1 to kac and +1 to eac, or -1 to eac and kac and +1 to all resistances. Another crystal could allow you once per day to phase through a solid object, or be ethereal for one round. I am not looking to make solar armor up or anything like that. Just more versital. Giving it more option, rp or combat, would make it more appealing.

No one in my game was even interested in the solarian. I was the only one who was excited for it. Any of you guys experience the same?

As our table came directly off a Pathfinder campaign, the multi ability dependence of the Solarian was a turn off at the table. After getting to know the system we realize it's not that bad. I actually played a Solarian when we had a week off from the main campaign and did Skittershot, and if anything happens to my Envoy my backup character is a Drow armor Solarian.

As it stands now, I like the Solarian. It could use like, 2 more skill points to go with their Skill Adept and Sidereal Influence, especially if they're supposed to fill the Captain role on a starship, but they get enough other cool stuff they're fun to play. The rest of my table still has problems separating the idea of a Solarian and a Kasatha though, as other than the three of our six that played Skittershot none of them have seen a Solarian in action.

There's an actual mechanical reason that solarian weapon crystals exist - to enable solarian a to upgrade/modify their weapon and have different options of critical effect/etc like everyone else. Solarians already get to upgrade/modify their armour just as much as everyone else, so there's no real need for them to have armour crystals.
