Has it been mentioned / confirmed if Pathfinder 2.0 is D20 a custom system, etc

Prerelease Discussion

hey all,

just wondering: do we know yet if pathfinder 2.0 is based on a more heavily modified D20 (ie. 3.5) system, or 5e, or something custom?

Regards

Sanjay

The Exchange

As with Pathfinder First Edition, Pathfinder 2e will be Open Game License (OGL). PF was never d20, it was always OGL, because d20 had more requirements (like not allowing publishers to explain how experience works) that forced customers to buy the core books from WotC.

The flipside is that OGL can cover pretty much anything, not just things derived from d20. Unfortunately, we're left without a label for a game that would be d20 mechanically but isn't because of legal reasons. "d20-like", maybe?

I definitely wouldn't call what I've seen so far as 3.x, but how d20-like it is is still up in the air.

Pretty sure PF2 is going to be a 5E clone.

some similarities in the magic system but most of it is sounding very different

Do you mean use 20 sided dies vs Difficulty Classes? Then yes.

Given they've made it clear 20th level characters have bonuses on skills and attacks in the 30s...no, it's not a 5E clone.

There are a few similarities, but gaining 25 points of attack bonus over 19 levels cannot reasonably considered a clone of a system where than number goes up by less than 10 over the same range.

And that's just one example of a difference from stuff they've already said.
