So I've a 3rd-level Vesk mystic who fights unarmed with about 2500 credits to spend. Being an unarmed fighter who's forsworn lethal weapons, a better weapon isn't an option till higher level stun weapons are available.
Current ability scores are Str 16, Dex 11, Con 12, Int 8, Wis 16, Cha 10. Feats are improved unarmed strike and heavy armor proficiency.
Should I upgrade my armor from basic iridishell, or should I look at personal upgrades? I'm thinking if I do take a personal upgrade, Str is likely to be the priority.
I'd wait to do a personal upgrade (on Wis or Str at least) until after the normal attribute boost at 5th. Otherwise, your 5th level ability boosts in those will only be +1. (At least, I think that's how it works. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).
Personally, I'd boost your Armor. Officer Ceremonial Plate is 2275 and will give you +3 EAC +2 KAC over your iridishell.

STEP 1: APPLY ANY ABILITY INCREASES
Every 5 levels, you get to increase and customize your character’s ability scores. Each time he reaches one of these level thresholds (5th, 10th, 15th, and 20th—see Table 2–4), choose four of his ability scores to increase. If a chosen score is 17 or higher (excluding ability increases from personal upgrades—see page 212), it increases permanently by 1. If it’s 16 or lower, it increases by 2.
So, No, it doesn't work like that :)

Is it too late to re-assess your L3 feat? It sounds like nonlethal melee damage is important to you, so my stock recommendation would be investing in an advanced melee weapon with the merciful fusion, particularly since you're even willing to forgo +2 wis in favor of +2 str.

Roleplay-wise he'd like to avoid picking up a weapon. He'd prefer to be an explorer and preacher who can fight unarmed if he has to fight at all.
There's also the issue that advanced melee proficiency and specialization is 2 feats, IUS is just one.
From the RP angle previously mentioned, I think armor makes more sense to invest in. Even if a fight doesn't break out, a higher-level armor has better and longer environment protection.
