Can i craft item when making char ?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Next campaign are lvl 11 and i am the only crafter in my team. However if i able to craft item. Can i craft item before we start campaign ?

Ask your GM.
That simple, no rules on it anywhere so it is entirely a GM Call and you could have saved a fair bit of effort by just asking him first

That's entirely at your GM's discretion.

Yeah, only your GM can really decide that.

If I was your GM, the answer would flatly be no. That's how players presume to have themselves outfitted with effectively double the value of gear, or even worse the whole party.

And, at the same time, someone who invests heavily in item creation feats deserves some manner of return for that investment, so some GMs let them, or let them spend some percentage of their starting wealth on it.

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Entirely a GM call. I allow it because the entire point is to trade a feat (or two feats and a precious skill to get a hyper-focused version of crafting for martials) for the ability to go above wealth by level. It makes little sense to me to let the players craft during their time in the adventure but not in the largely limitless time beforehand.

Feat are worthy than gold after all.

But some gm always nerf mage a lot.

Paizo provides some advice on this, which can be read here, under the "Adjusting Character Wealth by Level" section.

To summarise, the quotable sentence is "As a guideline, allowing a crafting PC to exceed the Character Wealth by Level guidelines by about 25% is fair, or even up to 50% if the PC has multiple crafting feats".

I think presenting your GM with the ideas of letting you craft things for 1/2 price, or of increasing your budget by 25% (assuming 1 feat), and asking what they think, would be the way to go. Depending on your crafting feat/s you could also bring up crafting for other members of the party, if you think it would come over more "being a team player" than "cheesing the wealth balance". Depends on your GM's perspective.

If someone wants to utilize crafting, a good option to use is level based snapshots. We all know that a character created at level 11 will (generally) have better equipment (and feats) than a character who got there by leveling. So you can either say "ok, for each item creation feat you take, you can exceed WBL by say 5% or you can go through milestones and show what you would have bought at each stage"

This prevents convoluted builds and equipment setups that wouldn't be practical for someone to actually have used.
