Upgrading augmentations

So, if I understand this correctly you cannot upgrade an Augmentation by paying the difference between the two models. If I have Dermal Plating MK2 and want to change to Mk3, I can’t spend 11,025 credits (the difference in the prices), I have to spend the full 17,975 for Mk3 and the Mk2 gets taken out (not reusable) in the process. Ditto for upgrading a Wyrmling Dragon Gland to a Standard Dragon Gland.

The only exception is a Personal Upgrade, which specifically says you can boost it by paying the difference.

Have I got that right?

Unfortunately, yes. You can no more upgrade augmentations than you can upgrade your laser rifle.

Well think about it in terms of upgrading your graphics card. You can't have a geforce gtx 770 and just upgrade the difference. You have to buy a whole new one.

Oh I'm not going to try to apply logic to it. Personal Upgrades can be boosted but not others. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some rule buried in several paragraphs of text.

I tend to figure that Personal Upgrades can be boosted because a Level 3 is not fully distinct from a Level 1, etc. Rather, each type of Personal Upgrade is a suite of relevant enhancements. When you boost from Level 1 to 2, you aren't replacing the old muscle fibers or psychic crystal matrices, your adding new ones. Or more precisely, a Level 3 Upgrade is the full suite, composed of a variety of enhancements. Level 2 and Level 1 are produced by, essentially, paring out and dropping off some or all of the most complex and expensive components. Thus, lower price, but lower benefit.

For crafting purposes: You can scavenge similar parts from your MKII for your MKIII. So, 10% of the value of your MKII is 1102 credits worth of UPBs that can count against the value of the MKIII.

You would only have to pay 16873 instead of 17975 credits worth of UPBS since you can scavenge. In practive it is the same as selling your stuff for 10 % of its value, but since you do not always have a shop available to you, but maybe a workshop you could craft it.

See page 235 in the CRB.

The rules specifically allow for upgrades. Its right there in the personal upgrade text.

You can boost an existing personal upgrade by paying the difference in price between the current model and the next higher model. For example, if you have a mk 1 synaptic accelerator granting you +2 points of Strength, you could increase that to a mk 2 synaptic accelerator granting you a total +4 points of Strength by paying 5,100 credits (the difference in price between the mk 1 and mk 2 models). Be sure to keep track of what upgrades you have applied to which ability scores.

Edit: Never mind. Misread the opening post.
